@@froufrou7773 , about five minutes, I think. It turns out that here, 100 feels like 80 in Alaska. It’s a dry heat, and my body feels grateful to be outdoors here, until about 115F. The downside is that my little dog, Bella, can’t take the heat and she gets too toasty around 95, which means that I need to stay mostly indoors with her during the hottest part of the year. We are close to Death Valley now, about an hour from Las Vegas. One of the best parts our our relocation is the night skies. It is lovely to stargaze without turning into ice! 😄

🥺 I truly didn’t expect that whole speech to come out of my mouth, it just kinda tumbled out and along came the tears. Sometimes it’s tempting to cut that stuff out because I worry people will think I get over emotional or sobby, but its just real, and if it makes one less person feel alone about it then it was worth it ♥️

I encourage you to keep up your efforts. I am 56 this year and have allowed myself to get in terrible physical condition. Mostly due to so many injuries and surgeries but now that I've got new hips, and new knees, and my back surgery and my Shoulder surgery done, maybe it's time to get back into shape too!? so, let's do this! This young lady truly is an inspiration
My dad's maintenance business does winterizing for second summer homes in New Hampshire. This season I helped with some small ones.
We shut the water off, then use the air compressor to blow out any remaining water on both hot & cold lines, flushing toilets & we use a hand pump to get the last bits out of toilet tank & bowl & leaving faucets open.
Then use RV/marine antifreeze a pink liquid sold at hardware stores, we pump all plumbing lines with the liquid until it runs fully pink through all faucets & shut them off so the lines are full.
Lastly making sure we put a bit of the liquid down each drain to fill traps & making sure to pour some in toilet bowl & tank.
I do not know if this information is actually of any help to you Hannah but I hope so & you are welcome to reach out if any questions.

When winter is over and they flush lines, wouldn’t that put antifreeze in the water system? Can that contaminate water that is in a system where it’s recycled? Can the filtering system take all that back out? Or in a septic system… can’t that harm the environment?? I’m being genuine.
Hi Hannah,
I heard you have to use the non toxic antifreeze which I think is the marine type, as someone said, not the car radiator type. You also have to drain the water heater too and the washer pipes. Yes as above person said you have to put some antifreeze in all the drains ; the sinks, toilet tank and the toilet, the tub and drain the shower head pipe too. How will your plants survive the winter? You would have to leave the heat on and a boiler needs water to run unless you have electric heat? I would bring all your plants over someone’s house to watch for you. I thought you’d be staying at the new house this winter? Sounds like you are going to take the van somewhere warm.
Whatever you do be safe and happy and live life to the fullest!

Why in the world would your dad put antifreeze into supply lines?? The rest of your advice is spot on, but it makes no sense to put antifreeze into the supply lines after they have been blown clean by the compressor. I am in a much colder climate than New Hampshire and have never ever put antifreeze into supply lines. As someone else mentioned…. don’t forget to drain the hot water tank.

This is such a great point. My parents always assume that when I am alone I am unhappy. I am never been able to convince them that many times it's what I prefer. When I feel that I am overly anxious or depressed this type of work/therapy is my only cure.

I spent the entirety of my teenage years and into my early 20's feeling constantly depressed and hopeless. Finally, at 23, I feel like I'm coming out on the other side. A lot of my more recent depression came from feeling like all my teen years were wasted on my mental illness. Your videos have not only helped me on my journey towards fulfillment in every day, but they have also shown me that you can find happiness in any stage of life, and there is always a silver lining.

You can get heat tape and insulation at the hardware store for your pipes, ( pay the extra and get a good brand), as well as heavy plastic and framing wood for the windows, check the weather stripping on the doors, check the skirting around the house and fix any holes, as an extra you can get heavy blankets to hang over glass doors and outer doors. You got this!
During one of my highest moments in the past few years where I felt happy and in tune with myself and nature I was watching your videos religiously. I haven’t watched for a few months now as school has been taking up more of my time and I’ve been busy but during that time I’ve felt myself slipping away into routine too much. A lot less present and just going through the motions to survive each day of working. After stepping back and recognizing how un-lively I’ve been though I’ve been catching up on all of your videos and your refreshing, positive attitude and way of living is definitely helping me to get back to a version of myself I’ve neglected for a while now. To clear the pipes of water you just need to find where the water goes into the house & turn the tap off then run your taps until all the water is clear 😊

One of my favorite CZcamsrs. You always inspire me to get working on my cabin projects. Yesterday I worked retrofitting and framing a window which I’ve never done before. It’s not perfect but it will work. Snow is most likely going to reach our valley in a few days, and the mountain tops are dusted with snow. My camper gets chilly in the winter so many modifications have been made/will need to be put into place for the coming cold weather.
Effing love that. Gosh I love hearing when people get that push to do something new or a project they’ve been meaning to get to. ♥️

Sometimes you just have to make the best out of a bad situation and remember that someday, things will get better. Lovely video. Might be an idea to put a shallow cat litter tray or some kind of tray underneath the bedding so the mouse wee doesn't soak into your van. Then you can remove it and wash the tray.
I've watched you for some time now and you inspire me every day to be the best I can be and try new things that I never thought I could do. Because of you I thought I wanted to be a homesteader and live off the land but I have since experienced some septic problems at home and realized I could not live without water or a toilet. Hannah, here’s a tip for your mouse cage: Mice love to climb so you can just add there little branches and twigs (with leafs if possible!) and kinda just jam them in the cage so she can climb all up to the sealing. Dry autumn leaf piles, moss and turf will give your mouse different kind of natural hiding places. They also love the smells wild plants/leafs etc. give. Ps. You’re awesome. ❤

I was thinking along the same lines. My concern was more about the litter. You are a great mouse mom! I know you’ll do what is right for Despereux. Coming from an animal shelter background, I might line the bottom and sides of the mouse house with some kind of vinyl or plastic that your can “sanitize” in between cleanings. That is all. Hi Hannah. Just finished watching you latest vid. With regards to winter prepping the homestead, are you in contact with the previous owners? If you are, ask them what their winter routine was when they lived there. You never know what advice they can offer.
Did they have any particular issues with frozen pipes inside & outside? Inspect the lagging (Sorry I’m British) insulation around pipe work.
If you have freezing cold pipes coming into a building, this can draw heat to it & thus lowers the room temp.
Do you know where your stopcocks are inside & out? Sorry Water shut off valves. Knowing where these are could save you a lot of hassle if a burst pipe happens. Same applies if you have gas & electric. Know how to shut them off in an emergency.
Keep plenty of batteries & flashlights handy.
Avoid candles if you have a gas line.
Remember heat rises, so try not to lose the heat from downstairs (Sorry again, I’m British) by heating spaces that are not in use upstairs.
Look at areas where air leakage could occur. You don’t want to be wasting energy by just letting it escape outside.
Also, I’d park your vehicles facing downhill. This way the alternator isn’t trying to push the mechanism uphill. Also, it’s easier to drive forward in the snow rather than reversing in it.
You’re doing a fantastic job, so keep up the great work & keep safe.

We used to have a rural plumber come out - it was quite cheap and he did everything including antifreeze in the toilet. (Who knew?) He just planned on doing it every year and it was maybe 35 or 40 $. Same deal in the spring - I think even cheaper in the spring.
Hey Hannah, I'm going to tell you what my husband and I do when we leave our vacation home for the summer. (1) Shut off the main water valve to the house. (2) Start with the upstairs first and turn on all of your sink faucets to drain them and leave them in the open position along with bathtubs and showers. Also, flush the toilets. (3) Do the same thing on the first floor and then any basement items. Don't forget to keep the toilet lids and seat area open and dry up as much water as you can. Hope this helps.

I started watching the video last night on my work break. I didn’t have time to finish so I started again this morning. Sitting here, feeling the sunshine through the window & feeling super grateful….I got to that part of the video. Aww Hannah everything is going to be just fine. I think you were being emotional because your mom was visiting you. I get exactly what you said about your teen years, my daughter is 17 and is currently in therapy, depression and anxiety. Take one day at a time, they'll be highs and they'll be lows, but you know that's life. You've come a long ways in your life and have much to be proud of. You've got this!!!
You live the life I want to live someday once I'm out of the place I'm in now. Your videos remind me that the happiness that I want is real and is in my future too. You may not be able to tell your younger self, but you are telling so many people that this happiness is possible and giving so many young people the motivation to keep going, even when staying is the hardest thing to do, myself included. Thank you and I love getting to see what mischief and madness you get up to.

Oh I know very well those happy cries out of devotion for life and what you created. Those "pinch me" moments. The realization that this is your reality. I started photography in August 2020, found my passion on which I worked 24/7. Tomorrow I'm flying from Berlin to New York for a job and to meet 2 other photographers. I'm soo soo proud of my younger self 2years ago. She did amazing and I can't thank her enough. ❤️ Like you did amazing. All the hart but loving work lead to the moment where you are now and it's truly beautiful. ❤️

I'm in love with the mouse house in the van! Some dim little fairy lights on ceiling of her cage would be so cute So you can watch her at night!!
You could put some linoleum or spray the floor of the house with a leakproof rubber based paint. This would help keeping the smell down & save the wood flooring in the house.
