I don't mind Eggman being a comedic villain, but I don't want it to be overdone to the point where he comes across as a push over like in Boom. I think the comedy could come from Eggmans overblown ego. Eggman can have serious and threatening moments, but when his plans backfire, he releases his anger on Orbot and Cubot

@Abrilla 2 M I would like it if they introduced an alternate universe version of a roboticized SATAM Robotnik who is incredibly more evil itteration of regular Eggman, has the SATAM design and voice and is the same level of threat that Mephiles and Chaos were. I think boom worked because, at least in the TV show, there was rarely any serious episodes. The real problem is writers wanting both cakes. Yes, Eggman can be funny, but if he's comedic relief he can't be take seriously. (Should be mentioned though, Eggman also won't work as an entirely serious threat. As a more "relatable" villain, he can't be down to earth if he's a ruthless murderer)

I'll give Forces credit for one thing: It was the first time in a long while where he felt like a guy with a plan. He had no less than two back-up plans, another final robot inside his final robot (even if it was just a rehash) and it's even implied he had preparations in case Infinite betrayed him. They may have heavily underutilized the concept of him ruling the world, but at least he showed some competency and foresight. I want more of that in the future.

@《MH MB1》 PuffyBuffy25 They didn't include one since Forces was trying too hard to push some "war is hell" post-apocalypse to the point where Eggman didn't get to show he remade Whatever The The Planet Is Called in his image. Even the Game Gear Sonics did better on this (Mecha Green Hill Zone).
Forces was just a bad idea to begin with. An attempt to force Western interpretations of Sonic through the lens of Canon Sonic. Hence shoving Knuckles and Co. in The Resistance (an obvious attempt to shoehorn a Freedom Fighters analogue even though it doesn't fit any of the core characters).

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I think Eggman was written well in Lost World. He took over the Zeti and had something that could suck the life out of the world below him. He even had a mech (which was the Colors final boss) that used that energy. He also threated to destroy everything the Zeti knew and loved and wanted to make them suffer. Again, in my opinion, Lost World has the best story of the modern Sonic games.

I do want to say that I really liked his first delivery in Sonic 06, when he approached Elise with all of his robots he looked VERY menacing, he didn't talk very loudly and sounded very calm and collected.
but when Sonic appeared he was very frustrated and aggressive with him saying "Not that irritating hedgehog again!" and immediately make all systems go full power on Sonic.

This is why I like him in the movie when portrayed by Jim Carrey. He did an amazing job making him a serious threat to Sonic and those around him, but still have him being intelligent, egotistical, and goofy at times throughout.
He belittles the CO at the ballpark and taking command with his ego-infused genius, while still making an occasional joke or two. He dances to music and holograms while he's studying one of Sonic's quills and trying to learn of the energy within to use for his robots. He had a robotic vehicle that kept pursuing Sonic no matter how much the blue hedgehog knocked it down, but still got more frustrated the more it happened, (and to be fair, the bomb did technically harm Sonic, even if it didn't kill him.)

One thing I like about Eggman is that he's ironically the least human character in the franchise. He puts living creatures into slave robots, builds chemical plants and laboratories that pollute the air and water, and he's willing to destroy the planet and build whatever is left on top of it. He doesn't care about life, something Sonic swore to protect. It's something that I love that the movie mentioned. I think it's one thing that made SA2 so impactful. Despite how evil Dr. Eggman might seem, even he believes that he's the hero, and that was shown with how he admired his grandfather. No one believes their doing the wrong thing, and that's one of the messages SA2 gave us.
I guess I'm still against Dr. Eggman always being treated as a side villain instead of the main course. Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 did a great job handling him as a threatening villain, while introducing a newer more powerful foes, but after, it really did feel cliche, and overused. I do agree that he was also poorly handled though. The more cliche it is, the more the newer foe loses that impact. It makes them look boring and stale. I just don't want them to do it all the time, and prefer that they can mix it up once and a while.

I've always loved Eggman as a villain from how they could take someone so comical in appearance and in personality, yet still make him feel like a real threat - even intimidating in some portrayals. I also really like that hint humanity he shows in SA2 through his admiration of his grandfather - the one person he holds above even himself (and I really hope they keep it in and explore this in the movie franchise)
To me, the best depiction of Eggman would be a combination of the Cold & Calculating rendition of him in SA2 with the Humor & Energy of his Unleashed portrayal. But the video brought to mind that a major issue with Eggman's current portrayal is having minions/sidekicks that constantly tell him (and the audience) how foolish & incompetent he is. Fortunately, they seemed to have learned from that for Forces; so let's hope they learn from the other mistakes too for the next game.

I wouldn't say Shadow and 06 got him wrong, besides his physical redesign in 06. He still seemed in-character in those games, esp in Shadow.
In Heroes, most of the missions make sense, besides the casino and crab ones. He wants the Chaotic to rescue Chao because he knows Metal Sonic will be after them to copy Chaos' biodata, he wants them to free Metropolis because that's where Metal's getting energy from, and the other missions involve weakening Metal's forces or getting closer to the doc.
As for Unleashed, he acts more goofy than in the adventures but he still feels like a threat, and he still proves himself one. And most importantly, he doesn't deviate from the type of character he's meant to be. That is, the type to fuck the Earth for his own ambitions. I mean, he literally devastates the Earth and gives zero fucks about the consequences, all just for a rich source of energy.

I love him in the comics, a great mix of egotistical, goofy, and threatening, he dedicated an entire car in his bullet train to a Custom foosball table, or before the genesis wave he watched an abandoned project almost kill sonic, but because it wasn’t him who’s killing sonic he just whips up a little robot to destroy the abandoned project in like a minute, saving sonic just so he would have the pleasure of killing him
And in the IDW comics he doesn’t fail because he’s an idiot, he fails because of his ego, he’s to brilliant for his own good, the metal virus worked, it had the freedom fighters on their last legs, the problem was his own ego got the better of him, it was to much for even him to control, admittedly this is a common motive for Eggman, he likes to test the limits of his brilliance without thinking about the repercussions, that’s why he’s always getting bitched by gods of destruction, he things so highly of himself “usually with good reason” that he refuses to see or admit when he’s out of depth

I hope that one day Dr. Eggman can be once again more competent in the new games.
By being competent, I mean more predictable. It’s been a while we didn’t see Eggman actually a genius on something else than his machines, he could at least be more strategic on building his robots, especially the one who’re programmed to beat Sonic, I mean, he knows the hedgehog for a really long time, he could at least analyze him like every evil genius can do, then knows his weaknesses and his flaws, (so we could have challenging bosses). Even though he looks like a round shaped egg, he is still charismatic, but it seems that the games don’t show this side anymore and no one of us takes him seriously actually, except Sonic, but NOT that seriously… Sonic sees Eggman has a treat, but has a comical threat, he is so cocky that he and we just don’t take him seriously, so he could gave him the nicknames of Egghead or Baldy Mcnosehair especially in the new games, but Sonic Unleashed proves us the contrary, by trapping Super Sonic in a magnetic high energy shield that separate him from the Chaos Emeralds. In conclusion, Eggman should be writed as the predictable, charismatic and evil mastermind guy. Sometimes, I wish that he could excels the ones with great power on his side who tries to betray him, so they could be at Eggman mercy, Eggman is well-knowed to be one of the biggest mastermind in the video game universe, cause he’s the Eggman, that’s what he is.

Hwan Niggles Yes, but it’s not enough... I mean Eggman can’t always relying on the same machines to beat the same enemy, look at the Death Egg Robot, first we thought it was impressive, since Sonic doesn’t have any rings, ( I don’t tell you how it was a pain in the butt, when I saw it in Sonic 4), but later on, it became overrated if you tell me. Or the Egg Dragoon, I mean that beast as cool design, but I feel it could be too used. The Egg Dragoon has such effective tools, like a giant Gatling gun that could shoot fireballs who can transform into six pipe like cannons who can shoots rays of fire, an arm that could create a wave of electricity in one swing and shoot infinite giant drills on the ground, feet’s that could shoot ice or making freezing wave and the ability that could separate himself so an A.I could take over a part of the mech, so the mech can do on his own. If he wanted, Eggman could even equipped him with rocket launchers and grappling hook like we saw in the intro of Unleashed. We even had the Egg Storm or the Robot Carnival, robots who are a pain in the ass! They have a good resistance and a longer endurance, why Eggman can’t make his army troops like that? Sonic could last for 30 minutes?

Canon Eggman is a manchild who wants to mechanize the world who does what he does since he's too self-centered and/or too out-of-touch with reality to realize the harm he's doing. At the same time, he appreciates Sonic as a good rival among other admirable qualities. He's a villainous Willy Wonka. Not Hitler or Dr. Weil. And that's fine. It gives him dimensions that villains like Mephiles and SatAM's Julian don't have (no one has told what depth Mephiles has).

He’s being incredibly goofy and mocked CONSTANTLY by everyone around him, and yet he manages to cause a LOT of destruction, like breaking the entire world into pieces if only JUST to unleash an eldritch abomination, building Eggmanland (which a lot of Sonic fans will tell you, might be the hardest level in the franchise), he captured an entire race of aliens, managed to capture PLANETS, had a plan that literally only failed because of luck, threatened time and space, built a device that could suck energy from the world which also includes energy from living beings, and conquered 99% of the world (even if it honestly doesn’t feel like that most of the time, like you said). Plus, you can argue that he’s like this after going insane from losing to Sonic so many times. And I really love hearing Mike Pollock voicing him.

@@mr.vorrnyvorrn2516 Okay? And... What is the random assortment of series that you listed supposed to imply? I'm going off a limb and assuming that you're trying to discredit my appreciation of the characterization given to the movie's Eggman with childish programs, but from what I know, Dora and Loud House have nothing in common...? Unless you're just trying to be insulting, I don't see any major criticism here. Paramount Eggman is given a backstory that establishes him as a character outside of his relationship to Sonic. He's an insecure man who was driven into an inferiority complex, so now he feels the need to diminish others around him using his intellect and mechanical prowess, something clearly evident by his treatment of other military personnel and Tom Wachowski. When he's confronted with someone that he cannot make feel inferior with his intelligence, he panics and begins to break, peeling away at the layers of confidence and boastfulness to reveal an increasingly insane man who only desires to feel superior, to squash others under his foot for his petty desires. That's what I appreciate of him, it's a credible villain because not only are his motivations reasonable and understandable, they are also deeply realistic, to the point that you'll find many people around you who feel the very same way as this portrayal of Eggman. Now that I've clarified my image of Paramount's depiction of Eggman, would you please do the same with what you describe as "2006 Eggman"? Because even though you try to bring your point up with the association with what I assume are mature, complex series with nuanced antagonists, I can't see the connection with the Eggman shown in Sonic '06, as in that game his scheme follows a fairly standard progression of "kidnap girl, get Chaos Emeralds" with no major motivation shown or implied to exist for him. He's not planning to erase Sonic from reality because he's become convinced that it's the only way to make sure he never interferes with his plans - that's Mephiles' thing. He doesn't have much nuance or development to his actions, except near the end of the game where he directs all of Sonic's friends to the Chaos Emeralds, but at that point it's just a choice of self-preservation, if he doesn't do it he fucking dies. Therefore, I can't see Sonic '06 Eggman as a complex or nuanced character, but I'd like to see your perspective on him to see if it can be somewhat redeemed in my eyes.

King Dedede isn't a standard reoccuring villain, he's a villain in only three main series games Dreamland 1, Super Star and it's remake Super Star Ultra.
In the vast majority of games, when he's a boss it's only because he's controlled by the true villain (Dark Matter, Taranza, Jamba Hearts) or he has an ulterior moral motive for doing what he does (Kirby's Adventure.)
Also King Dedede does have some depth, not a ton but in Dreamland 1 he's an incredibly greedy character who steals all the food from the inhabitants of Dreamland but in Adventure he steals and shatters the Star Rod into multiple pieces to prevent Nightmare from invading other people's dreams.
In 64, Return to Dreamland and Star Allies, he helps Kirby to stop the real villain (once he is no longer under the control of Dark Matter and the Jamba Hearts in the first and last games mentioned here.)
His description in the Guest Star mode of Star Allies literally states “Kirby's first rival, from Kirby's Dream Land, *wants to clean up his image, so he's set off to save his people.* There's no stopping this self-made king, so watch out, world!”'
So uh yeah, I just wanted to correct you there, King Dedede isn't a villain. Thank you for reading if you did, I guess

    Counterargument:
Heroes: He didn't have control of anything, that was Metal Sonic.
Shadow: While he could've had more screentime, the game was largely about Shadow. And the android thing could've been a combination of trying to trick Shadow (matrix) and/or thinking it was just a capable android (Lava). The events are loosely connected in that game.
2006: I actually like this portrayal due to him acting more refined and cunning compared to most other portrayals. It could also be argued he was trying to get information from Elise, or just didn't have the right tools yet. And it is the portrayal that fits Mike Pollock the best for me with his Eggman.
Unleashed: One could argue that his overambition got the better of him there with sillier moments to better resemble the more lighthearted tone. That, and I just like the whole "it's part of the big picture response" when asked about accidently throwing Sonic out with the Emeralds, if only because the response was the most unironic he could've made it while knowing full well it was an accident.

I'd like to raise some defenses for Eggman in the later games.
Unleashed: He makes Eggmanland and he's not only responsible for awakening Dark Gaia but also for amassing him into a more stabilized form.
Colours: Pulling off that amusement park is a big deal in the first place.
Generations: It's a little hard to understand, but Modern Eggman was in control of the Time Eater the all along. Classic Eggman was kidnapped by his modern counterpart at the Death Egg, and he was planning on destroying Sonic with the Egg Dragoon but still had the Time Eater as backup.
Lost World: Yeah ok he kinda sucks in this game, but he does have fantastic moments like the scene in Frozen Factory.
Forces: He himself is never shown to be weak in this game and is always a step ahead of the heroes, but he also subverted the cliche of him being supplanted as the Final Boss by the next random God Monster, by instead betraying the God Monster.
Modern saga: From Unleashed to Generations there's a singular plotline developing with Eggman as he gets more and more unhinged after each defeat, and he's always written with some of the most ridiculous plot armour I've ever seen. After Generations he was stuck in a timeless void and managed to get out before Lost World even started.

Personally, Eggman has always been villain that you're not supposed to take terribly seriously. He made a Death Star parody and Wile E. Cayote-esque devices in the classic games, he constantly got fucked over by his own plans in the Adventure games, got one-upped by Metal Sonic in Heroes, was basically irrelevant in Shadow, incompetent in 06, got fucked over again by another god in Unleashed, only lost in Colors because of a fluke that Sonic didn't even intend to happen, and was sidelined in both Lost World and Forces, the latter of which he had actually taken over the world, but most of the plot's attention went to Infinite for some reason.
Eggman's appeal to me isn't that he's the "the most threatening villain in the franchise", he's an egomaniac who comes up with ridiculous solutions to simple problems and sticks giant mustaches on space stations. He's a fun villain, that’s part of why people like his characterization in Colors and Boom, he’s fun, but can be threatening when the plot needs him to be.
All that and he's still the most likable character in the franchise.

Ok so hear me out. In the Sonic X anime there’s a scene where Eggman realizes that he’s not from Mobius but was actually born on Earth. It’s never explained how he got to Mobius or how long he’s been there, but he knows/ remembers enough that learning about Dr. Gerald Robotnick and Shadow makes him realize he’s not from Mobius. And that got me thinking. What if the reason Eggman wants to conquer the world is because when he arrived on Mobius, he was scared and confused. Humans are used to living in big cities where they can be accommodated and kept safe from the elements. So the wild untamed nature of Sonic’s world was threatening to him. And he set out to make the place habitable by making it more like the world he was from, even if he couldn’t exactly remember what it was like. I’m not necessarily saying Eggman is the victim, since he clearly is aware of what he’s doing and that it’s wrong/ malicious. But this could serve to give him some motivation outside of, “evil guy who wants to conquer the world for reasons”
