Hi, congratulations, you will be really happy to listen to your vintage OG records with a dedicated mono cartridge. The fact is that nowadays (apart from ERC), nobody cuts record with a mono cutting head anymore. Thus recommandation to play it with a stereo cart. Whereas OG were indeed cut mono. Then it depends on the stylus radius you have got (usually 0,7mil and 1mil of inch). The later for vintage 50’s records the first for 60’s and depending on condition too. A G-VG record is better plays -usually- with a larger stylus, less noise and distorsion… enjoy. J from Paris.

A mono record is cut horizontally, while a stereo record is cut twice diagonally with a 90° offset. Or in relation to the hour hand of an analog clock, mono corresponds to a movement between 9 and 3 o'clock, stereo corresponds to the center axis up to 10:30 a.m. and the center axis up to 1:30 p.m. But someone else can calculate the treble reduction using a mono switch. The exact phase position is only maintained if the capacitor/resistor size is identical in the two channels of the Phono Preamplifier. Using only one channel of the phono preamplifier increases the noise.
Yes - and that is why the correct cartridge design, stylus size and stylus shape is important for quality sound reproduction and the prevention of record damage.

Massive congratulations Michael, I know it’s going to sound incredible. The fact it’s a custom cartridge as well is quite amazing. I know ERC do true mono cuts, there are a few others but only a few these days.
I purchased a Miyajima lab Infinity Mono couple years ago, and I am still trying to match my tone arm and turntable to it. Unfortunately, an expensive trial and error.

No luck.
I use a relatively cheap Nagaoka MP110 cartridge with a mild elliptical stylus shape for mono.
In my set-up it sounds fantastic.
No need to get hung up on having a true mono cartridge. What matters most is that you like the sound of the cartridge you use.
I play vintage mono records from the 1950s and 1960s.
We use a Fairchild Mono from the 50s
Also meant to ask, what type of cartridge is it? MM, MI or MC?

This is really interesting. I am perfectly aware that a good real mono system makes a huge difference but have not integrated one into my own setup yet.

I also have a dedicated AR turntable with a mono cartridge for my old Beatles records and other 60s bands cut in mono. But with today's mono lps I use the stereo cartridge, as the information will be in mono, i don't use the mono button on my amp.

Dear Mic , Twenty years ago, after having completed my collection of old stereo record , such as Mercury SR , Rca Living stereo , EMI asd and Columbia sax . I decided to buy some Mono phono cartridge ( and even 20 years ago there were wonderful ones and the technology has moved forward ) . I bought the mono to listen to my collection of jazz mono and some mono classical . The amazement of listening to the beauty of a mono record , with a good mono cartridge was such that after few reflctions I decided to buy back my entire collection of DECCA , RCA Living and Mercury in the Mono version . But over 20 years has passed and now your attention in mono records leave me a bit Disoriented . I must say that some mono record requires a correct Equalization curve. and you need a phono preamp that is up to the task . My humble advice at this point is to allow you to listen to the beauty of some 78s by bix Beiderbecke or Duke Ellington with a new mono 78 cartrdrige . I doubt what I wrote , you didn't know 20 years ago but I congratulate for your interesting Channel .

I look forward to hearing about your journey in mono. I think you will find out quickly that your mono albums from Sam Records/ERC/AP will sound superior with your mono cartridge versus your stereo cartridge. They don't need to be early mono records to appreciate the difference. I use a Miyajima 0.7 mil Infinity Mono and it is superior to my stereo Lyra Etna (which cost 3x as much) on mono albums of any age. I'm interested what you hear. I previously had a Lyra Kleos mono cart and I prefer the Miyajima for mono recordings. Here's what Miyajima recommends for stylus shape/size:
0.7mil is suitable for reissue monaural LP and a monaural LP of after 1960.
1.0mil is suitable for the monaural LP of a deep groove of the first press of the 1950s.
However, both styli can trace the monaural LP of all generations without a problem.
When you listen to the monaural LP of all generations, we recommend 0.7mil.
When you listen to a monaural LP of the first press of the 1950s mainly, we recommend 1.0mil.
Micheal- the mono records shifted in the records produced in the ‘50’s, 60’s, and the current mono reissues.

Fascinating discussion on the mono cuts. I’d love to know more about modern mono vs past. Is the claim simply “vintage mono sounds better with a mono cart because they were cut with a mono cart?” Which doesn’t necessarily mean they sound better or worse than modern mono cuts… or is it that “vintage mono played back on a mono cart sounds better than modern mono played back on a stereo cart?”
I wonder how many people are playing modern mono with mono carts or switches and saying it makes an improvement? Can it?
Can’t wait for some shootouts! The OG Blue Train Mono vs the Tone Poet Mono would be cool. Of course I don’t have a Blue Train OG, and I’m perfectly happy with the TP, but I’d be very curious to get into the differences. Volker is spot on about the complete balance of sound, thats what a good mix is about, & it should be what it’s all about for the listening.
Jöööö es ist geschafft dein Mono Tonabnehmer ist endlich da. Sehr cool. Ich bin sehr gespannt auf die klangliche Beschreibung. Aber gerade Volker mit seiner riesigen Sammlung an alten Blues Platten, da sind doch mit Sicherheit jede Menge Monos dabei, da ist ein zweiter Arm doch mega.
Aber 2 Arme für Stereo, da bin ich ganz bei Volker, das bringt es nicht. Wer das braucht, hat nur in puncto Tonabnehmer noch keinen stabilen Geschmack entwickelt, dabei ist es doch so einfach, die Frage ist doch nur EMT oder SPU, den Rest braucht man doch auf lange Sicht sowieso nicht ;-) *Triggeralarm* ^^
Somit also doch wiederum zwei Tonarme. Einen fürs EMT und den anderen fürs SPU. 😅😅😅
@@Dodo_Bequem ne wenn du mit beiden mal ein paar Monate gehört hast und der Reiz des neuen weg ist, wirst du dich automatisch für eins entscheiden und das andere liegt nur noch rum. Alle die ich kenne, die die Auswahl hatten, hören mit dem einen und schätzen das andere, egal ob man selbst das EMT oder das SPU bevorzugt.

Conical (round) stylus shapes are safer for mono and styrene records. I’m interested in hearing more about the stylus’s size and the history of record cutting.

As far as i know…some Classic Records from the 90ies have a dedicated mono cut….and do you if the rumor is true: its not a good idea to play a early mono record (with a mono cut, not the new ones) with a stereo cartridge (for the needle and the record - both can wear out more because they are not actually made for each other…)?

Hello Michael, thanks for the video. I have a couple of mono modern records, and none from the past. I as thinking of setuping a alternative turntable with a mono cart for them, can you make some tests and give us some feedback if the modern monos have any sonic advantage on mono carts. Thank you
They do benefit. The stereo cart is playing the noise from the vertical axis of the groove, whereas a mono cart doesn’t. Even a mono switch cuts out a lot of noise when using a stereo cart
These two guys don’t seem to be aware that you can get mono carts with different stylus sizes. Early mono LPs are made for 1.0mil size and approx post-1967 LPs are made for 0.7mil size styli, which is the standard for stereo LPs too. Therefore, a stereo cart and a mono cart made for post-1967 LPs will have the identical stylus diameter.

Hintergrundinfo:
Es gibt drei Rillenbreiten und dazugehörige Nadeldurchmesser und Nadelgeometrie:
120µ Rille : 75µ Nadel... für Schellack (M)
60µ Rille : 25µ Nadel... von 1948 bis 1965 (M)
40µ Rille : 13µ Nadel... seit 1958 (S, M)
1. es macht technisch gesehen Sinn Mono LPs mit Monosystemen abzutasten, da es bei Verwendung eines Stereoabtasters aufgrund von Phasenunterschieden in den beiden Kanälen zu Auslöschungen kommen kann
2. Monoabtaster mit 25µ Nadel werden mit einer höheren Auflagekraft betrieben, daher wird ein schwerer Tonarm genommen
3. aufgrund der geringeren Auflagekraft für Stereo ergibt sich eine eigene Arm/Abtaster Kombi
4. was macht man mit Monoschnitt in Rillenbreite 40µ...die LP könnte für "alte Aufnahmen" mit dem Stereo Tonabnehmer bei Verwendung beider Kanäle (R, L) mit den unter 1. aufgeführten Einschränkungen abgetastet werden.... oder mit dem herkömlichen Stereo Tonabnehmer bei Verwendung nur eines Kanales (Nachteil Musik läuft nur auf dem rechten/linken Lautsprecher)...oder auch dafür einen eigenen Mono Tonabnehmer mit 13µ Nadel verwenden.
Neuere Mono Aufnahmen wurden kompatibel für Srereotonabnehmer geschnitten und können damit auch abgetastet werden.
Erschwerend kommt leider hinzu, daß es lange Zeit keine einheitliche Schneidekennlinie gab, RIAA kam zwar mit Einführung der
Stereoplatte auf, aber gerade in Europa wurden noch lange Zeit davon abweichende Kennlinien (LP, NAB, AES und deren
Kombinationen für TT und HT) verwendet, was auch entsprechend der Phono-Vorverstärker entzerren können sollte.
Die Frage bei historischen Platten vor dem Abspielen heisst also, welche Rillenbreite, Kennlinie und Geschwindigkeit (33, 45, 78)
liegt vor.
Es geht abschliessend mMn also darum, eine historische Mono Aufnahme in Mono mit dem passenden System abzutasten. First
press liegt ggf. in 60µ Rillenbreite und Kennlinie XYZ vor und das Reissue in 60µ bzw. 40µ Rillenbreite mit vmtl. RIAA Kennlinie. Da Stereo ein räumlicheren Eindruck vermitteln kann, macht es heutzutage wenig Sinn aktuelle Produktionen in Mono anzufertigen.
Dir erstmal viel Spass mit dem zusätzlichen System, mit dem du den Sound deiner Oldis richtig zur Geltung bringen kannst.

Unfortunately spending a €100.000 on only the Reference Series for an amp, The Record Player, Speakers and wiring is something I cannot justify to myself and my family in this day and age and with two sons studying.
And as beautiful as it might sound I wonder what I hear additionally that warrants spending €70.000 more than I did now.
This is ofcourse personal but isn’t it also a little prestigious for people to buy equipment at this price? As I seriously wonder, what additional fidelity warrants this money?
And please understand, as English is not my native tongue, I am NOT judging, I am just curious.
Prima. Schade, dass es keine Infos und Bilder über Michaels neuen Mono-Abtaster gibt. Ich nutze Miyajimas Zero Mono, ein Ortofon SPU Mono und ein Audiotechnica AT 33 Mono plus Miyajima Kotetu Mono. Fast zu viele für 70 Mono-Lps...
Meine Empfehlung ! Eine EMT Mono Tondose...Und hört auch 'mal eine Platte über so eine gut gewartete EMT Maschine, auch das zugehörige ( Press Original Band ) auf einer amtlichen Studiomaschine, erst dann kann überhaupt eine Aussge getroffen werden...Bei Motorradfahren sind das "Benzingespräche" Aber gutes Video an Leute die ( wie meine Frau immer sagt ) das Hemd "hinten zuknöpft bekommen " Sorry, ihr wißt schon wie es gemeint ist...
Modern cutter head geometry is not the same as the old 50's/60's cutter head geometry so a Mono record cut after that period doesn't benefit in the same way when using a Mono cartridge. If you have a lot of old Jazz records and Beatles records and want to hear them as heard in the early period, buy a Mono cartridge with a period correct stylus.
if you want to do it right for the optimal result you have to listen old mono cuts on a one channel amplifier and one speaker.
