    Ah, I swear everyone misses the word 'decade' in Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus. It's about watching someone you love descend into addiction while you move on with life. She goes over everything she's done in the last 10 years since they initially met and fell for each other(perhaps described in maroon?) And describes all the things she changed, all while watching his addiction get worse. By the time they finally reconnect they're too changed by time, he's turned her into an idea, manic pixie dream girl style, and that's why saying "i loved you the way that you were" would hurt most. Maybe if she hadn't been too young to know what to do to help him, they might have worked out and avoided all the pain on both sides. You always wonder.

      Though he still drinks some alcohol and smokes marijuana,to my knowledge, he has been clean of hard drugs for 5 years. He mentioned the anniversary at a concert last year. Matty speaks very openly about his history of addiction in interviews. You should listen to him talk about it. His interview with Zane Lowe in 2022 is especially good. He also mentions Peter Pan and the lost boys in that interview.

      @@ssalas7374 yeah that's what I found when I looked it up. I didn't know anything about him cause I don't really follow celebrity personal stuff, but I'm a therapist and heard on my first listen all the hallmarks of leaving an addict and wondering if you could've helped them if you stayed. No one seemed to pick up on it though so I checked and found a lot of info he's shared about his addiction and going into rehab in 2017. Also found the info that they met around 2014, so from the album context it looks like they fell for each other back when she was trying to be very private about her love life and they had a short fling (perhaps for a fortnight described in maroon?) but Taylor was too young to help and saw him going in a direction she wanted nothing to do with. So whatever they had was put on pause indefinitely while she moved on, but she watched him go through all this from afar until Jack reintroduced them post rehab. It makes so much sense why they went so head over heels for each other once she ended things with Joe. Considering the pills line in smwel, I don't know if he relapsed but I think it's more likely he doesn't consider certain 'party drugs' off limits. Maybe he's said before, I'm just going off basic info and what I've seen in the lyrics. Either way, I assume from all the songs that by the time they reconnected they were completely different people who wanted completely different things, but it had to hurt if it's something she's thought about for 10 years.

    • @Anna13Tonks
      @Anna13Tonks Před 3 měsíci +4

      To me it feels a lot like this song is about Joe and the "decade" line refers to them together for a long time or what feels like a very long time, and the drugs either refers to anti-depressants or is just an insertion about Matty in a song about Joe

    The Albatross is a reference to 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' where a mariner shoots down an albatross believing it was bad luck, but it was actually good luck. It only became bad luck BECAUSE he shot it down, and then he has to wear it around his neck as a symbol of guilt and shame. Taylor is the albatross and yes theyre warning her new lover, but also they got it wrong. She will only write songs about cutting people down if they do something bad to her first, but if you treat her well, she'll treat you well and lift you up.

      The way she thought about this story and made it work for her own experience will never not be mind blogging to me. The way some people miss how she’s talking about how Cassandra was killed because she was right about her prophecy, as if we don’t remember the iconic line, “the old Taylor can’t come to the phone… she’s dead.” 🤯🤯🤯
      She was killed but like the Phoenix, Taylor found a way to come back stronger, in spite of all the hate and vile that was directed her way.

    I think that's the whole point of the double album. The first half is for the Midnights fans, the second half is for the Folklore/Evermore fans. I mean, she kind of did the same thing on Midnights, with the 3AM tracks being more for the Folklore/Evermore folks.

  • @faeriekat_
    @faeriekat_ Před 3 měsíci +22

    Honestly I think the front half being an absolute mess helps tell the story. Immediately after a breakup you're a hot bloody mess, just like the front half. Theres beauty and introspection in it but its not ordered at all. As the album continues you can see her starting to try to pull it together which is why the back half feels a little.. better. Both halves as a whole really tell the whole story. The timeline in chronological relationship order doesn't matter, but the timeline of her processing and grieving and coming to terms with the relationships DOES matter.

    I can't believe that I keep hearing people say that TPD needs editing. It's like asking why Pride & Prejudice is a book and not a short story and saying that Jane Austen needed a better editor. I mean, Joe Wright's film version is easy on the eye and ear, but that BBC mini series still wins in the end of the day in terms of story telling.
    Every song in TPD is there for a reason and it's the beauty of this album. It is not for quick consumption, and once you're past the stage of 'who is this song about', it's for sitting with the feelings and emotions that every note and lyric evokes in you.

    Cassandra was the princess of troy she was given the gift of prophecy by Apollo who was in love with her after she rejected his advances he sabotaged her gift of prophecy with a curse that no one would believe her predictions she predicted the fall of Troy but no one believed her. In the context of Taylor this song could be about the Kanye West situation when the Kim “leaked” the phone call the world turned on her and called her a snake (they filled her cell with snakes) and there was a loud up roar but when the uncut phone call came out a few years back it was silent. The bridge “the family the greed the Christian chorus line… “ is about the Kardashians and Kanye’s Christian era

    I think her relationship with Travis will give her a certain peace that was hard to find in others.
    Partly because of Travis' own fame and his family already being used to it. Maybe not Swift level used to it but its not new. And they have their own stuff going on to that isn't in competition with her. Their things complement each other.
    I think it's as close to a "normal" situation with friends and family and fun as she could have with someone who makes her feel special. Who is an extrovert. And makes her feel taken care of.
    Also I think the age and timing are good for them both. In a way that had they met 10 years ago, it wouldn't have worked. For either of them. I think they had to mature to enjoy being kidlike
    Her time with Joe worked at that time in her life. 6-7 years is a good run.especially under a microscope and pandemic.
    I think she and Travis will last a while. Maybe not forever but for a good bit.
    And I think we will get some happy songs and maybe even some lullabies.

    • @theConquerersMama
      @theConquerersMama Před 3 měsíci +1

      @janellekeller52 I don't want just happy song. Sheesh.
      I do want her to be able to have a wide range of emotions and experiences and feel extended periods of love and peace.
      She has always processed and chronicled her emotions and experiences through her music. Yes, she likes sad songs and storytelling. So do I.
      I also just think that you get to a point in your thirties where you get comfortable with wanting to be happy and silly and appreciating peace & relative calm. I think she's in that phase.
      I want her, the person, to be able to fully enjoy the many shades life offers. Being content is a shade. And it gave us albums like Lover & 1989 & even Folklore to a degree before.
      Anyone defining Taylor as just sad songs says more about themselves than her or her music.
      Edit to add- I first saw her perform in a Kansas Target parking lot in 2006. I have been a fan ever since. I have watched her career like a proud auntie. I told people the get go that she was special and was far more than what the first impression.

    The Albatross goes between being an omen if good to being an omen of evil after the sailors kill her... until the sailors realise that they were just always projecting their own issues into her and she was just an innocent bird.

    I think another facet of the manuscript that you didn’t touch on or maybe fathom is the long live element at the end. It’s not her story anymore because her fans have taken her recounts of her life and made them their own. They aren’t her stories. They are ours now. It is really special and feels like a little acknowledgement of how special her music is to her fans. :))

The Black Dog and The Prophecy are among my absolute favorites (top 5 probably) out of the whole 31 songs

I really like Peter too, but it's one of the ones I need to listen to more still (with 31 songs some I just haven't fully digested yet lol but i love the sound of it). I Hate It Here feels like her explaining the origins of folklore/evermore and how she felt like a shut-in due to both covid and Joe's want for the two of them to just stay home together all the time when she used to always go out and be with friends or attend/host parties all the time... so now she's having these lucid dreams and writing poetry and asks Joe (the "finance guy") write with her, trying to bring some new dynamic into their relationship by writing songs together. But sadly even that couldn't fully revive their relationship and that's when songs like Guilty As Sin come into the storyline where Matty sent her a song she'd forgotten about and she suddenly is like "Omg duh! THIS is a guy who actually gets me" and starts daydreaming about and then planning to go rekindle things with him as soon as she and Joe are officially over.

It's such a beautiful album that fully dives into the creativity and possibilities of the human voice, combining so many variations of singing and noises to create one gorgeous blend of an almost fully acapella album. Its one of her most unique yet accessible albums and has proven itself to be such a popular set of songs, with one of her performances for this album even taking place in the Olympics!!

    19:11 Regarding The Albatross, when she and Matty went public with their relationship last spring, a section of her fan base came after him. They spread horrible fake news stories about him on social media, called him racist, a nazi, homophobic (really funny considering the number of men he’s kissed at his concerts) and none of that stuff is true. And, even though his fans tried to defend him, people just generally believe what they see on the internet. Her fans sent an open letter to Taylor, calling her out for dating him. Telling her it was her responsibility to break up with him. You can still find this letter on Google if you search. Matty and his family received death threats. They sent ai generated images of him dead from overdosing to his mother. It was brutal. This song really makes me cry, the line about them coming to drag him from his bed and her trying to spread her wings like a parachute and protect him. 😢

    I may be reaching but I think CoSoSoM and the lyric about, “you needed me but you needed drugs more and I couldn’t watch it happen” is deeper than the surface level interpretation we’re giving it. She’s mentioned Joe being depressed and maybe even clinically depressed; what if she’s saying you needed medications to cope with your sadness instead of leaning on me and I couldn’t stay because there was no space for her (Renegade shoutout). Just a thought.

      @@sarahgray6157 she’s not saying that at all in the song? “you needed me but you needed drugs more and i couldn’t watch it happen”. in this interpretation, shes saying that he really did love her but he wouldn’t get help for his depression, and she couldn’t keep watching him suffer without trying to get help. this is also one of the reasons that i think the song is about joe, because it references her leaving, whereas it seems like through context clues you can see that matty was the one who pulled away first.

    I don't agree with the songs you've linked Joe to from Folkore/Evermore/Midnights.
    She said so many times that he didn't care about what everyone said they should be. He just cared about her. And he wasn't overly bothered about the secrecy. She said so many times that he just didn't listen or pay attention to all the noise and drama. And NO. There is not one thing in the lyrics that suggest that he cheated. And there is NO WAY that if he had, she wouldn't have said it very explicitly in a song.
    From only looking at lyrics, it sounds like Joe struggled quite badly with depression and he just couldn't get himself out of it. He didn't know how badly it was hurting Taylor and making her question herself in the relationship. Thus the lines, "you sacrificed us to the gods of your bluest days" and "How much sad, did you, think I had, did you, think I had in me".
    And in the Long Pond Studio Sessions discussion with Aaron about Hoax, she says that the line "don't want no other shade of blue but you" was specifically about how she felt about her relationship at that time. She said something like, if you have to be sad, who is the one person you would sit in that sadness with.
    People do Joe so wrong in retrospect when she very clearly says on the sleeve of the album that she wrote many of these songs with intense immediacy and that many of those slights were self-inflicted.
    No one who has listened to her music since Reputation can pretend like it wasn't the most important and positive relationship for a good few years until it fell apart.

      “He was with her in dreams” is a lyric in FOTS. Also they “fell victim to interloper’s glances.” I’m not sure they cheated but perhaps both were starting to have feelings for others? Clearly Taylor did. I think that’s why she mentioned him being with her in dreams and shortly after guilty as sin? Comes up. She knew the fans wouldn’t come for him dreaming about another woman if she shared all of THAT. lol
