Hugelkultur 101!

  • This technique it’s a sort of Hugelkultur which means using different materials to layer the bottom part of your raised beds, providing moisture retention, building fertility and a great way to recycle woody debris.
    I usually keep all my old pots with dry plants and roots and use them the next season on one of the layers. Woodchips around your raised bed are optional but ideal to feed the microorganisms in your soil!
    LAYERS:
    - Cardboard if you have weeds or grass at the bottom
    - Hardwood logs (don’t use black lotus, black walnut or old growth redwood)
    - Smaller branches (I used apple tree cuttings)
    - Spoiled Hay or dry leaves
    - Unfinished compost
    - Well rotted / nutrient rich compost
    - Top soil
    - Vermiculite or perlite for aeration and drainage

      Raised beds are beautiful for rentals. I have 9 total, and they are big, but i do have more land as a renter than most, and my landlord is a farmer, he has cows so that does help. But even if I had an apartment, I would try very hard to make this happen

    I like adding greens in layers with the dry, to add in so organic matter to the carbon from the wood.
    Microorganisms need a substrate with similar N:C ratio (~10:1, but this isn't volumetric). That hay's mostly carbon.
    Grass cuttings from parks works great! Maybe even already bagged up for you.
    By adding greens you'll be favouring a healthier microbial activity in the bed, and preventing rot - we want decomposition, so we also get some skow forming compost in the lower layers :)
    I like carboard on top too under a small layer of compost (+ mulch) - I find it helps prevent a lot of weeds from sprouting into the light.

  • @Enchantedlight_20_13_
    @Enchantedlight_20_13_ Před rokem +1

    Yeah i know, very good Motivation with Information vids!
    Cardbord is the best for worms and can be used for saving the parts of the raise bed from scratches of the pokes from the branches and other harder stuff.
    I use pallets covered with cheap aquafoil (0,1mm thick only) and the lot of cardbord for Cover the foil.
    When it Drops down, the foil gets less pressure and stays better in place...
    Have fun!

    Good ideas but wood takes a lot of nitrogen out of the soil until it starts to rot, which can take a while with some woods especially hard woods I believe. That said I don't have formal education that's just something I've heard and picked up from more experienced people.

    • @SpicyMoustache
      @SpicyMoustache  Před rokem

      Wood near the surface would do that 100% but there’s a big layer of many other things before the wood could actually deprive the compost from nitrogen

    And don't forget to cover with hay to keep humidity in the ground. It will also help with frost by keeping the temperature underneath.
