Hugelkultur 101!
Vložit
- čas přidán 29. 09. 2022
- This technique it’s a sort of Hugelkultur which means using different materials to layer the bottom part of your raised beds, providing moisture retention, building fertility and a great way to recycle woody debris.
I usually keep all my old pots with dry plants and roots and use them the next season on one of the layers. Woodchips around your raised bed are optional but ideal to feed the microorganisms in your soil!
LAYERS:
- Cardboard if you have weeds or grass at the bottom
- Hardwood logs (don’t use black lotus, black walnut or old growth redwood)
- Smaller branches (I used apple tree cuttings)
- Spoiled Hay or dry leaves
- Unfinished compost
- Well rotted / nutrient rich compost
- Top soil
- Vermiculite or perlite for aeration and drainage

you’re one of my favorite content creators thank you for your time and energy on being so resourceful and sustainable! i strive to create a garden of my own full of abundance like this
Aw thanks a lot, I really appreciate it! You can do the same just start small and slowly add up more plants :)
Omg that's so smart. My neighbors have a humongous tree that drops tons of twigs and leaves in my backyard. I am going to give it a try
I’m glad you liked the idea 😊
Yes. Not only is it cheap, but very good for the plants. Through time it breaks down to feed the plants. Good work!! Aloha🤙🏼🙏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you and yes that’s absolutely true 😊
Your garden is a dream of mine once I own a house 🥺
You can definitely do it 😊
❤️🔥
Raised beds are beautiful for rentals. I have 9 total, and they are big, but i do have more land as a renter than most, and my landlord is a farmer, he has cows so that does help. But even if I had an apartment, I would try very hard to make this happen
I did that in 5 gallon buckets this year. Worked wonderfully.
It’s a great system!
I have been watching your videos for a few weeks now bro and I love it. You have givin me so many ideas and inspirations to do with my own garden. Thank you your content is working
The view from above is awesome!
Thank you, much appreciate it 😊
Love this!! Helps with water retention too
That is the real definition of a real man.
Love your idea,my husband did this, using up cuttings etc to fill raised beds,we grew 8 cauliflowers in a 1and a half metres round bed, delicious and no chemicals,so exciting
That’s awesome 😊😊
Wow! I like those little flowers.
Thank you 😊
Idk, i'm just in love with him 😍❤️
Haha 💚🫶
That is exactly what I did and it worked. So good to see you recommend it too.Thankyou from South Africa.
Awesome 😊😊
I like that you added vermiculite to your compost
You can skip that phase but I do it just in case to add aeration and drainage 😊
I'm loving your content. Please keep sharring
Thank you, I will 😊
You are doing the right thing, I see you 👏
Thanks a lot 😊
yeah, the wood also releases heat in winter, keeping the roots warm
I'm convinced you can start compost on space, I've seen compost being used with cheapest mats and still yield terrific results!
I've used this method so many times in my garden
It works a treat 👍
Started this last year. Best yet!
I enjoy watching & listening to you
Love your tattoos 💜
Thank you so much 🫶
I think I’m in love. Lol. A man after my own heart. I love hill gardens. Created similar beds for my mom. They are still producing wildly beautiful and ginormous vegetables.
Compost season implement organic matter, garden sings for nutrients.
Yep, that’s is true!
@@SpicyMoustache Trilling flora sing for joy!
I love to see somebody or caliber planning flowers 😆
Thank you for useful info.
I’m glad to hear you liked it 😊
Opinel are great knives. Cool that you use one!
Very nicely done, thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I’m happy you liked it 😊
Yes great backyard garden raised bed example
I love you bro, you have honestly inspired me and given me new ideas to try, bless you
Aw thank you bro!!!
Don't judge book by the cover. Love ur passion & content.
That’s awsome how you guys got a shot of the layers in the beginning that’s a great visual.👍🏼
I love your video. I making a small food Forrest and do ruffly the same thing to start my raised garden beds
Just think if we all did this with our Christmas trees and all the cardboard from the presents... What a great tradition that would be.
You just one of my problem
Thank you so much
I like your content it's all about agreculture saving money . How I wish I could do to save more money
Love the ink man , *beautiful*
Thanks a lot 🙏🏻
Thank you
Is there a free way to fill garden beds?
Not entirely free depending on where you live but it’s a one off expense
Outstanding.
Gonna have to check this guy out ... Respect a fellow who uses an Opinel in the garden!
Thank you mate 🙏🏻
Oh more of these please
Me : Have almost zero gardening knowledge
Him : To save money
Me : Bro im in!
Awesome 👏
Thanks a lot 😊
Love this guy
I study agriculture at school long time ago,, sadly never practice after working..
Your channel,, inspired me back and I already practice planting. . I also try hydroponic planting. .have you ever try hydroponic planting 😁✌️
I love your content. when I was really young my dad made us salad every night to go with our dinner.
One night he made a salad with nothing but edible flowers. I was amazed at how many flowers are edible.
i like your garden...💗
I recently saw someone taking all their soft plastics and stuffing it inside their hard plastics. They used them as framing to build a raised bed.
See this dude on gardeners world 💪🏼
I hope you liked the segment 😊
So loving your content. So inspirational and wish that I had my own place where I could plant like you do. So love what you do❤️
Nice garden . 🙏
✨ 💖 HUGELKULTUR 💖✨
is what this is called in German.
Yep and it works great 😊
Love this method for filling beds. Only downside is how much the level drops as thing decompose so you have to always top it up
I always add homemade compost to all my beds, inground and raised every fall as amendment. (Note I also have a giant supply of leaves from huge oaks on my property, and my compost system is quite large since have the space)
You are really cool!
Thanks a lot 😊
Excellent sir
Thank you 😊
I like adding greens in layers with the dry, to add in so organic matter to the carbon from the wood.
Microorganisms need a substrate with similar N:C ratio (~10:1, but this isn't volumetric). That hay's mostly carbon.
Grass cuttings from parks works great! Maybe even already bagged up for you.
By adding greens you'll be favouring a healthier microbial activity in the bed, and preventing rot - we want decomposition, so we also get some skow forming compost in the lower layers :)
I like carboard on top too under a small layer of compost (+ mulch) - I find it helps prevent a lot of weeds from sprouting into the light.
I love this
I'd love to do this but I'm worried about attracting termites since they're very common in my area.
I heard there are essential oils that ward off certain insects. Not sure about termites, but maybe there is something for that too...
Never had that issue before but you could use a simple no dig system in that case. Horse manure and topping once a year with homemade compost
TY for sharing 👍
No worries 😉
I like making it a compost pile and after a year use it as a raised bed. Since I collect tons of compost materials, And have other compost piles.
That’s a great tip if you have enough space
I like using leafs also
This is how I garden, I will never go back to traditional tilling and amending.
so amazing
His looks😈
His hobby 🌸 ♡
You would make a great farmer
Good one
Thank you 😊
I wish I had these skills...maybe if I keep watching your inspiring videos, like the grow my own mushrooms video...❤
Sure, you can do it 100% 😊
Well done. And you don't have to pour water since the tree logs will absorb it when it rains and then slowly release it.
And don't forget to cover with hay to keep humidity in the ground. It will also help with frost by keeping the temperature underneath.
Yeah i know, very good Motivation with Information vids!
Cardbord is the best for worms and can be used for saving the parts of the raise bed from scratches of the pokes from the branches and other harder stuff.
I use pallets covered with cheap aquafoil (0,1mm thick only) and the lot of cardbord for Cover the foil.
When it Drops down, the foil gets less pressure and stays better in place...
Have fun!
Sounds good, thanks 🙏🏻
I'm just saying, I see what you are doing and it's great. 🕊️🌹
Thanks so much 🫶
You are amazing
very creative. i like this 👌
greetz from bavaria... i luv ur vids ...
sangat menginspirasi bagi pecinta tanaman😍 salam saya dari Indonesia😊
It's very important not to forget to put the cameraman in there too!
I flinched when you smacked the camera. Lol. I just plant everything in the ground. I have worked so hard to make the soil healthy. I have dug up several feet. The plants definitely grow larger and expand more freely.
Do you have any videos for soil alternatives?
i use bamboo and amazon boxes cardboard, then shredded paper and cut gras, then river sand or poor soil from anywhere nearby, a bit of forest clean soil (shift it so you only take with you soil plus bacteria and fungus spores) if from nearby some edible mushrooms even better, then some good soil at the surface, plant and some dry grass to top.
Only advice would be to only build one of these if you really like gardening and are going to stick with it, Because Raised beds like these are going to need repairing and replacing of parts and eventually an overhaul in a couple years time so just a heads up to people just staring.
I’ve had this system in place for 7 years. Never replaced or fixed anything
Just saying he looked unchallenged carrying that huge topsoil bag. Must be STRONG. 😳
New sub from me, brother! Keep make awesome content!
I usually use styrofoam and bottles for my garden
Add worm castings each spring the wood will rob nitrogen till it’s balanced
that's very smart 💯
Good ideas but wood takes a lot of nitrogen out of the soil until it starts to rot, which can take a while with some woods especially hard woods I believe. That said I don't have formal education that's just something I've heard and picked up from more experienced people.
Wood near the surface would do that 100% but there’s a big layer of many other things before the wood could actually deprive the compost from nitrogen
Spicy are you doing the SKIP program?
How do you tell the difference between unfinished compost and mature compost?
What’s the difference between compost and top soil? I thought they were the same thing? 👀
Yep. That’s how I got rid of lots of timber and boxes. It all breaks down nicely. I think it even increased the nitrogen levels in the soil.
They are brown compost materials so they guve carbon not nitrogen
It will increase the level of carbon stored in the ground 😊
It's more of a Hochbeet than a real Hügelkultur
Cool, now plant something you can eat!!
Violas are edible… omg
Can we use any plant branches
Looks like it would be a termite bed also with the logs in the bed ? Maybe not
iv seen this layered technique a couple times and I understand that all the organic materials decomposes, but what is the actual reason for doing it in layers could you not jus throw the logs in and then top up with normal soil or compost
Is vermiculiet necessary?
You would be a good weed farmer 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽😅😅😅
Do you really thick logs of wood contribute to your soil...
Just for support i think...
Handsome Lad!
Thank you 🫶
