- Making a packed lunch for your children to take to school is a chore performed by parents around the world.
But in Japan, it is not just the taste and healthiness of the meal that is important - but how it looks.

Anything my mom makes for me is special:)
+Jack Tucker Hahaha.. replied to the wrong comment..
and how old are you?
when you're a kid, your opinion is different lol
My mother would have kicked my butt had I demanded something like this.
nir913 Yep, mine would have said, "Eat what you have and be glad you even have that!"
Cade F Thank you!! Grammar Nazi!!

@F. Santos same!!!
Geez, my parents banged a sandwich in a sack and said "here you go".
Maybe that's why your economy wasn't as shitty as Japan now.
Conservatives Triggered cooking home is best way to save money. I cook lunch every single day for me and my husband. Sandwich can be costly if you wanna put salami and ham.
jumpmomongaable Cooking home would be a bad idea. Apart from how hard it is to cook an entire home. It's also pretty expensive.
jumpmomongaable
+Autumn Shag If the preson who made the original comment is from America then your comment doesn't match up considering Japan is $10.46 Trillion in debt and we're (sadly but sometimes a proud Americans) are $19.5 trillion in debt. If they're from anywhere else well then good for them.
That lady is a true artist
you can buy all the stuff to make this at home from Daiso Japanese $ store.
Cute kids deserve cute bento-box lunches! Btw, these are the healthiest and best-fed kids in the world. These children will grow up to be the healthiest adults in the world too with the longest life-spans of any country although with none of the western-style health issues or complications like obesity, diabetes, arthritis, heart disease and/or cancer, etc. Didya hear that Michelle Obama??
Yeah. The food's healthy and doesnt look like a pile of shit!
My mom would throw an old orange and a stale bread bologna sandwich into a paper bag, knot that shit up and toss it in the fridge the night before.
I want a Japanese mom to make my lunch!
I still love and want my mom, just not for lunch making!
=)

My mom used to leave me little lunch box pre written notes and a pack of candy when she made my "tin foiled sandwich" and my broken Pringles and juice box and my oxidized sliced apples and it was still delicious and made me feel special because most kids ate school lunches and my mom took the time out to prepare a lunch for me and my sisters with her being an engineer and my dad being a deployed military personnel I know she dealt with a lot of stress but still showed us love .
Lori Anne my mom would always put in special little notes in mine and my brothers lunch. One day she forgot and I had a really bad panic attack cuz at the time I had separation anxiety I was 5-6 years old. She rushed over and spent the lunch with me to make up for it. Sadly I lost her 2 years ago but ur comment reminded me of this memory so thank you!😊
I just love how you are able to see the love your mother showed you and how you appreciate her smallest of details in showing it. You and your mother are gems!
omg I remember when my mom used to put notes in my lunch box. it was fun
amazing, I can't imagine the time spent preparing lunch daily. what an act of love to give your children, a lifetime memory.
I just love Japanese people They are so beautiful and creative.
agree.
Julie Garbs and civilized and thoughtful
why all the negative comments? I grew up in Australia with a Japanese mum. Asian food is very displeasing to look at as a picky child. its not a waste of time to prepare food visually. come on restaurants do it and this is just a way to entice children to eat. I loved my mum molding rice for me and if it fell apart (no sticky rice in Aust in 80-90s) I would get extremely upset. I wanted a round ball on my plate! 😂 I remember all the vegetables were cut into flowers but come teen years I just ate whatever and didn't care anymore
my mum and aunty would have competition at each others house. who could make the best fruit and vegetable flowers 😂 my aunty always won but my mums food always tasted better 😂
+Sarah Joy they must be creative! 😂😂
they're not nega comments tho. they r just telling how jealous they r on how japanesse prep bento.
There is a huge difference between spending a couple of minutes to garnish a meal so it looks nice, and standing up at 4 a.m. to create an oversophisticated Michael Jackson bento for a toddler just to impress the other toddlers' mothers.
Senga Sengana She says it's fun though, so who are you to judge? I suppose it's a form of art to her and she doesn't mind spending a couple of hours to make Michael Jackson's face. I think the moms in her class are only learning more basic designs.
-What are you eating?
-Obama.
This is the best comment
yes 😂
lol
oh rearry? I'm eating mikeru jakuson!
K-ra, you made smire hehehe.
Man japanese people are just so amazing! I have huge respect for their culture.
Itadakimas!
I like Japan.
Me too
Some of these designs are very complicated. I used to make the simple ones when our son was in grade school. His friends were always very excited to see what he got at lunch time. I missed those days.
Sourdough Girl not really all u need is a cookie cutter and but the food u want in it
I’ve homeschooled since kindergarten and my son is in 8th grade. I wanted a prep before college. The school setting. I love packing his lunch! I was put a little gum or suckers for his friends at his table. I can’t do anything to fun. But his friends all envy his lunches. I didn’t have the luxury of a packed lunch. School lunch was all I could have and it was awful! In grade school I had packed middle and high school purchases. I always loved the packed lunches!
Have more babies or make bento for your furry children
MzClementine sometimes for field trips my mom packs extra treats for friends i might hang out with similar to how you do it, but then I end up not being able to be with any of them so I eat the treats myself so I feel better lol.
the kids are incredibly cute !!
My parents didn't even had time to make food, I always bought myself something at school 😂
hahahaha me too
Oh that's so sad
I like this video very much czcams.com/video/QRYYEHYa5Ac/video.html
same lol my parents didn't have time in the morning at all
Just Beautiful Having the Whole Grand Piano for lunch.
watching all these videos on Japan I've come to the conclusion that Japan is a joy joy land
Here in india, we have a wholesome lunch. Its usually rice with a curry (usually with 2 or 3 veggies or chicken/mutton) another steamed or cooked vegetable. I think i dare say, that's enough a healthy food for kids or adults alike.
true that , and it certainly doesn't take two hours to prepare lol
Sara Enayath it doesn't take that long with prectice but even if it takes two hrs then what? least we can do for our body is to nurture it with best healthy home cooked food after all we work so hard ultimately for servival and good food is first step to it in long run
Hameed Azar Geez , I get excited if it's just Pizza day!!!.. (New York) school lunches.😒
Hameed Azar must be very smelly
Don't you mould it into the shape of Michael Jackson though 😆
oh my god... their English is amazing... better than most Americans whose native language is English.
Lol no one in America would...unless you are originally from Japan. I have a Japanese friend who's been in the U.S. for a few years and she does these elaborate works of art for her daughter's lunch every day.
I like this video very much czcams.com/video/QRYYEHYa5Ac/video.html
where tf did you get that from?
I don't think their english ability is typical. Plenty of them can't speak english despite having studied it in high school.
Lol true we use words that aren't even real English
Mom's showing their love.
For parents to go to that much trouble in preparing a lunch is a huge indication of how much children are loved in Japan
Is anyone else jealous of the easy graceful way these kids use chopsticks? ...No? Just me? OK then... :(
japanese kids are the only kind of kids that i see cute cause they are educaded.
*educated
Daniel Mora such irony 😂😂
oh my god, those kids are so adorable!
My mom would leave loving and encouraging notes in our lunches. Sometimes candy. Cookies or fruit were staples, along with a sandwich and a drink. She was the best mom ever, and I miss her every day.
Tomomi is an artist
these little lunches are so creative I see it on Instagram all the time👌
Great Parents
Miss Yayoi Uemura's accent is excellent :-)
I laughed reading some comments here. It does not take more than 3mins to shape a totoro or hello kitty rice. All you need is a piece of cling film, a stamp cutter which you can cut the seaweed into circles for the eyes. You can snip few slices of tomato or radish or any favourite vegetables. Rice can be cooked beforehand in a rice cooker, omelette can be fried while waiting for your child to get ready for school and sausage can be cut into octopus shapes and fry for 3-4mins.
I cook breakfast and prepare lunchbox for my husband on a daily basis. An extra 5-10mins early in the morning is nothing compared to £5 per meal if he spend for lunch. At the end of the month, we saved a lot. What I prepared are not bento but love.. hehe..
I've got a hello kitty egg mold and its fantastic, it works so well - even the ribbon imprints. It works with rice too
I have seen someone work so hard for lunch
Yeah that's great and all but I'm not getting up at three in the morning to make no one's lunch for two hours
"this child obviously has an artistic mother" well father's make packed lunches too
Japanese moms are super moms They do all the house work, work jobs, and have time to do this its really amazing
moms in japan is boss if they can do that my mom work far away and im with my dad now im sad. can somebody something im going to crie
cries in the corner like the lone i am
+Aleesya Az Zahra dont juge my spelling im still a kid ok
***** work
So much effort put in by Japan moms. Awesome.
They must have a lot of patience to make that
haha, yup, they are japanese XD
Emily &Daisy once you learn it becomes second nature. no harder than preparing any other meal
I suspect that you don't do a portrait every day. It might be Michael Jackson or Barack Obama once or twice a year, and Totoro and Hello Kitty and a panda the rest of the year.
In the US of course we'd have to include the occasional eagle, gun, Mickey Mouse, and pot leaf.
Those Japanese! They are so creative and the Japanese housewife is dedicated to making good food for her family. So awesome - those were works of art.
Absolutely brilliant.
1:24 little boy said "What is he doing???" "What is he saying???" "I have no idea what he is talking about!!".
So cute( ´∀`)b
that major talent and devotion.
she said herself
"the expectations are high, and she feels pressure.."
as adorable as that looks. it good to get used to the simple good old fashion way.. jus a carrot and sandwich n a fruit.. they might end up not knowing how to eat those things later on in life
aww...i don't know if the contents of the bento box or the owners of it are cuter!
it's cuter when the cute kids eat the cute food :3
simply adorable
awww i love the little asian children
then let's make them. you and me
***** haha
Im a little Asian kid well not a kid I live in in the U.S.A
+Lina mziwna stalker
1:09 kid is all "this guy better not touch my back."
Look at them eating they are so cute and adorable so proud of their parents feeding them right it's so cute and really just amazing the little lunchboxes
japanese kids r so so cute...
they are so tiny and cute 😢❤
These kids mothers have good skills on lunch box 😘
It''s wonderful for the kids to eat that kind of food, and to have mothers interested in what their children are going to eat. Lunchboxes are really important, but not everybody takes that into account.
Shit it's fucking cute
Are you Japanese?
+Orochi Samurai Yes. They are. YOU cracked me up by your description. ( f.....ing cute. ) lol
Ikr? But they are cute!
i want to be japanese
lala lue weaboo?
+Alex S, use proper grammar!
L M after watching all this..yeah me too..
Me too hhhhh
yeah imagine seeing these bento as the norm. I would want to be a mom to a young kid lol
lmao i used to bring two biscuits to school and that was it
My mom made me PB&J every single day, and I was lucky if it wasnt smashed by the time lunch period rolled around. I WANTED SMILING PANDAS!!!!! WTF!!!!!! AHHHHH GOD!!!!!
+The Milkman If it wasn't smashed, it wasn't right.
+The Milkman I had the same thing. I developed adult-onset food allergies in college and I am now highly allergic to peanuts! One day I am fine the next my tongue has swelled out of my mouth and I can't breath and have to be rushed to the ER after eating PB pretzels. Thanks US obsession with PB&J. :/
+The Milkman Be grateful, what part about character shaped foods will change your life? i rather eat a peanut and jelly sandwhich instead of being poor.
Hahaha I used to get bakery sammies I'm so jelly
if i knew what bentos were when I was little i bet I'd have been the coolest kid. at least i can make one in high school and pretend I'm 😎
I love bento boxes!!!! All of my kids take them to school everyday, including the high schoolers. None of them eat sandwiches. We live on soups, salads, fruits...hot lunches are a must!!!! Use thermos type containers to keep them warm.
L MG same here! My kids take them too and will every day. I can't stand the junk that the schools serve students. Totally agree with the Thermos
L MG I'm from Philippines i live in US now,i always prepared my kids lunch my kids don't like food in school
they are so lucky
Kids on those age often very difficult to eat. A cute bento is actually a great idea.
There is no way in hell you will find an American mother doing that every day for lunch for their kids.
Brothersall Ikr!? Especially when it takes 2hrs to make! I wonder how much time these moms actually spend with their children :/
Brothersall it's common to be a stay at home mum. so your time is for the children and house. it's even more exhausting than going to work out.
I do! I don't make faces because I don't have those types of skills but my girls take Bento every day. Yes, even in America lol
I'm going to do this for my kids and I'm an American. I'm teaching myself too.
unless they're japanese
He's just lurking over their food lol
The kids are soo cute!!
Very serious and important news story
Thats so clever n kids loved it
So cute.
food has always been one of my essentials
Just came to watch the super cute japanese kids ^^
Japanese mothers are truly professional in the art of child raising and motherhood.
damm their parents are artists
wow.. i wish i was born in japanese family and had those cute and amazing bentos for lunch..
**sigh** 😧
I cracked when I was supposed to be listening to the song thingy but in the end it ended XD
*the day before filming* teacher: kids, go home and tell ur parents to prepare a good lunchbox.
very creative ! and very nutritious too .
If my mom made my lunches like that when I was a kid, I wouldn't have been able to eat them cause their too cute to eat!
Omg that’s amazing! I still remember my dad packing me soggy bologna sandwiches. Sometimes he’d try and cut them into shapes if he was feeling a little extra 🤦♀️🤣
But here in America your lucky if your sandwich is not smashed by lunch time😂 In Japan tho, your lucky if your mom puts your favorite anime character in your bento box.
Their mother are so creative
I want to make these for my kids when I have them OuO
Beautiful lunchboxes. I have mom guilt now.But two hours... I guess we spend 5-10 minutes. I make a lunch-schedule every Sunday. We wake up read it & they put it in their lunch box themselves. When they were little & did not know how to read,I would make a schedule with pictures. Done!!!!!
Don't have mom guilt! Two hours spent interacting with your child are much more valuable than two hours spent making a lunch like that! I spend about 15 minutes making my daughters lunch, and she is always involved in the process, sitting with me, and picking which fruits and veggies she wants to go in.
That's so cute and cool but fuck all that lol my kids get a sandwich, chips, fresh fruit and a water bottle. Take it or leave it. 😂
so cute!
That was a very interesting documentary ! :) Thanks for sharing ! I don't have children for now so I make bento for myself, but if I ever have one, I will be so pleased to prepare for him ! :)
Great healthy food for children;)
so cute.. I love japan
The onigiri are so cute! I love bento boxes!!
Really lovely must make the children want to eat
My mom use to put a smiley face with mustard on my sandwich. Take that Japanese lunch box
I will go to Japan just to learn cook for my future kids and make them lunches
I love Bento lunches! I have a lot of cute bento containers and picks. My girls will be getting Bento lunches everyday this year. I don't have the skills or patience to make faces but I'm a rockstar with small cookie cutters 😂
I bet the kids were thinking "what is a strange man and a camera crew doing speaking in a different language and pointing at my food"
WOW! Are you kidding?!?! Amazing
They're sooo adorable
am smiling all the way through this video :)))
Those kids are cute
+Anonymous and how old are you? ^__^

OMG!! Sorry, I replied on a wrong comment :(.. My bad.. I was replying to someone who said "Anything my mom makes for me is special:)"
mommyfloNbabytep oh ok
I’m quite a bit older now and my mother passed away... but when I was a child she used to make me bento boxes for lunch. My teacher (in the USA) was so impressed that everyday I had to “show and tell” my bento box to lunch... it was very strange.
