  • The original three Spyro games on the PlayStation are pretty great! They're also getting remakes, but before that lovely nonsense rolls around, let's examine the originals, shall we?

    1. the dragon in the beginning of 1 is clearly being interviewed on TV hence the boom mic 2. he mispronounces gnasty's name. you missed the joke. 3. gnasty is obviously watching it on TV but you're right that it'd be a nice touch if you saw the TV somewhere when you get to his lair at the end

    Three things!
    1. Overall, a great overview of probably my favorite game(s) of all time!
    2. The, "G's," in Gnasty Gnork are supposed to be silent.
    3. You can totally aim those grenades while playing as Agent 9! Go back and play it again. If you hold the throw button, it gives you a dotted arc and an X which you use to aim!

I agree that the bosses in Spyro 1 are largely superfluous, especially Toasty. That said, Toasty was my first boss... ever. I was maybe 6 or 7 and not very good at the game. So I was super nervous to fight Toasty; he looked intimidating and, though I died many times to the dogs, I eventually beat him by the skin of my baby teeth. The 'surprise' moment at the end was a fun reward for little 6yo me.
It's not challenging to most players, but for youngsters, it is the very first (tiny) hill to climb.

I was kinda disappointed that you didn't talk about the soundtracks at all because the music holds most of the nostalgia in the games for me (especially Ripto's Rage, Autumn Plains especially 👌). The music adds a lot to the games in terms of ambience/game feel. However, I totally understand why it was left out, because music is especially hard to tackle from an objective point of view. OVERALL, amazing video, would definitely recommend to anyone that expresses interest in the Spyro trilogy. Great job man.

Something really specific: I love that you pointed out the second game's charge and flame teaching mechanic in glimmer - I still remember the first time when I played the game (when I was like 7) and I had the huge power trip of charging the defenseless little enemies followed by the crash down to Earth that comes from getting squashed by the big guy after an unsuccessful charge haha.

Hey, love this video; thanks for making it. It brings up many things: level design, animation, importance of good controls, straying away from core gameplay, your love for certain parts and annoyances, etc. Your analysis of game design here is awesome to watch/listen to. I'll be sure to rewatch to pick more things out where Spyro got it wrong. I say this because I'm working on a 3d platformer collect-a-thon myself, it's called PB & Jay. I could talk for hours about level design and 3d platformers in general, but I digress. Once again, thanks for making this video. :)

49:15 I mean this is the same as in Cliff Town but you called it's level design shite when a barrier confused you...
50:20 Every type of layout in the second game can be found in the first (backtraking, shooting cannon, if you're taking about orb challenges thery are in the same catagory as mini games just sectioned off parts of the level for that one specific gameplay elements. Also 50:25 and 1:02:00 Doesn't that make the level design worse since every level is predictable now being a donut? Even Spyro 1/2 has linear and donut levels, Spyro 3 only has donuts making it have less variety. Point A to B is bad but donuts are good? Spyro 3 is just as or even more linear than Spyro 1. There's no real branching paths to speak of when everything leads to mini-game levels and having layers/floors is common in all three games. Very interesting video though good job.

Ok so you don’t pronounce the Gs in Gnasty Gnorc... same as you don’t pronounce a G when saying Gnorc. The joke is the interviewer getting his name wrong and the dragon then corrects them by saying it correctly. They definitely confused a lot of people with this one though.

It was insinuated that it was a tv interview through the use of the boom mic. The idea was that gnasty gnorc was watching from his world on a tv of some sort. His name is spelt Gnasty Gnorc but is pronounced Nasty Norc. Surprised you brought up how you can get lost in the first hub world of the first game. Never see people ask for games to be more linear rather than open before? It gives the player freedom. You spawn at a dragon statue who tells you what to do. If you go to the balloonist he tells you what he needs to fly to next hub world. It doesn't take long for people to realize that they can go into the portals into other worlds and collect gems and eggs there. As for cliff town, the boundary is clearly marked with poles to signify that it is the area you can't proceed beyond. It wasn't stopping you from going behind the first building. Finding these secret areas were half the fun of the old spyro games

I don't normally comment on videos, but I just wanted to show some respect for someone who seemed to work pretty hard on a big project like this. I like listening to retrospectives and analysis videos, so when I seek them out and find videos by people I'm not familiar with, I'm still willing to give them a shot when they talk about games I care about. I enjoyed the video, and although the audio sometimes gets a bit high and low, it was overall enjoyable. I'm surprised to hear your praise on Tree Tops. I have never heard anyone say anything positive about that level, and while I may not personally agree, I can't help but respect someone who appreciates something that seems so universally hated. That being said, I enjoyed the snow leopard quest a lot as a kid. Snow leopards and leopards as a whole were some of my favorite animals at a young age, and I remember replaying the level multiple times just to get to that part, even if it was easy. Overall, I appreciate the work you put into this and I intend to look over the rest of your channel to see if anything else catches my interest. I know this comment comes a few years after you've uploaded this, but thanks for giving me something to listen to during a mindless shift.

Hey, bro. First up I'd like to say I really like the video! While I disagree with a sum of what you said I found it to be entertaining none-the-less and had a great time watching it. So much so that I find myself on the third watch, haha.
There's been something that's gotten my panties in a bunch since the first watch-through and it's the call-out on Gnasty Gnorc's name and how the characters interpret it. I've always felt the reason some of the characters pronounce the silent G and some don't has always struck me as a gag on silent letters and/or the dragon's lack of real knowledge and/or respect of this person they're apparently being interviewed on. So much so that they don't even know how/care to pronounce his name properly. Spyro himself never calls him by "G"nasty because Gnasty has established himself as a genuine threat capable of single-handedly and rather easily globally CCing every dragon.
Of course this is all thought proccess from a smooth-brain boi, so it's entirely possible I've looked too far into it.

I really dislike how the Spyro 1 portion is essentially "yadda yadda I didn't like this game so let's get it over with because I started with a later game in the trilogy." Some of the best designed parts like hard to reach areas which require you to think outside the box for those last few gems and, most importantly, are entirely optional for beating the game and were clearly meant for the kids of the time to get more out of their playtime and genuinely feel smart for having figured it out rather than the game handing them the 100% completion for free with a radar are being painted as horrors of game design and flaws for some reason. Really didn't look forward to what is no doubt a praising to high heavens of the second and third games so I didn't stick around for the rest. For what I was hoping would be a fair and balanced dissection with a title like that to start what is essentially 30 minutes of nothing but complaining was a sore disappointment.

Why did you use Legend of Spyro music at the end? I like that particular piece of music, but it feels out-of-place.

It's not a great game, it's almost a perfect triology. It has few cons specially in the level design of the first one, but the second and specially the third one... One of the best games in PlayStation One and my favorite games of all times.

Spyro pronounced Gnasty's name correctly. Ffs you literally have footage in this video of the adult dragon being "interviewed" pronouncing the name correctly, the "g-nasty" pronunciation was clearly a joke.
