Build a tree propagation nursery. Collect seeds and grow tube stock of the trees and plants you want to grow on the property. You are going to need tens of thousands of trees to do what you want to do with the place, it will be cost effective to build the nursery. It will also be faster to get to where you want to get to. Just need a bed with a heat trace in it and some misting sprays on a timer. Some shade cloths to protect the young plants from the sun. An automatic spray system and build dome stands to sit the tube stock on.

2 points I thought after posting this.
-If you use bamboo for structural uses it is a good option, but you better be careful because if you don't treat it correctly, it all will crack. Inside this fractures water will accumulate and rot the bamboo from the inside.
-Bamboo is not native to Portugal by any means, if you find a small bamboo garden in a neighbouring town or so, you could help and clear the old canes so the little ones can grow. You help somebody and get free material!!!

Dave, I'm sure this advice is probably too late, but when buying equipment or large purchases from out of the country, you can use a buying agent. This can be your bank, or a professional firm. They basically hold the funds in escrow until the delivery is made. They give the seller a bond or guarantee of payment to release the goods. There is a small fee for this service, but is a big piece of mind and minimum risk. Maybe next time.

Three things I would like to see you guys add to the project.
    1. Tree nursery to help accelerate the reforestation efforts.
    2. Bee hives, because they are cool and will help pollinating all the different plants in the area.
    3. Mushrooms. Im not sure if the climate is right for this, but it would be a delicious addition to the kitchen. They could also be used to break down all the organic material that results from cutting down the Mimosas etc.

    • @Uriagelarafle
      @Uriagelarafle Před 8 dny +14

second this; by far the most important factors in a regeneration project. Nursery because you will need thousands of trees, bees will be the front line pollinators and fungi for decomposition and food, I am sure common pleurotus varieties will very quickly adapt to growing off the dead mimosas on top of providing a quality food. You have the trees already, you need to add variety by establishing a nursery which would also help in propagating the native oaks, fungi will be the necessary symbiotic relationship and will also be the communication system of the whole area (it's wild but that's how a forest communicates especially in the cases of fire, through the web of mycelium running underground) also mushrooms turn dead wood in healthy alive bunched up logs of mycelium effectively eliminating the risk of the dead wood catching fire, and bees as a line of pollinators to close down the loop and tie everything all together. If you dial these 3 adding to the kampers effort, the land regeneration will take off and automate itself.

Concerning the smelly compost: typically that means you have too much “green” material. Thats the stuff that decomposes fast: food scraps, fresh cuttings, grass, etc. Try adding more “browns” or slower decomposing things like waste shredded paper, wood chips, sawdust, fire ash, dried leaves. If it is consistently smelly, you might need a higher mixture of browns to greens. Another solution is move it farther away from people so the smell isn’t as bothersome!

I was kinda thinking the same thing. To have fresh food scraps open on top is not the best. Better to have some wood chips (which they will have plenty soon) in a pile next to the compost. Then when ever you add a pile of "green" material coming in they could turn it over with the top layer of the compost and add some "browns" in. It's the middle of the compost that majority of the action happens anyway.

The pond needs to have some type of air flow through it to stop all the algae over powering it, if you can get hold of a couple of solar power pumps and just let the sun do the work of aeration for you, also do some research in beneficial bacteria for a pond of your size in case you need to add some and the right type of plants that will work to keep the pond healthy, then with a bit of luck thrown in you should have a healthy bio diverse pond that will not be so hazardous to your health should you need to jump in there again. The sooner you can get some pumps in there though to aerate the water the better as it’s a honestly a health hazard that is totally avoidable and any type of pump is better than absolutely nothing but I know a solar pump of some kind would be preferable, maybe if you find a electric pump you could convert it too solar if you can’t find a big enough solar one. This season is so good and I am so glad to have the vlogs back as it’s a staple part of my summer, watching how much hard work you put into getting the land safe and healthy again not just for people but the wildlife around you makes me happy ❤❤ sending love from the uk ❤❤

An idea, for future composting. Consider a steep rather than flat location. Multiple, tiers,( the height you want. You start filling the top, or highest bin, when time comes to turn it, simply scoot the compost over the edge, into the next lower bin. A multiple stepped operation. The actual design is up to you, removable gates, or walls, maybe partially dug out of the hillside you are working on. The top level would be the receiving area, the steps, variable stages of working compost, with the lowest level, the place to eventually gather the finished compost. I hope you like this idea.

You need to turn in fairly often and add roughage (straw/dried grass is best, but you could also use woodchips.) You need air moving through the material to make things run smoothly, and you should be getting good dirt in less than a year (although if you use woodchips it could take a bit longer than that.) The Reason Why The Climate is Hot: Nothing Can Ever Surpass the Truth
“I have always been keen on guiding the astray who followed those who earned the wrath of Allaah. Unfortunately, they were never guided because they did not use their minds to understand the Words of Allaah in the Great Qur'an, to believe it is the Truth. But, they will never understand it (the Qur'an) except through the torment of Allaah, Lord of the heavens, earth, and what is between them, and Lord of the Great Throne. In line with the Word of Allaah the Exalted:
      Qur'an - Surah: al-Israa' - Verses: 58-59
O mankind, here you are feeling the approach of the torment of Saqar, the greatest calamity. And I have already told you with truth that you have entered the summer of Saqar starting from 2023, despite having been constantly warning you of the passing of planet Saqar for 19 years. Unfortunately, the more I warn you, the more you run away and disbelieve in the existence of Allaah. Today's nations are like the people of the prophet Noah, they do not fear the majesty of Allaah (See Qur'an, Surah: Noah). Anyway, following a sweltering summer at the North Pole, the people of planet Earth, in both north and south, have declared the arrival of the autumnal equinox. At the same time, residents of Antarctica declared that the vernal (spring) equinox had begun there. And far is that from happening.
I had already given you a ruling before with the truth in a previous statement that the summer of Saqr was on the horizon of the Antarctic continent of the planet Earth, eliminating the winter of the far pole where nobody lives. Then, Saqar annihilated the winter of countries that share the Antarctic climate. Their winter has been replaced with heat, so that they may understand what I am warning them of. Those who live in the Antarctic are waiting for which spring after the annihilation of the Antarctic winter? Do they not reason?! Here is the summer of Saqar, which will attack the two temperate seasons (autumn in the north of the Earth and spring in the south of the Earth). And it will scientifically fail all your weather forecasting devices. It will mystify your knowledge and destroy your credibility among the peoples of the worlds. Indeed, ultimate proofs belong to Allaah, O worshippers of the Physics of Nature. We shall wait and see if the Physics of Nature, given to you by Allaah as a means of mercy for you, will submit to the power of Allaah, thus it turns against you and makes your knowledge equal to zero. Anyway, given that the summer of Saqar swept through the four seasons, there will be a war of hurricanes of fire attacking forests and homes, and a flood of water pouring down at the suitable time whenever Allaah wills and not when you will. So where are the inventors of artificial rain to extinguish wildfires if they are truthful? I truly pity Arabs for being manipulated by Arab and non-Arab devils to demolish the fundamental beliefs in the clear verses of the great Qur'an, thus they believe in the opposite of the challenge of Allaah in His Words:
      Qur'an - Surah: al-Waqi’ah- Verses: 68-70
Lo and behold, non-Arabs and Arabs! I swear by Allaah, I am thinking of disbelievers in the eras of prophets and I find them closer to knowing Allaah than the nations of this atheist world in the era of Allaah's caliph al-Mahdi. Disbelievers in the era of prophets were closer to becoming believers if it was not for their association of partners besides Allaah owing to their blind following to their fathers. See their response to the messengers sent by their Lord in the Word of Allaah the Exalted:
      Qur'an - Surah: az-Zumar- Verse: 38
So call upon your gods that you worship other than Allaah to save you from the evil of Allaah's cosmic and Corona war if you are truthful. Here you have entered the summer of Saqar, so do not wait for the four known seasons from now on because they along with winter in the south pole and the coming winter have been replaced by the summer of Saqar. Do you reckon I am talking nonsense? How strange your stance is, non-Arabs and Arabs! Logically if Nasser Mohammed al-Yamani were truly truthful in announcing the entrance of planet Earth in the climate of planet Saqar, the four seasons would be annihilated that perhaps you may think. Indeed Allaah's proofs are far-reaching. Planet Saqar is going to be blazed by the command of Allaah to be a mercy from Allaah upon you for it is better for you to feel its blaze than aboding inside it. Also, perhaps feeling its hotness causes you any remembrance. Indeed, Hellfire (Saqar) will produce fuming and growling sounds towards the Earth and they shall surround the four cardinal directions (South, North, East, and West). This is the loud roaring of Planet Saqar which appears to mankind on the horizon from time to time, in line with the Word of Allaah the Exalted:
      {إِذَا رَأَتْهُم مِّن مَّكَانٍ بَعِيدٍ سَمِعُوا لَهَا تَغَيُّظًا وَزَفِيرًا ‎﴿١٢﴾‏} صدق الله العظيم [سورة الفرقان]
      Qur'an - Surah: al-Furqan- Verse: 12
Because it will pass on the Earth from a distance, it will not collide with it. You will see the circle of planet Saqar when it rises from the far Southeast to the far Southwest. It will be conspicuous in the visible universe. On the night it passes, it will obscure the horizons of planet Earth from the four cardinal directions. You are also going to witness the sign of the evident smoke of a painful torment. So wait, indeed I too am waiting with you, and I know what I am saying, in line with the Word of Allaah the Exalted:

This can create some water flow, maybe can help you to improve the smell of the "lake".

I put a thin layer of soil (usually the not nice soil) on top of my compost every week. Keeps the smell down. Helps speed up composting, and improves the soil that I add. I have two compost piles. When one is full, I start on the second letting the first compost down. My no. 1 composter is almost full so I will be switching soon to no.2. I mix and stir and add soil to no. 1 while I am filling no. 2. By the time no.2 is full I can use the soil in no. 1 so it can be started again. I have in the past had a third compost pile for the really hard to compost items - like melon rinds - and I also throw soil on it once a week. I do not compost weeds, seeds, or tubers as they grow so well in compost piles.

It might be a good idea to plant some fresh white willow (native to portugal and relatively fire resistant) branches along the far side of the pond and weave them into a natural barrier to really shore-up the pond against erosion. Then plant some natural water filtering plants around the low edges to start filtering the water.
Over time, the willow branches will grow and provide a sustainable source of weaving material.

      @job4113 Před 8 dny +1

Yes! That bank has great risk for erosion and local willow is an excellent structure that is easy to keep trimming the small shoots. And now that light is getting to the retention pond, serious algae bloom has occurred, which depletes the dissolved oxygen in the standing water

Good job on the idea of reforestation of native oaks etc.
If you do decide to help the oaks regenerate, here are two things I've learned from my own experience in planting native oaks (Garry oak or Oregon oak) for my area to restore the ones that were cut down 100-150 years ago:
Gather the acorns and put them in batches in buckets of water. After a day or so, the ones that float are the "bad" ones. The ones that didn't float are the "good" ones.
When you put the nuts into pots, be SURE that you cover the pot with something that is squirrel/rodent-proof. I lost more than a dozen acorns to squirrels digging up the acorns that had already begun to sprout, and they even dug up and destroyed a seedling that was almost 25 cm high. For us in the States, "chicken wire" is a good solution. I don't know what it is called in Europe, but it's wire fencing that's formed from multiple strands of wire linked together to form hexagons. It's cheap and it works to keep squirrels out. If you suspect you have lots of mice, use wire netting with smaller holes.

I was reading on the research module about the compost, but I cannot reply there so I do it here. The original reply from Reifersam is correct about adding the carbon rich material. If the pile is too smelly you will need more air, less moisture, and more dry carbon rich material. Probably the best method to make your own compost without manure and without having to turn it regularly is the Johnson and Su bio reactor. Sounds intimidating, but it isn't. And another very good scientific source about producing compost is a channel called Transform Compost from a Canadian scientist. It is all about enough but not too much aeration, enough but not too much moisture, the correct mixture of ingredients, and temperature. You want about 2/3 carbon rich materials, and about 1/3 nitrogen rich materials. A good functioning compost pile does not produce any bad smell at all. But instead it will produce an earthy smell.

I've grown up in the Swedish countryside. While it's very different environments and climates, my mother brought us up to be aware of our environment and how our behaviour affects it. She's a biologist, and despite trying my best too, I have never been able to find a native Swedish plant she can't identify within minutes. (And if it took longer than two minutes, she was humouring me to make me think I'd won. If I'd found one, she promised to buy me ice cream)
Safe to say, I also find it very conflicting to cut down trees and bushes. But I comfort myself with knowing that invasive species are long term harmful, no matter their current effect. Sometimes when I'm in need for some emotional processing, I'll grab my gardening shears and bike down to the riverside, and rip and tear into the invasive weeds. It's quite the comforting feeling for me to be hacking away at lupins and other invasive weeds that suffocate the native environment, and go "SLICE!, MAIM!, DIE!" 😄😅 exceptional anger management.
And then when I've hacked away at evil invasive species and calmed down, I'll sneak seeds for native low-growing and mow-resilient plants into the lawn of my apartment complex.😉

It is really good to see you starting on the clearing of the invasive species to begin the process of restoring the land. I am sure you guys are looking at all possibilities but here is my short wish list.
1 - Water harvesting and slowing the water down (hugely beneficial to the land and the best defence against drought / fire). The “leaky dams” you started with the felled mimosa in this clip are an excellent start, and your new digger for Swales will be fantastic.. Great CZcams clips all over. (Dutch Farmer/ Salah 50 years / Indian Water Competition / Australian Water Harvesting / Jon Lui Loess Plareau).
2 - Holistic/ managed grazing reintroduces animals into the eco system and that will be vital for the land regeneration. (Mixed small herd of goats, pigs, chickens, a donkey, cows, sheep within one portable electric fence would do a huge amount of clearing the invasive species, activating and feeding the soil, and allowing the native seed bank waiting in the soil to propagate). Fantastic videos on this as well. (Gabe Brown / Knepp Project / Alan Savory Zimbabwe).

Collect plastic buckets from the neighbors and use them to plant potatoes.

What's weird is that they've brought in at least one backhoe showing that it can do what they need perfectly fine. You also don't have the expensive turn pass-through that eventually needs replaced because it will leak hydraulic fluid. Honestly it seems like the person that was looking for something is just dead set on an excavator when they would get more use of a backhoe or loader tractor with removable backhoe.

@@shoopnooop2952 Exactly! It's soooo useful for general hauling, ploughing, and excavating! Come to think of it, aside from digging, they would be much better served by a Bobcat than the excavator.
The decision makes no sense to me unless a backhoe is significantly more expensive (100s of thousands vs 1000s). I doubt it though. Plus, they're so common that parts are easily available and may even be interchangeable across makes and models.

Our house is next to a huge oak which has a preservation order, and we also have a squirrel so we pull up so many oak seedlings from our patio pots every year. I'm not sure we can send those to you as I'm pretty sure they'd die, but we can definitely collect acorns for you to seed your land. The squirrel will definitely find and eat some of the acorns he buries, but not all of them. Just throw them on the ground, and some will feed your local wildlife, and the rest will become seedlings for future oaks.

Rocks are good for erosion control, then plant natives, like Gladiolus illyricus bulbs. Once you have an excavator you can terrace the areas around water features, then use stones you find for steps. Plant natives’ plants and grass to hold the soil. The willows and eventually the oaks will shade the water and prevent the algae, till they do skim and then use the algae to cover the compost.

Unlike other similar projects and stuff I never see you guys buy something and think "wow what a waste of money." Every time it's "yep that's going to save a tonne of time and money in the long run."

I think I've seen some other people say this, but the pond could really benefit from some water-growing plants! I don't know if you'd want to plant them in the pond directly as that would take up a lot of the free space for swimming and water storage, but maybe some floating plant islands? I've seen them made in a few ways, like planting the seedlings of water plants in rafts made from jute bags, linen fabric, or even straw or flexible wood shoots (baby mimosas?) At the start they might need some floating assistance, but when the plants get stronger I've seen the rafts able to float without plastic bottles or the like. Maybe some plant islands would be a good shout until you can get your hands on some good plants for the sides of the pond?

Suggestion: Johnson Su bioreactors for making compost
With all the potential wood chips from regular tree clearing, start multiple Johnson Su bioreactors and make compost! Add several more reactors each year and rotate them out gradually. No turning, reusable setup materials, environmentally friendly, lower maintenance. They do take time and space and wood chips, but it seems like you have all of those.
And it’s a good way to put the mimosas to work for you!

Whilst I can't speak for its effectiveness with composting human waste, a methane digester would help to deal with food waste and provide you with methane gas, which you can probably use in one way or another

Hola amigos! A proposal: Rent a saw mill. 1-2 persons sawing around 2"x 2" wood from the mimosas for secondary structures what you most likely will have there. Even bigger timber is possible too but just thinking that amount of mimosas and you will have projects there in future too, so why not use it for better purposes than just burning it? Also 22mm x 45mm is quite usefull size too, if you have plenty of it. (Shadow fences, gardening, under structures on outside walls, light roof structures etc..) So, if getting pile of it to dry for later use, you will thank me later ;)

For the compost bin, it needs to be turned more and the moisture level needs to be not too much. Also you need to check that you don't have too much green matter to brown proportion. Another way to help this is to keep adding soil to the pile, the soil will have beneficial bacteria and worms to break down the plant matter and your compost will be pre mixed and ready to be used for growing plants.

Please explain where the soil comes from, do they further disturb the soil and fungal growth that requires years to establish? So little, so mulch.

@@Neicorr It doesn't take much, please also see the ground contouring they did during their swale making between the base camp and the office. A shovel or two tossed over the food scraps will accelerate the decomposition as well as reducing the smell. Adding leaves, bark and small wood chips will also help.
As far as disturbing the soil and fungal growth, yes, yes it will, along with almost everything else they are doing. You're going to be really upset when you see what they do with a digger.

Looks like you need a wood chipper. Regarding the compost bins, they really need to be bigger. At least 2m x 2m to get hot enough. Air will only penetrate about 60cm into the heap so u can add some drainpipes with holes in to aid airflow. Lastly layer the heap, woodchip, grass cuttings and kitchen waste. Fill to the top then leave to settle, when it halves in size turn it into another bin and repeat. Collect and add all of the teams urine.
