- The Jet JPT 310 HH planer thicknesser is a once in a lifetime purchase for woodworkers like me. I am very lucky that my "big" birthday present was supported by those that I love. The machine is brilliant and Axminster did a fine job getting it into the workshop.

Happy Birthday and thank you for sharing your new toy - enjoy...
Many thanks. Peter
Happy Birthday Peter, I hope you very much enjoy your new machine, and thank you for the video.
Hi Andrew, Many thanks. Peter
Wow! So pleased you have this new "baby". It looks perfect. You deserve it our "Mr Peter Parfitt". Yes you do for what all you have done for us. Thank you kind sir. And may it bring you joy all the days you live.
Hi Pat, I so appreciate the kind remarks that you send to me and always know, as each video goes up, that you will be there in the first few minutes to encourage me to do more. Many thanks my dear friend. Peter
Happy birthday and congratulations for your new machine.
Hi Christopher, Thank you so much. Peter
Thank you for a great review Peter. I've been eyeing that machine myself so very happy to see your initial thoughts on it.
Hi Klaus, Many thanks. eter
Congratulations on your new machine and Happy Birthday!
Hi Steve, Many thanks. Peter
Happy Birthday and oh what a treat. Gonna be a lot of enjoyment out of that.
Hi Gary, The jobs are lining up already ! Cheers. Peter
what a joy to see you happy with tour new planer
Hi Paul, I am over the moon. Cheers. Peter
Congratulations Peter that’s a beautiful machine keep posting more video’s
Hi Adnan, Many thanks and I will. Cheers. Peter
Happy birthday Peter, one that you will remember, I guess, very well. Enjoy the JPT-310HH. I loved watching you unveiling your present.
Hi Robert, Thank you so much. Peter
I had an Axminster planer thicknesser that needed moving onto a mobile base. I watched the part with you moving a heavier Jet Machine onto the mobile base a few times. I took your advise to get some help and using blocks and leverage. Nice and slow and not taking any risks. Now my machine is safe and sound. Many thanks.
Hi Roger, Well done and enjoy your woodwork. Cheers. Peter
What a lovely machine. Hope it brings you fun and joy. 😊
Hi Jason, It is a joy to use. Cheers. Peter
I love watching Your videos, its like I'm standing in Your workshop. I could listen to You all day. Thanks Peter.
Hi Paul, Thank you so much - you have made my day. Cheers. Peter
@@NewBritWorkshop You are a legend Peter👍
Nice one Peter - and Happy Birthday! I'm sure that your new JPT 310 will be very happy in its new home!
Hi Darrel, If the machine is happy then I am ecstatic ! Cheers. Peter
Happy Birthday Peter, from Colorado USA. that is a great machine and I know you will have many many happy years with it, ENJOY.
Hi John, It really is superb. Many thanks. Peter
Congratulations, Peter. New toys (sorry, tools) always make us smile, don't they? You should be in for many years of happy planning & jointing. I have a similar helical cutter head and I haven't done the first cutter "face rotation" even after two years of woodworking and thousands of feet of hardwood passing over them. Carbide is king.
Hi Michael, Thank you for the kind comments. Yes, the solid carbide will be very durable and I suspect that I will not be buying any new cutters for a very long time. Cheers. Peter
Happy Birthday from a Brit living in Rockingham Western Australia. I have had the same machine for 18 months or so and works great as I use a lot of 2nd hand timber Only just changed the blades around as I use a lot of Jarrah. (a very hard local timber).
Hi Terry, that is good to hear. Cheers. Peter
Many happy returns, Peter! Looks a nice machine. So nice in fact that you've persuaded me - esp as it's on sale! Really looking forward to trying it out. Thanks again!
Hi Alasdair, The Axminster price is amazing and the machine is brilliant - what else can I say? Peter
@@NewBritWorkshop Yup. I'd been prevaricating for a long time and was set on the Axminster model but a luthier chum pointed me towards the Hammer but I really couldn't stretch that far. Managed - not quite sure how... - to convince myself that the Jet represented a compromise. Ha!! As you've mentioned - it's likely to be a one-off purchase. Many, many thanks again for everything Best aye!
Hi Peter special birthday! Many happy returns. Congratulations what a super present, enjoy
Steve
Hi Steve, Many thanks. It is just past 7 am and I am about to go and look at the new machine - I keep pinching myself - yes, it is still there and it was not a dream. Cheers. Peter
What a great tool to celebrate your birthday. HBD!
Cheers. Peter
Impressive use of leverage and brain power to position this equipment on your mobile base. I enjoy your videos!
Hi Jay,
Many thanks but it is not for the faint hearted. Cheers. Peter
I have the same machine Peter and love it.
Happy birthday Peter. You had a beatifull gift for this new year. Thanks a lot for this unboxing. Be carefull with your new toy.
Hi Philippe, Many thanks. Peter
Fantastic video Peter. Always scary turning on new machinery for the first time. The Jet looks superb. I am very jealous!
Hi Chris, It is super and I am aware of how lucky I am. Cheers. Peter
Congratulation for the new machine.
Hi Marwan, Thank you so much. Peter
Don't do what I do, do what I say! :D
Congratulation for your new thickness planer.
Hi Marcus, I was a hostage to fortune as someone quizzed me about getting the machine onto the castor carriage and I said that I would show it. Cheers. Peter
I have absolutely no need for this machine but I just want it. Very satisfying hum it gives off. Love it.
Hi Rodger, I felt the same but then realised that I really DID need it and am so glad ! Cheers. Peter
Congrats Peter, she's a beauty.
Hi Darrell, The machine is fantastic. Cheers. Peter
I’ve owned mine since 2011. I wish I’d purchased it years earlier It’s amazing. I have run over a 1000 BD ft of rough-sawn 1” white oak and about the same amount of western cedar though it and it seems as sharp as it was day-1.
Mine didn’t come equipped with the digital readout so I added a Wixey digital plane indicator system. The Jet supplied readout seems very simple and elegant!
Hi Steven, Yes, my Jet digital readout thing is an Axminster idea and so may not be universally available. I don't think Ax stock any of this kit any more. Cheers. Peter
Thanks for the reply Peter, especially on an old topic! I should have added how much I enjoy your videos. Nicely done.
Peter, I've assembled a lot of helical cutterhead planers and thicknessers. I've upgraded more machines from straight knife to helical cutterheads. I have learned to check the tightness of every screw in the head before I run the machine . I always find a few screws that need to be tightened more. After the machine has been run for a week I check the screws again and I always find a few that have loosened up a little. After the machine has been run for a month I check one last time and I always find a couple more that have loosened up a bit. After a machine has done heavy service or a year has passed I check the tightness yet again just for my peace of mind and I rarely find any screws have loosened.
Hi George, Thank you - I will do the same checks here starting this morning. Cheers. Peter
Great looking planer, I admit to being quite envious. I would love to upgrade to a helical head machine definitely the way forward. Enjoy it.
Ollie
Hi Ollie, It has only been in the last 5 years that I could afford better tools. So, be patient and they will come. Cheers. Peter
One it replaced but this one is a joy to use especially the digital thickness accessory so simple always enjoy your videos keep up the good work.
Ps the team at Axminster are great they always deduct the Vat on sales to Jersey which with this purchase was really helpful to offset the considerable shipping charge.
Hi Philip, Excellent and many thanks. Peter
Having watched it all now firstly I want to say how much I enjoy your 'real world' approach and presentation style. Secondly I want to comment on the similarity between your Axminster machine and my Record PT300. The only obvious differences are the cutter head and the fence control and adjustment arrangement. Otherwise it is pretty much the same. The 'new' Axminster is clearly the same basic design. The fence control arrangement is a clear improvement and also reduces the total footprint on the workshop floor. The helical head is a huge improvement on the old multi blade arrangement on mine. It is good to see there is otherwise little change in nearly ten years. Mine still, works just fine and I am in the process of changing the blades at the moment. I will regrind the old ones on my Tormek. One other change I feel obliged to highlight - the price. Mine cost around £900 in 2010 and I suspect yours is somewhere north of £2,500! As it is essentially the same that equates to about £1000 for the improved head (allowing for inflation). That seems a bit steep to me. Keep up the good work, always appreciated.
New machines in the shop is great and a helical TP is as good as it gets 😉
Hi Phenrica, I agree. Cheers. Peter
Happy birthday Peter. When I saw that you got the 310 Helical, I just remembered that I sent you an email a few years ago, when you just got your 260, asking if you would have gone for the 310 if you wouldn't have to consider price. Your answer was something like: If you can afford, run out and buy. Now you have the 310 and I am still hand-planing. :-) My job came between me and my hobby, but one day…
I am now expecting some larger project on your channel and looking forward to it.
Hi Stig, I have been very lucky and appreciate the opportunities that I have been given. I still do hand planning as well ! Cheers. Peter
Stig Falck
Good luck Stig.
Hi peter.
Congratulagions.
Im just trying to save some to buy this planer.
I remember that u did a video in the past about one like this one.
Congratulations again.
Eugenio
Mozambique
Hi Eugenio, No matter how long it takes, keep saving as this is the most amazing machine. Cheers. Peter
Happy Birthday and congratulations on the New tool Peter!
When I got my jointer several years ago ( a Powermatic with Helical head and 8 foot bed) I rented a Toro Dingo with a fork lift attachment and lifting straps. The nice thing about my jointer is there are four lifting handles that slide out at the 4 top corners of the base and made it easy to lift off by hand or with the fork lift. I put it right on my mobile base. I did the same with my Powermatic tablesaw but made a cradle for it and slide that out after setting it down. Luckily my tablesaw has built in caster that you can raise and lower.
Enjoy your new planer/thicknesser! I remember how much I enjoy getting a new tool and still do even if it is a router or whatever.
Again Happy Birthday and enjoy!
Cheers
Ron
Hi Ron, Thank you so much. Obviously I knew this new tool was coming and did choose what I wanted. Even so, the excitement over the last few weeks has been almost unbearable. Now that the machine is here I am so pleased and grateful. Many thanks for all your kind remarks. Peter
New Brit Workshop
My pleasure Peter. It was fun. And watching your excitement reminds me that I get the same way. And did so at Christmas when my brother shipped me a Festool VAC SYS with two pods.....
I have some interior door to make to replace some 20 year old cheap builder grade doors and my brother asked me to make two exterior doors with side lights for him. So since I agreed to do that he decided to surprise me with the VAC SYS. I was like a kid in a candy factory! Not as elegant as your jointer/planer, but I was still impressed and appreciated his thoughtfulness. I had mentioned wanting one to do my doors about 7-8 months ago but couldn’t justify spending that much on it and he remembered and got one for me.
I guess once my new baby grand daughter arrives and I get a bit of time to visit I better get off my duff and get started on them.
All the best Peter. Enjoy it and looking forward to seeing it used in a project.
Cheers,
Ron
Hi Ron, I think the Vac Sys is brilliant and you are very lucky to have one. Many thanks. Peter
Got mine on Black Friday, 15%off. Oh yeah! Couldn't be happier. Just be prepared for LOTS of chips.
So why did you not get help Peter!!, we don’t want to lose our favourite woodworker here !! 😂👍
Hi Dave, There was nobody fit enough available at the time ! Cheers. Peter
Nice one Peter, you certainly looked like the cat that got the cream at the start of the video. well done. Nice review. Best wishes, Mark.
Hi Mark, I do appreciate that I have been a very lucky person and agree that it does show at the start of the video. Cheers. Peter
It seems like a wonderful machine for a reasonably good price! I will only be able to afford the new Trade series 150mm surface planer with helical cutter. I'm telling myself I actually don't need more width, the way you did with straight cutters when blades got nicked.
But of course having the wide thicknesser as well as double the power is tempting :)
For me it is a once in a lifetime luxury and I must say it is a great bit of kit. Cheers. Peter
Peter, Congratulations on your new piece of equipment- i see some serious woodworking ahead. Belated birthday wishes - I think we have birthdays in close proximity (my big birthday was the 6th). Best wishes
Hi John, Happy birthday to you too. Cheers. Peter
Just a beautiful machine Peter. Happy Birthday and wish you many years of enjoyment with your new planer!
Hi Gary, Many thanks. Peter
Hi Peter
Mine arrived last Saturday morning didn’t need to open the instructions thanks to your extremely helpful video it’s absolutely superb and a great addition to my workshop there was nothing wrong with t the
Hi Peter, How are you, my friend, congratulations on the machine, and great video as always, big hug, learning a lot with the lord, i Just have to thank. hug!🌴☕
Hi Marcos, Many thanks and take care. Cheers. Peter
@@NewBritWorkshop thank you and health for you Peter!
Looks like a nice addition Peter and you are very lucky to get that for a Birthday present. I was worried by the machine falling off the blocks, but reassured myself that you must have survived or the video wouldn't have been posted! Out of interest, what did you do with the old machine?
Hi Terry, The old machine has a new home. I was approached by a friend and made the deal a while ago. Yes, I thought that this might become one of those horror movies but luckily it all worked out okay. Cheers. Peter
That would make a lovely upgrade from my 1940s Wilson beast. I think dust collection was yet to be invented when it was made !
Happy birthday and congratulations.
Thank you so much. Peter
Hi, what wilson do you have ? I also have wilson bros jointer, 12 inch 2 knife head, cast iron beast. I prefer it over new machines, much higher quality and rigidity in those old machines
@@regodawoodstudio hi there
I'm not sure the model to be honest. It has a two cutter head, 12" wide. Will thickness 12" wide by 9" deep. It's a lovely machine, the only thing I'd improve would be dust extraction but let's face it, you don't buy a machine like that if dust extraction is your main priory. I've never seen another Wilson one, would be interested to see yours.
I will upload video of my machine in few days and I will notify you here when it online. Old cast iron should be seen more here on youtube 😄
@@regodawoodstudio couldn't agree more. Just completely refurbished an old wadkin AGS 10. Those two machines are my only cast iron ones and by far my favourites.
Great video. Used engine hoist to reduce possible distortion of beds. But like you couldn't wait to get started. Enjoy
Hi Barry, I was initially going to thank everyone and make the video for them but then realised that the wider audience would benefit from seeing the whole story. Cheers. Peter
@@NewBritWorkshop Still love all you videos. Full of little hints. Most of all enthusiast and passionate about wood. We need to keep the crafts alive.
The only problem with getting help to move the machine is now you have to hang around and be cordial , possibly feed them lunch!!
Now it'll take forever to get back to playing with your new machine and nobody wants that 😉
I keep telling my wife I'm only Thinking of You by buying this machine it's so much quieter I'm thoughtful that way🤭
Hi Billy, I know exactly what you mean. Cheers. Peter
No instruction on setting the outfeed table height on the jointer? Most common issue I find whenever I use most jointers set up by others, and most common cause of chattering and uneven finish.
Glad to see your buying ‘Jet’ and not Axminsters own brand...I have a ‘Jet’ lathe, and knocks spots off others...
Hi Stuart, This is an amazing machine. Cheers. Peter
Hi Peter, another very informative video. I know you weren't really lifting the machine with the planer tables, but it might have been worth mentioning that actually lifting a planer/thicknesser using the tables is not recommended.
Hi Steve, Yes, you are right and viewers do need to take note of that. Cheers. Peter
Your welcome Peter😉😉
May I ask how you are getting on with the jet planner? I have had enough of my startrite sd300 and looking to up grade considering a hammer a31 or a SCM mini max,. I oreviouy had a jet260 ( older version I brought second hand) that I never really got on with as the indeed and out feed tables were co-planner. would greatly appreciate any review you have on the jet after a little time spent with it. Many thanks
I have spent the last 2 days using the Jet all day. It is fantastic and the price has come down since getting mine. I like the easy change from planing to thicknessing and also the very quiet running. The finish is super and I also like the extra width compared to my old 260. Peter
How precise this machine are? Mine regulary loose tables coplaner adjustment. How are with tables straightness (i mean surface milling quality).
Hi Aivars, Mine were perfect out of the box and have stayed that way. Once adjusted they should not move unless the machine is hit or dropped. Peter
Happy Birthday Peter. I bought the 310 version of your old machine on your recommendation. Have been very happy with it.
However I now have a dilemma. Do I sell my machine and buy a new one or look into changing the cutter head ??
I did receive your plans for the carriage but lost them before making one .
Hi Paul, If it were me I would sell the old one and buy the Helical as the care and skill needed to do a switch would be tricky - certainly for me. I watched a video about it a while ago and the chap in the film had parts everywhere. Cheers. Peter
Hi PETER - any idea why this model has been discontinued and if there is an equivalent replacement that is recommended?
Thanks
Hi James, What a pity. Axminster have several helical planer/thicknessers in their trade range. My brother has just bought one. Peter
hello peter i was watching your video on leigh dovetail jig and i have one mine is 1258r 24 and i would like to know how u built the box you put it in can you give me some idea thanks or plans for it
Hi William, Just send me your email address and I will forward the plans to you. Peter
Hi Peter. Loved this video and it inspired me to take deliver if the same machine.
I love the look of the base you build for it. Would you have plans you’d be prepared to share/sell?
Thanks in advance.
Sorry I’ve just seen the link in another comment! You’re a star! Ignore me!
You don’t look a day over 50 happy birthday Peter very nice machine
Hi Norman, You are VERY kind. Cheers. Peter
Hi Peter, can you give an indication as to why you opted for the Jet 310 rather than the Axminster AT310?
Hi John, It is the changeover from planing to thicknessing that I find so much easier - Arthritis !! Peter
What do you think of the grooves on the tables? Any issue with cleaning off the oil or getting surface rust in the grooves?
Hi Richard, The finish is the same as my old JPT 260 which never seemed to suffer despite my old workshop being slightly damp in winter time. The grooved finish is excellent. Peter
New Brit Workshop thanks for the response.
I thought it was a very ingenious way to move the machine. Too late now but having seen your clamps, I wonder if you had used them to draw it across to the stand?
Hi Gordon, I did think of that but with 600 mm of movement and only 25 mm range of the clamps it would have taken a very long time. Cheers. Peter
Best thing I ever did was invest £120 in a 2 ton folding engine crane. I can pick up any machine and even lift it on to a bench, wheel it around or even load it on and off a trailer or truck
I have the larger dusty and it also leaves the odd bit of dust behind when using this machine. Go figure.
Hello Peter, some reported about the rough surface of the tables and that the fence can’t be set up repeatable to 90 degrees. Is this a problem and are you still satisfied with the Jet after more that 1,5 year of usage?
I have no issues with mine whatsoever. I do not move my fence routinely having set it to 90 degrees some time ago but doing that was easy enough and so I cannot imagine how it could be difficult. I think that after I received this machine Jet may have changed its business model as their kit is not so widely stocked as before. I hope that this change does not coincide with any lowering of product quality. But my bottom line is that my machine is perfect. Peter
Happy Birthday. Lucky you, I want the Axminster large oscillating belt sander but they don't seem to want to ship it too me. They promised to call me but so far nothing.
Where are you and who were you dealing with? Peter
@@NewBritWorkshop I didn't get a name of the lady who took my call. I do understand that being in Inverness does cause difficulties but when they offer free delivery to Perth but want to charge me the full pallet shipping cost without discounting their costs they normally stand themselves I feel somewhat aggrieved. It's a shame because like you I have used Axminister for 30 years or so and have previously had heavy items delivered without question. I really like the look of the Axminster machine and it is so much cheaper than the Jet equivalent. The fact is I can get an alternative shipped in from Germany with cheaper shipping costs that Axminsters pallet shifters want to charge.
I will see what I can find out. In the meantime can you place a comment with your email address here. It should be picked up by the CZcams spam filter. I will then send you an email and delete your comment to be on the safe side. Cheers. Peter
Despite your admonition against following your example, I think you've shown exactly how an experienced hand working alone would safely accomplish this task. Well done! Incidentally, your new machine looks like an excellent evolution of the sort of combination machine Felder was making 40 years ago.
Hi Mark, Thank you. Peter
Dear Peter, my same machine is coming shortly in mid October ... would you kindly provide is with a link to the digital measuring device. I just can’t seem to find it. All the best and thank you for the many great videos.
Hi Marius, I know that Axminster have cleared the Jet stock from their main web site but they appear to have at least one on their ebay pages. Here is the link to the one that I found:
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jet-Digital-Thickness-Display-/351783014760
Peter
I have just spoken to a retailer who tells me that Jet in the UK are now dealing with Baileigh Industrial - www.baileighindustrial.co.uk/
Good luck.
Peter
Hi Peter, first of all thanks for a great channel. I have decided to also get the Jet helical planer, can I ask you what are the dimensions of the base as I have a couple of dolly's that I think I can modify easily to act as as carridge for the Jet.
Hi Tim, 550 mm wide and 505 mm deep. Cheers. Peter
@@NewBritWorkshop Thank You
Great demonstration as always...
I like you’re custom built mobile base, thought you made a video on the mobile base build, where can I find it.
Be safe...

Hi Joe, The original video is here: czcams.com/video/lZVj3AY9rJw/video.html
but the plans have changed a little. If you need the new plans I will need your email address. Peter
Could you list the steps you used to move the jet thicknesser? So I can copy your exact methodology? Thnx.
Hi Kevin, It is a question of "walking" it which is not something I like to give instructions or advice about as it is not easy and there is a risk of hurting yourself. Get a friend to help you - it will be safer. Peter
Hi peter i have just order a jess em clear cut table saw guides. Peter have you see these before.? Peter the jess em guides keeps your timber edge when you are ripping the timber.
Shane Hertzog I have the JessEm set and they work great. I also have to router set. Both work great.
Hi Shane, I have not seen them but they are made by a great company. Cheers. Peter
Hi Peter, why did you buy another joiner, what happened to the last one?
Hi Dan, When I made the dining table I realised that the shorter and narrower JPT260 was not suitable for jobs of that size. I managed the face prep and thicknessing but the jointing was not good enough. You may recall that I got my friend to joint the edges for me. I was very lucky to have family support in the decision and having the dining table here helped in that regard. The old machine went a few days ago to an old friend who has picked up a lovely machine which I had looked after carefully. Cheers. Peter
I have the JJp-12 HH machine also but would like to add the digital counter got height? I am in the US but do you yave a part number or link to where to buy one? Thank you.
Hi Leon, I bought mine from Axminster here in the UK but they no longer stock Jet planers. I tried a Google search "jet planer digital thicknesser display" which showed a lot of UK results, including Amazon UK. Try the same search where you are and see if anything comes up. Good luck. Peter
@@NewBritWorkshop Thank you! Love the machine BTY.
Thank you for all the really wonderful content, Peter. I do enjoy your channel. Can you please share your thoughts on this machine now that you've had it for over a year?
Hi Robert, No problem - I would not swap it for any other although I believe that Axminster may have a rival. I have not been to an Axminster store for nearly a year and so I am a little out o date. Peter
Hi, Peter. As usual after watching one of your videos, I was straight on the Axminster site to look at getting one myself, but there is no mention of Jet planer/thicknessers and only a couple of mentions for other sources on google - unless I’m doing something wrong? Are they still produced, do you know?
Hi Peter - A belated happy birthday. How does this machine compare to the smaller AT260SPT which you have also reviewed I think? Obviously the ease of change over from thicknesser to planer is a major bonus and the fact that it is bigger, but wondered if there were any other benefits. Sadaly I just dont have room in my workshop for either but one day...
Hi Adam, It is brilliant and, as you say, the quick changeover between planing and thicknessing is superb. The finish is better, the machine is much quieter and, of course, it has a wider bed. Peter
Hello Peter, thanks for this review, I am about to order it now. Would you mind sharing your plans for the carriage as I would to build one before the machine arrives.
Thanks
Christophe
Hi Jean-Christophe, In order to get plans or to contact me via email I need your email address. CZcams no longer has a private messaging service and so in order to get in touch you need to place a comment on this or any other video with your email address. The CZcams software should identify and send it to the spam folder for The New Brit Workshop. Nobody will be able to see your email address except you and me. I will then delete your comment so that it does not end up in the public domain and I will then send the plans. Were we to do this the other way around then my comment, with my email address, would appear for all the world to see. Peter
I noticed that you don't feel it's necessary to lock the thicknessing table in place. I'd strongly advise you to do so, as the table can move slightly through vibration. Locking the table will also eliminate any snipe. I'm perfectly certain that you'll enjoy your new machine. Great video as always, thanks for posting.
+1 on that. I have a Hammer (Felder) P/T and eliminated snipe by always locking the thicknessing bed. It's a habit now: Unlock the lever, adjust the thickness, lock the lever....
@@skf957 Hello C G, Thanks for adding to my comment. I too have a Hammer A3-31 and always lock the bed. As you write, it becomes a habit and second nature and of course, it eliminates the dreaded snipe.
Thank you both and I will do my best to follow your advice. Cheers. Peter
This is great, Peter. I just picked up the US version myself. One question, what brand/model is that digital wheel dial you installed? Is that a UK/Europe item only?
EDIT: Ok, I did find it. It's apparently only available in the UK/Europe and perhaps elsewhere where the metric system is the norm.
2nd EDIT: Wow. I was able to order one through Axminster Tools for what seems to be an almost absurdly low cost that includes shipping to the western region of the USA.
Hi Buddy, Well done for finding Axminster - they can ship to most places in the world for amazingly low prices and their kit is excellent. Cheers. Peter
WARNING WARNING THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS but I'll do it anyway 😂
Very little risk the way you did it, perfectly safe in my view. You wouldn't have done it like that otherwise.
I have moved things weighing over 2 tons and have some experience but my worry is that someone might try something like this and get it wrong. Cheers. Peter
Thank you! This is really helpful for people wanting to buy this machine as for those who needs to set it right ;-)
I have a very small workshop, could you please tell me what is the minimum footprint you can get when sliding the fence at the minimum position ? So I can decide if it can fit along my wall without obstructing passage.
Hi Delen, With the machine in the planing setup (beds down) the footprint is approximately 1420 mm x 700 mm. If you put it on a mobile platform (see video below) you will be able to move it around to make the best use of space:
czcams.com/video/lZVj3AY9rJw/video.html
The plans, which now include the sizes for the JPT310 are available free of charge. Peter
@@NewBritWorkshop Thanks Peter. 700mm even with the fence folded at its minimum position? I've already watched your video about the mobile platform, nice work! Where can I find the plans you mentioned?

Hi Benjamin, The plans are on the way. Peter
Belated birthday wishes !
As someone in the market for one I’ve been an avid watcher of your planer thicknesser reviews - by my count this is your 4th ?
I’m curious- what have you done with the old ones ?
Hi Nigel, I traded one of them in through a one off arrangement and sold the other two on ebay. Peter
New Brit Workshop I did wonder how strong your floor would need to be ... congratulations on getting a fine machine - I guess I’m looking at either the AT260SPT or the iTECH 260S - like spiral cutters but also the table lift approach you’ve gone with rather than the split on the AT but then again Axminster is such a good company ... definitely of two minds but a nice problem to have.
Congratulations again.
Happy Birthday Peter! You chose the Jet over the Axminster At260SPT - is there any reason for that? And have you tested the Axminster machine? Aplogies if you have already answered this question before!
Hi Richard, Yes, you will see below - it is the fence that I find easier due to my arthritis. Peter
Here here Peter I have to agree whole heartedly I found mine to be the same, there was nothing I could find fault in, I have all my machines in Jet-Festool and I must say this is the best Jet product I have. The only unit thats not Jet is the SuperMax Drum Sander of which I am also very happy with. I too like you Peter do everything myself with no help so I too rely on Egyptian Pyramid moving techniques, but this time I actually shouted myself a engine block lifter and that made it a piece of cake, but I did like the way you used the Bessey Clamps for holding, I will use that tip in future. But yes mate I am as happy with mine as you are with yours. The best part also is it is sooooo quiet and in a suburban garage that's a huge bonus. My previous unit was a bench model screamer !!!! It would wake the dead. Cheers check my You Tube Channel ...STEVE'S FESTOOL SHED TALK some time.
Hi Steve, Many thanks for that and I will visit your channel. Cheers. Peter
Next video, Peter will show how the pyramids were built using a simple 2x4 and oak blocks...
How did you guess that - brilliant idea but I might tackle Stonehenge first. Cheers. Peter
Hi Peter, congrats on your new toy. Why did you choose this over the Axminister? I am in the pre purchase phase.
Hi John, I have read a few reviews of the Jet and the fence arrangement is the same as my old JPT 260 making switchover very easy. I have a lot of arthritis in my wrists elbows and shoulders and so an easy changeover between planing and thicknessing is essential. Cheers. Peter
I have the axminster spiral version and although I'm very happy with it the jet's conversion from surface to thicknesser mechanism looks far quicker and easier.
Peter, what did you use to degrease the planer beds? It seems like a never ending process, I am using white spirit and denatured alcohol at the moment.
Hi Paul, The same as you and it took about 30 minutes and 20 sheets of kitchen roll. I finished with meths and then applied lubricating wax. Peter
Peter, I'm surprised you risked that. Your theory was logical, however - When I saw the small sizes of the little blocks you were using I was waiting for the loud crash. Next time use wider, longer blocks that can't fall off each other. Is this now your fourth planer of recent times? Enjoy the videos, keep up the good work.
Hi Keith, I was being frugal with the blocks and agree that bigger would be better. I am now on my 4th planer thicknesser in 42 years. I have gone up a class on each change and now realise that this is the one that will see me out. Cheers. Peter
My mother used to say that every time she bought a new ironing board! (She just missed 103 so went through several in the end)
Happy Birthday!
Does that mean you now have a cheap JET machine to sell off to us dedicated viewers? 😇
The old machine was sold a while ago and has been collected. Cheers. Peter
Lifting by the tables is not to be recommended. I’m not sure how else you could do it though.
Very informative video as I have to set my saw on an Axminster castor frame with only one helper.
Hi Jim, many thanks. Peter
Hi Peter, love the planee/thicknesses, any reason you didn't opt to have two separate machines so you don't need to keep switching between the two set ups
Hi Dan, Partly space but also overall price. It is a great machine but I suspect that Axminster will continue to refine their own designs. Cheers. Peter
@@NewBritWorkshop thanks Peter, happy fathers day
@@NewBritWorkshop hi Peter, sorry I'm not sure if you mentioned the power supply for your new planner /thicknesses. I'm currently building a new small workshop at home and I ready for first fix electrical which I am planning on just standard lights and sockets but I plan on making a similar purchase as you down the road and I wanted to be ready. Can a planer work of the normal 13 amp socket or would I need at least one 3 phase (I think for Ireland) socket. Cheers Peter
@@danthechippie4439 Hi Dan, It really needs a 16 amp socket or at least a 16 amp fuse to be on the safe side. I have no problems in my workshop as my distribution board has two 32 amp circuits for 13 amp sockets and one of these is now a 16 amp supply to the planer. Peter
@@NewBritWorkshop thank you Peter, when in doubt I always turn to the new brit workshop for professional and sound advice
hi peter, i wonder when you get a chance, if you can give me a measurement from the wall at the back of the planer to the front of the machine when the fence is all the way at the back?,i assume you have to leave an inch gap behind the back of the fence to allow it to swing up. i have a small shop and am trying to decide if i can squeeze this one in 😄 regards, kevin
Hi Kevin, It is 735 mm with the fence down in planing mode but about 80 mm less when the beds are raised for thicknessing. This could be reduced by a little if the fence is moved forward but that is not the best idea. If it is for storage against a wall then raising the beds would help. Peter
@@NewBritWorkshop thanks Peter, that's considerably narrower than other 12 inch planers, are you still happy with the machine? regards
Hi Kevin, Yes, it is brilliant. I have used it quite a lot and often for extended periods (say 3 to 4 hours with just a short break to swap from planing to thicknessing). Peter
many thanks peter, ive just ordered this model and delivery is approx 2 to 3 weeks! will copy your cyclone idea and im getting a large camvac to handle the dust, looking forward to using it 😀@@NewBritWorkshop
all you need now is the jet drum sander peter ;0)
I wish - I am running out of space now ! Cheers. Peter
Is there any snipe? Thank you .
Hi Iovanesco, No. Snipe is not a characteristic of a particular machine but is caused by either poor adjustment or poor use. Peter
@@NewBritWorkshop Thank you so much ! Cheers.
Old school with common sense so it went fine😀
It would be best if you contact Axminster Customer Services (cs@axminstertools.com). Peter
Did I miss the number, is it 40, 50 or 60?
Hi Ron, My manager told me not to let on but it is one of the three - I think. Cheers. Peter
Shame on you Peter. A young shaver like you shouldn't be so shy!
It was Newton. Archimedes jumped out of his bath 😀
Hi Barrie,
Archimedes said "Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world. " Just Google it to check. Peter
