The Camino Primitivo begins in the city of Oviedo, the capital of the Asturias region. From there, it travels through the rugged mountains of the Picos de Europa and the forests of Galicia before arriving in Santiago de Compostela. The route is approximately 325 kilometers long and typically takes about two weeks to complete.
Along the way, pilgrims can experience the beautiful landscapes and rich cultural heritage of northern Spain. They will pass through charming towns and villages, with plenty of opportunities to sample the local cuisine and meet other pilgrims.
The Camino Primitivo is a physically demanding route and requires a good level of fitness. However, the sense of accomplishment and spiritual fulfillment that comes from completing the journey makes it a rewarding experience for those who are up to the challenge.

I hope please God that the ground isn't as wet in September when I start. Looking at it, looks daunting. Did my first Camino 10 years ago Camino Francés but now I'll be 73😜consoling to hear about the man in his 80's 🙏
It's the luck of the draw...
Walked this one with trainer and sandals, it certainly is possible. Great views, lovely hills
Yep... Did you do the Pola de Allende or Monasterios route.

Thank you very much. Glad you enjoyed it.
Thankyou Rolf for making this video and sharing it with us. The Primitivo looks superb.
Thank you! Glad you liked the video.
Looks like you love the Camino, Cows, and Coffee.
And while you try your best to enjoy the Rain, Windmills, and Untidy Alberges, you wish they weren’t there. 😂
I need my coffee in the mornings....:)

Nice videos!
Thank you! Very much appreciated.
Oh Rolf you’ve given me such confidence I can manage the Primitivo (single 73 year old Australian woman ) I’ve been searching for a really good (light weight ) poncho but can’t find the front zip opening …could you advise the brand name of yours …it’s a good safe colour as well …buen Camino xx
Sorry for the late reply. My poncho is from Decatlon in Spain. The have them in all the stores but i will send you the link shortly.
Thank You for the video. I'm starting Del Norte in Santander mid Aug and considering swap to Primitivo in Villaveciosa.. I love ocean+wind and mountains+wind so now have something to think about :)
You are welcome. The Norte is also a beautiful Camino... Just that there is a lot of asphalt. I wish you a Buen Camino!
Thank you Rolf for sharing with us your Camino Primitivo. I will start in september 23 also this Camino and I look forward to start this Camino!
Enjoy... That is about the same time i walked it. I wish you a Buen Camino!!!
Great! I really enjoy this way you picked it up. I have a plan for next spring. Thank you so much!
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. I wish you a Buen Camino!
Está genial!!!
Gracias Freddy!!!
Thank you for sharing your experience. This brought me right back. to my Primitivo last July a great walk and I dare to say my favourite thus far after the Frances, Norte and Portuguese.. I really enjoyed watching this. Looks like we had the same great meal in Pola De Allende at the hotel.
Thank you. The meal at Polo was amazing.... specially after a long walk!
Magical route
It is indeed...

Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for making and sharing your experience, such a nice film and choice of music. I’m yet to walk my first Camino but I hope to walk one soon, maybe this year.
Go for it! You will love it!
That was fantastic to watch , you have made my decision on what Camino to do very simple
Thank you... Buen Camino!
Gracias
;)
Great
Thanks!
Your videography is outstanding. I’m enjoying the story and journey. I do have a question about shoes. Other than a short rocky section I don’t see anything that requires boots, especially like you’re wearing. Is it a cultural thing? I’m from US and it seems to me a good pair of trail runners or even a pair of Asics would be a better choice.
Thank you. Trail runners are good... but once you hit rocky sections they offer very little ankle support and it is easy to sprain your ankles... especially on the long 5 or 6 km downhill sections. I also prefer boots in mud....
Beautiful countryside! (Except for those UGLY windmills).
Sadly they are all over the place...
I did the Frances this year in April/may from. SJPDP. I’m hooked and if I can get the money together I want to catch the ferry to Santander and then walk the norte until I get to the primitivo, do that and hopefully if I have time go to finisterre this time. Loved your video.
Glad you liked the video. I just finished the Frances first a second time 2 weeks ago. The Norte/Primitivo route is great. I should have a video of the Camjno del Norte up in a few weeks time.
Great, I look forward to seeing it
Is it possible to walk this trail with shorter stages? I am in my 70's and, although fairly fit, I would prefer to take my time and avoid injuries. At the same time, I like quiet and solitary ways. Primativo seems perfect if I can do 15 to 20 km/day. You did a sterling job on the video: thanks for the visual pleasure!
Thank you. One could definitely do it in shorter stages. You can also get your backpack transferred if you're on a more strenuous stage if you need. One or two of the stages are a bit difficult as they are rather steep and long... I met a 85 year old from Madrid who did it, and he carried his backpack. Have a great walk! Buen Camino!!!
You can do it. During my Camino I met a man who was 82 and he planned the route in such a way that he would finish it on his 83rd birthday. He did finish it. 🥃
Hello! Loved your video, I am trying to decide whether to do the camino francis or norte plus Primitivo for my first camino. I plan to do it after I graduate from college. Wondering if you have any thoughts. Giving my best!
Thank you.It depends on how much time you have... but I would do the Frances if you have the time. I gives you more time to experience what a Camino is about and you get to see a lot of Spain. I just finished a 2nd walk along it and loved it once again.
Hi. I did the Norte two years ago. I took the main route avoiding the Primitivo thinking ' Norte is Norte'. It was a great walk. Very different to the Frances. Next time I do it I will go Norte to Primitivo. Having walked the Primitivo last summer I can assure you that it is spectacular
beautiful route, when exactly did you go?
September...
@@rolfscaminos I'm starting my first camino in a month, at the beginning of July. I wonder what the weather will be like because I'm going with an older person
Hi Rolf, thanks for the nice video! Could you give a bit insight into your experiences with leather boots? Aren't they very difficult to clean and dry, when muddy? Thanks and Kind Regards, Rüdiger
They are good boots and very easy to clean. I actually just had them resoled but sadly Zamberlan factory did a dreadful job.
Rolf, thank you for the inspiration along with the guide! What footwear did you use during the course of your pilgrimage?
Thank you. For the Primitivo I recommend boots as there are lots of rocks and downhill. My boots are Zamberlain you can buy them at REI in the US.
Thank you again for your insight! Mmm, am I correct in assuming that the Camino Portuguese consist mostly of non-dirt trails, e.g. tarmac and cobblestone? @@rolfscaminos
Iʻm just beginning to do research on my first Camino and your camera/commentary coverage makes me think this is the route for me... is drinking water and food access pretty easy on these long day stretches? If Iʻm looking for private rooms in Sept is it safer to make lodging reservations ahead of time? Cell coverage available thoughout?
As long as you carry 1 liter of water with you, you should be ok. You probably don't need to reserve too far ahead if you are looking to stay in private rooms as most people are staying in the dorms o this route. Have a great camino!
@@rolfscaminos Thanks so much for your reply Rolf. Your video was so inspiring and makes me want to move ahead with my plans. Safe travels!
Wow 🥃
Which is your favorite Camino so far? And what’s next?
The Via de la Plata was my favorite. I am on the Portugués Central right now...
@@rolfscaminoswow! I’m so jealous. How do you find all this time and make it happen? Your videos are amazing. I did the Camino Frances on a bicycle 🚲 back in 2018. Took me about 10 days.

Having watched your winter vlog before I’ve noticed quality camera work… what camera are you using 360
Thank you. I use a insta360 One R. I like it because it is super compact.
I love your video, great job of showing the entire Primitivo route day by day in one film. I have a question about your Poncho, it looks very practical what brand is it?
Thank you. The poncho is from Decatlon.
Thanks for the quick reply. I live in California, no Decatlon's around here unfortunately, but I will check online. Buen Camino
They do sell online in the US... But slso every bigger city in Spain has one.
@@rolfscaminos Yes, thank you. I purchased one online and am hoping to get a chance to try it out soon.
Buen Camino!
Who is filming this. It seems like you are alone. So many videos I see they say they are walking alone but it seems like someone is vidio this
Some scenes are filmed are filmed with a 360⁰ camera.
great hiking... what is the brand of your poncho / where did you get it? Thanks.
Thank you. The poncho is from Decatlon. They have stores in most all cities in Spain and online. It is a bit heavy but it works very well.
@@rolfscaminos Thanks, will look for it. I like that it has the front zipper.
Fantastic video. I have done 3 Caminos. The C Frances. The C Portuguese (from Porto). And the C Ingles.. Im now researching the C Primitivo. I was interested in the fact that you carried both trail shoes and boots. I used trail shoes for the first time on the Portuguese and Ingles. And it was beneficial. As there is quite a bit of asphalt walking in both. So if taking only one shoe type, I would assume boots would be better for the Primitivo. But yes I understand it is a personal preference. I would be doing it in late April to early May. So assuming once again. The weather may be different to what you experienced.
Thank you.
I am glad you enjoyed it. Trail runners are great but on the Primitivo I definitely would recommend also taking boots as there are very long up and down sections on rough terrain.
Nice footages. Looks like you don't need two sticks. I would throw away one stick to spard one hand for camera or umbrella.
Thank you, But doing that would be a BIG mistake. I prefer the safety of my ankles and bones over my camera or umbrella. ;)
I have not seen people walking I always thought there was so many people on the trail
There were very few pilgrims on the trail 10 to 15 on any given day , it is much less busy than the Frances or Norte.

During what month did you go ?
As the title says...September..;)
Oh, thanks! How did I miss that hehe. Im going this March :)
@@rolfscaminos
I wish you a Buen Camino. It is a beautiful Camino.
Hi! in what dates of september you did the camino?
Second week os September.
What dates were you walking? It’s absolutely beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
I walked it in September
Thank you. I walked it in September.
@@rolfscaminos Which I now see in the title!! Thank you for answering when I completely missed that! :)
thats two week of walking alone... didnt you feel lonely?
If one can still the chatter in the mind, one can realize that we never walk alone. To me, that is the greatest opportunity of doing The Camino.
Never... There are always other pilgrims to talk to. Also when you stay at the albergues you always meet very nice people.
Очень позитивный репортаж 🥰Amazing video and interesting road. There are so many beautiful places - valleys, forests, rivers....and cute animals. Did you need a map? Were there enough signs on the road? How much weight was the backpack? Спасибо за то, что поделились 🙂
Thank you! The Primitivo is very well marked by the usual yellow arrows, but I still always use the Buen Camino app to double check where I am. My backpack weight is about 9 kg.
@@rolfscaminos Thank you 🙂Have you booked your albergue in advance?
I only book in advance if I am going to walk super far...
