Went to see them (with Al Jardine and Brian Wilson) in Montreal a little more than a year ago. A birthday gift from my wife.
I very much like them but I would'nt call myself a diehard fan.
At the end of the show they were shaking hand with people down the stage, took my chance and went to shook hand with Al Jardine and next thing I knew I was in my wife's arm crying like a 60 years old little boy who just realize that their music have been part of my life for more than 50 years.

I agree that Al is underrated, but IMO only with regards to the larger music-listening public, including many BB fans. But within the BB, I think Al's role was commensurate with his talent, and how often he was featured speaks of the group's high regard for him. He sang many BB songs, including one of their 4 number one hits, "Help Me Rhonda." In all, I think Al played a significant role, and isn't it incredible that he lived through the crazy '60s, a member of one of the most successful bands in the history of R&R, and he lived an amazingly successful life free of drugs, horror stories, and even free of all drama/lawsuits that afflicted Mike and Brian. Al did the whole RockNRoll lifestyle about as cleanly and respectfully as a man can do it. Congrats!

Before seeing the videos I didn't realize Al sang lead on as many songs as he did. I suppose it was hard not to be over-shadowed by the talented Wilsons and attention-grabbing Mike Love. Though low profile, he was/is very good as a lead singer, and as I've said elsewhere second only to Carl.

In the 60's I was at the beach every day in Huntington Beach. The best way to hear the bass in Beach Boy songs in those days was to tape my small 9 volt transistor radio to the mouth of a quart Mason jar. AM radio didn't do justice to music in those days. That's why record sales were so high. It was the only way to get the real sound of a song.
