  • In 1982 British actor Jon Pertwee was playing a much loved role of television's Worzel Gummidge at the Cambridge Theatre in London. He was, for many years, in the radio series The Navy Lark (along with Leslie Philips who is interviewed on another video upload talking to Mark Caldwell), He was also of course a Dr Who, the first "Doctor" in colour on British TV. Lawrence Windley visited him at the theatre.

jon was highly respected but also underrated at the same time.
Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee were the best Doctors for the 70's and early eighties, just perfect in all respects of the show.
Jon is and will always be greatly missed by myself and I hope many others.
I am happy he does not see the world as it is now.
R.I.P Mr Jon Pertwee you are and will always be missed.

Pertwee and Baker were the best of the “classic” doctors. Patrick Troughton got a few notable series, but it was really Jon Pertwee who brought this series to life. And then, Christopher Eccleston after the dreary 1980s and sad death of Doctor Who.

I experienced that at a Chicago "Doctor Who" convention in the 80's. He turned up as Worzel to judge the costume contest, and was in character throughout, but afterward I ended up sharing an elevator with him and his minder. I was dressed as Zaphod Beeblebrox at the time, and I asked him how long it took to get done up as Worzel.
"Oh, about twenty minutes," he said, sounding like the Doctor. "Probably as long as it took you to get into that."

I grew up with Doctor Who from the late 60s (Patrick T) onwards. But if I were an actor, I’d really study Pertwee’s interviews because he could take a nothing interviewer and make the interview fascinating. Funny though, re: this interview, I have some family in Tooting Bec!

16:30 - the reason why no-one wanted to “take over” Worzel (at that time) is because the ITV company that made it - Southern - lost their ITV franchise in December 1980 to TVS, effective from January 1982.
TVS had no interest in carrying on any Southern programmes. The show was offered to HTV in Cardiff and Anglia TV in Norwich, both of whom were interested but deals fell through…
