Right on time again! I’m always soooo confused about pruning my blackberries and raspberries. This shed a better light on the subject. If I could subscribe again to your channel, I would 😂. As always, thanks, Gary!💚🪴
Thanks for the double subscribing. And the cool thing is the canes can get pruned when the living ones leaf out, in case people are unsure.

Good tip. I planted raspberry 2 years ago and was unsure what i should cut. Thanks Gary. I better understand the new vs old canes and will wait to definitely know which ones to cut.
Yep and if unsure, cut what is not leafing and flowering. There is technically no rush.

I had 3 blueberries ☹️
Hi Gary, thanks for your gardening tips, they have been quite helpful. I always wanted to grow black berries. Can you please let me what variety that you grow. Thank you
Those are Arapaho I believe. Any clumping thornless variety works well.

Gary, 2 questions: 1-does the variety of Blackberry matter as far as 1st year growth, 2nd year fruiting? Your way is so easy, I want to make sure my variety I get is pruned in that fashion. 2-When do you plant new blackberry plants? Is to late for this year? Great video, thank you so much for your efforts, greatly appreciated!!
You can plant blackberries now for sure. Most blackberry varieties work this way. You can seek out varieties that might bear fruit twice but I treat them all this way. Anyway when the canes are done, they die off.
My berries are still new but will need this valuable info to continue their journey. Will it hurt trim the tops to maintain a height?? What would the be shortest you could go for raspberries. Thanks so much! Have a great day. Be well from Canada 🇨🇦
If you trim the tops it does reduce flowers and future fruit. The flowers do produce across most of the cane but probably vary variety to variety. Pruning the tops early could produce lower side shoots too. I would experiment on a couple. Cheers!

Thank you for all your helpful videos. I was told that you can put tomato paste or canned tomatoes around plants that like acidity to put acid in the soil?
Well that is pricey to do as you'd need a lot. Better off buying elemental sulfur.

Question What NPK should i be using on my blackberries? Im also trying raspberries and grapes again and have new blueberry plants. can i use the same fertilizers for them ?.. lol wish me luck. Thanks so much, this is an awesome video :D
The same fertilizer is fine. Just need NPK represented. Blueberries are the only one I would get a specialized fertilizer too. That would be an acidic water soluble to use on occasion.
Yep, I'm sure my dog would eat the soil too, with fish emulsion. Good to know what you recommend, thanks. She would also go after alfalfa pellets!!!
Yeah I take more in the garden now to get use to it and she just eats soil.

When I feed alfalfa cubes to my horses, my dogs always pilfer cubes. They chew on them, not always consume them. I don’t get it!
@@e.duncan6256 My dog likes many veggies from the garden. I think the pellets just smell like (veggie) food to her, lol.
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Lol, I'm not that generous! Plus I think my dog might eat so much she would get sick 🤢.
My raspberries have already come to life and new canes and leaves growing like crazy. Blackberries are waking up and blueberries already have flowers! Even some of my strawberries have flowers. I hace my blackberries and raspberries in 5 gallon buckets and was wondering what you recommend to use to keep the branches from falling to the ground and keep them all upright and more contained? Thank you!
My strawberries just got some flowers. It's tuff in a small bucket. I dont have any specific suggestions.

Blackberries - mine are primocanes and can fruit on 1st and 2nd year growth. This will be their second season and instinctively, I have already been looking at cane color. I do this with my rose bush canes as well. Great tip. Blueberries - also 2nd year; they survived the winter in their grow bags (yay!) - do you think transplanting into the ground will delay their ability to fruit this season? I know it can take a few seasons regardless. Not stressing, just curious. Thanks Gary!
If they are going from containers to soil, I think it is fine. There isn't that much root disturbance,
Hello Gary have you any advice for dealing with Spotted Wing Drosphila on raspberries? It seems hopeless I am considering digging out my raspberries to use the area for a different crop. Thanks
That I dont. I know when the show up but when things are infestations, I use insect dusts before fruiting.

I have several varieties of black berries (including Arapaho), but very little fruit. over the course of 18-20 years. Plants are healthy, vigorous, and spreading. Three years ago the advice was to "tip off " the second year canes at 5-6 feet above the ground to somehow force them to flower/fruit. This has made no difference. Any ideas? Kind Regards, Craig
So I would look at increasing the potassium and phosphorus around the the plant base. I am not saying that is the issue but it is the next step to look at.

If you've got your second year canes getting ready to produce, where are the first year canes? Have they not broken through the soil yet?

What type of blackberries are yours? And are they erect or trailing? I just planted four triple crown blackberries which are supposed to be trailing... But I need to make some type of trellis or containment for them. Are yours just growing up against cattle panel? It looks like there's support only on one side of the canes. Perhaps that works for erect blackberries? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Erect/clumping. I believe they are Arapaho. Any variety needs support. They are weaved through the cattle panel.

5:37 Don't tell my you ran out of all your clearance holly tone/holly food to use on your berry bushes? Bah, I'm guessing plant tone will work well, just as holly tone/holly food works well enough on non acid loving plants. I keep hearing in the news that the cicadas are supposed to be really bad this year. *HEADS UP!*
Yeah the Hollytone is gone. Its just a basic granular now but it also was on sale.

May be a myth - that raspberries and black berries should not be planted near each other due to disease issues.
I think only if you have diseases that show up, it's a concern but these are in separate parts of the road.
