Over 22 years ago i sat in my small living room at 2 a.m. after working an evening shift at my dead end job. I watched this movie while my wife and kids slept in an even smaller bedroom. It inspired me to get off my ass and change my situation instead of complain about it. It forever changed our lives for the better.

@@bbryant9455 I've personally seen 4/5 of the nominating performances. Hanks in Philadephia, Liam Neeson in Schindler's List which would've gotten my vote, Lawrence Fishburne as Ike Turner in What's Love Got to Do With It which scared the shit out of me with how cold and soulless he played that role. Then Daniel Day-Lewis was pretty impressive "In the Name of the Father." The first three I could not replace with Rudy. I'd have to re-watch In the Name of the Father and then see Anthony Hopkins in The Remains of the Day. But all those roles required a more dramatic a more conflicted or more morose character. Plus Hollywood isn't very big on super motivational or sports movies. But he might've made my top 5 performances if I was a voter.

I have a similar story. After my parents divorced when I was 12, all the dumb female teachers one day said I had adhd because I was always day dreaming in class. Yeah...my mom and dad just divorced, I was sad and angry. I was thinking about the good times that would never happen again. So, I get put in the adhd/add special needs class. Immediately I am singled out and picked on for being a minority. Roughest, shittiest 5 years of my life. We never learned anything new, we were always treated like retarded problem children. Some of those racist fucks really did have mental issues. Most of those guys are now in prison because the special needs add/adhd class sets you up for failure later in life. They dont get you ready for college or help get you in any interesting classes/electives. Anyway, 5 years of that and I wasn't learning anything and I was constantly fighting to defend myself. Sophmore year in HS the teachers went on strike. I just gave up after that. I stopped going to school. Years later I earned my HS diploma thru night school. Did a stint in the army for a decade. After I left the army, I earned both my Associates and Bachelors in Criminal Justice. It was a big deal for me to graduate from college and my family couldn't have been more proud of me on graduation day. Graduating from college was a big fuck you to everyone who always told me that I'd grow up to be a loser or was too stupid to go to college. I got the last laugh.

Few know that is Moreau, but it's the only place they could adequately film things during autumn, as the rest of the campus is full of students.
On another note, and knowing this as my brother did the Holy Cross/ND thing, Notre Dame *typically* requires Holy Cross students to do two years before serious consideration for acceptance. Rudy likely knew this, but cinema plays up the tension of each rejection.

Plus, there are non-Domers nationwide, so I don't see the issue of you cheering on the Irish till you die. If there's one thing about US sports it's that anyone can cheer on any team.

I can attest, had good grades but wanted to keep playing a little ball, maybe develop into a better big college prospect and I tried to do that, however if you let your grades slip, and want to work your resume up as you transition to college life, it's a huge stepping stone...and cheaper, trust me, take it, being in one place for 4 to 5 years can be cumbersome, it's good to work your way up to that grand finale of education. Heck, after your undergrad years, there are advanced degrees you can go after - go through the whole process over again if you're good enough! - just study something useful!

I spent 5 years in the military as an enlisted man and 20+ years working for the federal government. After I quit my job and wasn't working, my wife talked me into applying for community college even though she knew I would have trouble with math (I know, I'm Asian and I'm not good at math, go figure.) It took me 3 years to graduate from community college but I ground through and stayed the course. I graduated from community college and transferred to the University at Albany in 2015 and graduated two years later with a BA in History. I want to eventually go to graduate school to earn my Masters and my Ph.D. If it wasn't for my wonderful wife, I wouldn't have earned my degree. I can understand where Rudy was coming from.

A lot of hard work, and a little nudging from a higher authority always helps.
Remember when I read my acceptance letter. I was a baseball player, but by no means a blue chip prospect, went to JUCO for two years and studied my ass off, just like I did in high school, played ball a couple more years. Got acceptance to a fantastic civil engineering school, and I read it and went quiet for a minute. My Mom was there and my Stepdad, I looked up at them and said with a smile, "I got in." I won't say the school but, I have family ties to it, and it is very tough academically. When I called my Dad to tell him, he was floored and estatic. Never tried to steer me one way or the other, but it worked out I was going to his alma mater (soon to be our alma mater), a team he had me rooting for growing up and now I got to be part of first hand. Was never the big college jock like he was, but us engineers had ways of competing just the same, and it was all a great ride.

This scenes means a lot to me. I've dreamed of going to medical school for a long time, especially in the MD PhD program. I went through all the interviews and was wait listed on each program. I had to adjust and apply to graduate school instead as my second choice. I received a full scholarship and was about to go into graduate school fulltime. However, I received a single line message one day after shadowing in surgery and falling asleep in class that said I got accepted. This scene was pretty much how I reacted.

This is such an inspiration. The days that I don't feel like studying I just watch Rudy clips. After that I feel like studying all day. I am 22 and just graduated with my associates. I plan on transferring in January to the university. I am scared because I am going 11 hours away from home. Everyone is telling me that I am crazy for going because everyone I know wants to stay close to home. Rudy has helped me get the courage to do this.

The real story was that he made it to and graduated from Notre Dame with a learning disability.
The tackle - or half tackle, really - of the Georgia Tech quarterback was not actually the pinnacle of his time there. No players turned their jerseys in to pressure Dan Divine to put him in the game. The was very limited chanting of his name.
It was quite an inspiring story, but it wasn’t centered on football.

When I was a kid, it was my greatest dream to go to Furman University and play football. I had issues similar to Rudy that made me struggle in school, and although I was big, I didn't have much athletic ability. But I got excellent recommendations from teachers, closed out my high school senior year with much better grades, and busted ass trying to get in. I'll never forget the day I got my acceptance, much like Rudy, I cried, my parents cried, it was incredible.

There is more truth to this movie (and moves like The Rookie) than one will ever realize. If you really really want something bad enough in life - your heart, passion and drive can make up for a lot of what you do not have in skill and can make it happen. Never ever give up if it's in your heart - and of course prayers to The Lord and Mary help.

It gets emotional just to watch this at CZcams. When I heard that Sean Astin had been cast as Samwise Gamgee, I went back in my mind to this scene from RUDY and Sean's portrayal of this character who, with odds stacked against him, refuses to give up and thought, "Yes... yes! That's a fine choice!" Just as important to this scene, I feel, is the very moving orchestral score by the late great Jerry Goldsmith. Movie magic.
