Just FYI, all of the last new models of the ND-1 have the buffer input mod without the red panel limited edition.
A superior delay among the millions out there. I just picked up a brand new last of the batch few available ND-1 with the buffer mod from Sweetwater for $170 while some were trying to sell used ones and the red panel older IB edition for upwards of $200. I got a brand new one for less. FYI the input buffer mod is superior and you can also calibrate the units input to your rig (see manual). Remains a great delay with 9 presets and great features many modern new delays do not have. Simple and easy to use, great sounding, hard to beat this unit. Very happy I found a new one for a great deal.

I think that the main difference is the red color!!!

I have the original and I was wondering if I was missing anything. Happy to say I like mine better than the modified - slightly. The white text on red is a bit harsh to me as well. Great pedals and fun to use. Stylish, with a wonderful "fiddle factor".

It's not a difference in tone, it just has a better buffer so your original tone doesn't degrade, Head to head not much difference, but I think in a live setting with a long cable run and multiple pedals is where the IB modified will shine.

The effects sound very similar...the original one sounds a little more "warm" on the top ends

  • @h2ophilter

Ive had both, and I prefer the older one's sound. I wasnt really a cork sniffer about the bypass tone improvements. to each their own.

IMO, (and thru my speakers) the original didn't seem to color the guitar's true sound, but the modded seemed to have added a certain "fatness" to it. For me, I'd prefer the original because I have a need to hear every little twang, chug, and growl from my amp. I have already removed a few pedals from my rig because of the colors they add.

i think you might be testing the same identical unit. Possible the input cal has been run on one of them.
This is from tc electronic on the ND-1 now out of production:
Nova Delay: From which serial number is it fitted with the iB-Mod?
    Question
From which serial number has does the "standard" Nova Delay pedals feature the hardware upgrade from the iB-Modified Nova Delays with the red face plate?
    Answer
All Nova Delay pedals with a serial number higher than 9091796 are identical to the iB-Modified ones hardware-wise. This was implemented in January 2012.

Paul A where can I find the source to this information?

  • @thesjkexperience
    @thesjkexperience Před 11 lety +1

The TC site says all Nova Delays are made after Jan 2012 have the I.B. Modified hardware. These still sound rather different and I like the slightly softer sound of the original. My only complaint was the buffer in my ND killed the dynamics of my playing and other pedals. It was sure a lot easier to use live than my Timeline. Strymon's new library editor should help a little. The Mobius is so easy to use I wish the Timeline was easier.

The Original one is Brand New, so what you say could be true, i dont know when they switched over to the newer buffer, if they did switch, thanks for the info.

The review needed to cover some lead examples, which is what I would use the pedal for.

nice to finally see a demo of these two together. is your original old enough to have the old buffer? the newest nova's have the ib modified buffer's i hear. they seem to have discontinued the red ib modified version and just sell one version now.

The only thing they should of have done is give you more presets. Also the mix control is kind of weird. I found it hard to get the right balance of dry and wet. I really like mine, mainly for the huge display. Needs more presets. 30 would be nice.

If you turn half a milimeter the volume knob or the EQ section you will change 100x more the tone than this pedal versions. That said, I believe that technological improvements lead us down new paths and we can also buy the previous version on second hand if we like it. Would anyone have noticed if they had not notified us?

Hi Shnobel, great comparison. What is the 7 digit serial number on your original ND on this clip? This determines pre or post iB/buffer manufacturing ND's. Thanks :)

Noticable, but slightly imho... I think the IB unit isn't worth the extra coin unless there is a significant difference.

  • @ggman946

Not much difference. Differences are more apparent with overdrive. ib modified trails nicer. Has softer edges, warmer tone. I almost prefer the original with clean tones. But these are *slight* differences.

  • @DimitrisMiyaki

I think that the main difference is when the pedals are in bypass mode. :-/

  • @rjonsolo1

    The difference is so little.
To me the IB sounds a little cleaner, but thinner.

Are you kidding??? This is really top crazy. If we have no other problems like this in the world, than I am really happy. But anyway thank you for compare. But I can tell to all people, nobody can hear the differenz without some Hifi earphones or some drugs in his head 😹

I’ve been looking for the impedance of the old nova delay Vs the new one to get the real differences but I can’t find it.
