Travis' room really shows how bad the textures can get since it's meant to be interesting. They will either look their best or look like mud, it's completely random. Most notable is the large Bizarre Jelly 5 poster in the back of Travis' bedroom. This poster looks great in NMH2, and it's a shame how it can look worse in 3. I noticed textures popping in and out from walking around, despite it being a fixed camera. There were some magazines near the camera at one time I noticed the textures quality dropping as I got near them and would improve as I got farther from them. The figures you can collect seem to be affected by this. In the gacha room they look fine as whatever figure you earn will have a 3D preview with no texture issues. Actually the whole gacha room doesn't appear to have any texture issues. Once you are able to get a really good look at them in Travis' room these figures will have the worse possible texture quality now applied to them. This is something I hope gets patched.

I'm confident if a Switch game would use more rendering techniques from the PS2 era they could get higher quality visuals and performance. Modern techniques look great on powerful hardware but when you're doing all these new techniques and simulation I think there's a lower bounds where it starts to look bad. Like here in NMH3, the lighting on characters have big blotches of brightness that I don't think looks good, where I would prefer static but well designed textures.
On PS2 everything was prebake lighting and authored character model textures. There's little to no dynamics but the colors and contrast can look great with little power requirements. I've been going back to games on the PS2, like LotRs The Thrid Age, and they look great. So I know if a Switch game would take a step back they could get a great looking game at 60fps.

    • @JerryFlowersIII

Hell yeah, The Third Age! Such a great game!
I agree with everything you said. Using less expensive; more intelligent lighting techniques and rendering tech could make things both look better, and be less demanding for the given hardware. Ultimately, I want (and did already when it first released) better hardware for the Switch because it was quite outdated when it released, and it's VASTLY under-powered - even given its platform - but in the absence of better hardware, more intelligent use of older techniques could have made for a better graphical experience - both for NMH3, and many other Switch games.

    • @MrStrangermoon

the problem is there is no tools or engine to use to create like old even 2007 era like games forget about ps2. making that era of game with that era tools much harder to make new game with new era tools. even the indie games uses new engines and bcouse of that even those suffer for performance. its not about texture quality or other effects. if you put raw shadow of collosus on switch without work even perforomace suffer again.

I think lack of experience or short production time led to poor visual performance. The game has few objects per scene but at the same time lots of popups, you see the trees sprouting piece by piece as the camera approaches, here lacks a more effective preselection feature, UE4 and Maxwell have Raster Order Views supported, you can upload For raster units and the set of triangles you want, you define frustums with delimited spaces giving priority to what to render etc. This game seems to use little of that, it feels like a PS2/GC game that takes advantage of particles and updated lighting causing fragment saturation and taking away texels, resolution or frame rate stability to continue.

UE4 has really proven to be a horrible choice for the Switch. It's cool to see some of these features running on a portable system from a technical perspective, but my god is it never attractive. The materials never look accurately lit enough to feel realistic, and it's extremely unflattering when they aren't. Image quality is always abysmal, and the stuff that matters most get way too many cutbacks (image quality sucks because of the severity of specular aliasing + low resolution, low LOD distance, terrible texture filtering, texture resolution might as well be a primary color art style, etc).
In hindsight, the switch as a piece of hardware has proven to be one of the least interesting devices for me personally, solely because of the era of software it's released in. It's the hardware I always dreamed that Nintendo would make, yet it's in the era of 95% of games being completely shoehorned onto such a platform. The best looking games on this platform are Wii U/360/PS3 ports, and it's solely because the technology was from an era designed for making the most out of hardware of a similar profile. They aren't necessarily the most technically impressive on paper mind you, but they are the ones that don't make you wish you were playing on any other piece of hardware.

So the problem with them is not that they're Open World, but that Ubisoft always has the same boring Cookie Cutter formula for it. So far, it’s great but plenty of “I wish they did X” scenarios like adding more death glove powers as mix-matching those power chips in TSA was pretty fun, or having a bit more beam katana options that at least change the visual of it.
Not a big fan with the new direction they went with the pre-boss fights. I wish they kept it how it was in the previous games where you fight your way up to the boss, rather than collecting gems and then reaching the boss. I think it was designed that way to promote exploration but either because the small staff size, the staff’s skill and optimization with Unreal or time, the open world section is pretty barren that it’s not quite as interesting to move around in.
Also I really wish Suda didn’t kill off some bosses before the boss fight. It’s to deliver the idea of “kill the past, kill the life” theme but the new bosses are so interesting and eye candy that it felt like a huge waste to kill them off.
I think many people can feel a bit confused if they haven’t at least read the summary of the Silver Case trilogy and Red Blue Green on some wiki or tv tropes or whatever. It might explain stuff that made you go “what?” or “who?”
I still had my fun and I hope someday for a PC port so I don’t have to keep asking to borrow it.
