20 years ago today at the age of 17 I graduated from Marine Corps Boot Camp Parris Island officially becoming a U.S. Marine. March 29th 2002. Platoon 2030. Right about now Drill instructor Staff Sergeant Green (Jason Green ) called the last inspection arms. A pure moment of absolute unity was had as the platoon bellowed out the ditty with so much power that it cause light fixture housings to fall. The Marines at the Sheraton played this (or a similar one) during quarantine before boot camp. I can tell you right now, most documentaries only show a third of what recruit training's really like.
Brings back memories. My drill instructors weren’t that calm. Ever. Lol. Even on the crucible they were all over us. My SDI told us he didn’t care we finished the crucible and he would take us to the pit and smoke us still. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Damn, Sgt Daley was my series Gunnery Sergeant when I was on Parris Island in Lima Co in 2000. He snuck in on me on fire watch one night and came up behind me and put his hand around my neck and said, “bang recruit, you’re dead! Nice to see him as a young Drill Instructor. Semper Fi!
I didn't have DI Sgt. Daley but he was a DI in Plt 3090 above me (Jul-Oct 1998). He called cadence the best and despite being a DI somewhere under that facade he seemed to really give a shit about training recruits. And, when we went to the gas chamber, my group was the first in and out. Donneth was first and I was second and he came up to Donneth and screamed in his face "oh yeah! That's what I like to see!" and grabbed Donneth's snot and ate it.
Back when the Discovery Channel had good shows and Discovery Kids was a channel I never got to watch, because it was a "premium" cable channel and on satellite TV.
The chapel part... recruits get 4 hrs of "free time" if they don't attend chapel service??? Not back in 1985... when the Catholics & Mormons went out early, the rest of us got smoked/slayed and were "trained"... when we Protestants went, the remaining got the same... there were no "atheists" in our platoon after Sunday #1... heck, some tried to go to both services... LOL!
I went to church one sunday, and hated that the DIs were there looking to see if we were fucking around or sleeping. The next sunday, I ended up going to the Muslim sermon because the DIs were not allowed in there , some black muslim dude would just come in pop in a tape about muhammed and leave. There was like 2 other dudes including me every sunday, we slept for those hours on a persian rug lol. I'm christian by the way. 3rd Battalion Kilo Company Plt 3229 (2007).

Later, a drill instructor said that the trainees have 56 training days in the cycle. With the 24 days left, there is the pickup week (first week of paperwork, processing, forming, initial gear and equipment issue, and, of course, the IST). My question: prior to the pandemic, where did the last 17 days go?

They didn't show the corporal who runs around sticking a knife to your throat while waiting for uniforms ? Happened to us in 2005 while in receiving. DI just let him do it. He would stop every few guys and do it. I thought I was going to be next and i was fully prepared to fold him up. I didn't sign up to have a knife to my throat. Thankfully he passed me by and got a guy a few recruits down. I dunno if that happened everywhere else but it sure did to us . Golf Company. But my time in the Marines almost ended night 1. I was fully prepared to kill that corporal if he put that knife on my throat. I was a 6 feet 2 farm boy from Kentucky and could have destroyed him if I wanted. The scary part is if I had they would have denied the knife existed and thrown me into prison for attacking a NCO. I expected everything else in boot camp but not that!! It was outside the building where you get your uniforms and take off civilian clothes. Long line outside down the side walk. That corporal was having a great time with his knife out there. I'm surprised nobody knocked his brains out. He's still the biggest coward I ever saw. Terrorising scared recruits with a knife assuming nobody would fight back. I hope someone knocked his ass out later . All he needed to do was pick the wrong one But that's the only shady thing I saw in boot. The rest was pretty squared away

It is 1999. I went to boot camp in June 1999 and my Senior Drill Instructor was still a green belt in this documentary. Also I was from the same recruiting station in Connecticut as recruit Joey Costello at the same time, so I know it has to be 1999.
As a retired Army combat veteran, I appreciate this video. No matter what branch you joined, we all have the same mission. With that being said, one thing I noticed is the lack of minorities being interviewed, I think it's important to hear what they have to say about their experience during boot camp and why they decided that join the Corps.
