I think it’s important to explain that it’s not like boiling water, it’s hotter and sticks to you.
I have American friends who don’t understand that 100+C is instant hospital level burns, and sugar stays on you like tar.
The problem with thick hot candy is that it will still burn even if you dip your hand in cold water. This is because as soon as you put your hand in, the outer part of the candy will harden and it will protect the inner hot part which is in contact with your skin from cooling down.
I am not an expert but your best bet should be to scrape off as much as possible then dip it in the cold water.

The other thing about sugar burns is that when you get in contact with burning sugar you can’t really remove it easily in the moment because it’s molten sticky stuff, so the burn gets worse because you’re forced to stay in contact with longer😭 I don’t envy your dad, he’s a champion

Yeah, I thought it was going to be something like "accidentally getting some water in the batch and all of it crystalizing". BTW - if you use wooden spoons for candy making, those spoons can't be even a little damp. I wrecked so much caramel popcorn using a slightly damp spoon

kind of reminds me of baking too. It’s harder to get third degree burns from it but the most common one among chefs and bakers is the oven rack burn on the wrist and the oven door burn on near the elbow. I have them, my mom has them and a lot of bakers and chefs have them.

@@bananabreadloaf I think they meant heat
I dont understand that. She said he’s gotten burns and stuff from 130* candy (and went to a hospital from 3rd degree burns). I had 350* metal pressed into me, and i thought it was a normal burn, no hospital needed. I still have feeling on the giant scars, despite it looking like a lion’s claws had a go at my arm
@@-Sober- I guess it's probably time, a hot iron pressed for a short amount of time vs sticky candy you can't remove
@@-Sober- Molten candy sticks to flesh. You can't really remove it like a metal bar, just endure it until it's mostly removed and cools down. Prolonged exposure to lower temps can cause more damage than short term exposure to higher temps. Like how you don't get hurt from touching 1,300 degree lava rock if you're just touching it and pulling away, and not pressing your finger into it. Now if you held onto it for 5 minutes you wouldn't have a hand anymore.
@@-Sober- The candy is liquid and liquid conducts heat faster than solids, for example, if you put your hand into a bucket of boiling water for 0.1 seconds its gonna be way worse than if you held incandescent iron for 0.5 secs, even though the iron is hundreds of times hotter

Oh man that's kinda graphic, but really illustrates just how bad it is
I think its kinda cute that the worst mistake you could make isnt to ruin the candy, its if you accidentally hurt yourself. Idk i just think thats lovely.
Edit: I realise this makes no sense. I was trying to say that i like how they appreciate the people more than just what they can do. I am shit at words, very sorry.
I’d rather ruin candy that get injured
When the priorities are good
Ah yes, third degree burns. *lovely*
I mean, candy is candy. It's replaceable very easily. It's very different for injuries because it takes time to heal and hurts way more than some candy.
I don't get it how's that cute
Your dad sounds like a brave man. Your lucky to have him.
Why do I want to eat it when it’s half liquid and half set it looks like a nice chewy sweet lolly
oh damn… that must be painful 🥲
edit: thank u Tina for making it 11k and dam that’s a lot of likes 😰🤍
With a 3rd degree burn the burn dose not hurt because the nerve endings have been burnt but I heard the skin around it will
@@Operator_Pirate yeah a 2nd degree is more painful as the nerve endings arent burnt by that
There's 3 levels of Burns. 1st degree is just a Red rash with a painfully annoying sting and itch. A 2nd degree is a type of burn that hurts, gets a blister and gets irritated around the skin. Advice Don't pop the blister it'll make it worse. Then there's a 3rd degree, these are painless. The burned part is a layer of dead skin and is usually black/dark purple. This indicates that the skin is burned to death. At first it hurts but then it stops. Around the dead skin is a circle of irritation and red skin. This can sting. The best way to treat 3rd degree is put something room temperature on it and move to the ER instantly. If not there's a chance you can completely numb that part of the body/skin. Which is dangerous.

"You're not really a candy maker if you don't have the burns to show it"
That's a horrible rule.
I mean, same as most cooks having cuts on their hands. Of course you wouldn't have it if you always payed perfect attention, but nobody is able to do that and if you deal with a certain danger so many times then the law of probability just says that it will hapoen sometime.
I mean, if it's your first time doing it. Ain't no way u ain't getting burnt
To the two replies here, to say someone isn't truly who they are solely because they have never gotten hurt or marked up from what they do, that is a terrible thing to say and so horribly disrespectful and incorrect. Being a candy maker means you make candy, and not all candy is made like the ones these people make. You don't need to have hurt yourself to be a "real" candy maker, a real candy maker is someone who makes candy through any means, plain and simple as that.
My respect for these people has dropped for stating such a thing.
Edit: Misspelled a word
@@midnitethedsixl4601 I never said they weren't truly who they are, but everyone's first time at anything something is bound to go wrong. Now burns heal. Even third degree. So even if they've been burnt they may have nothing to show for it anyway

Sad to hear. My 15 year old brother just got a second degree burning on his right (and main) hand recently, all the way from his biceps down to his wrist, his skin got absolutely destroyed. A pipe of boiling water exploded directly on him, good thing he moved so the water touched only his hand...

The candy will stick to you and make the burns worse
This reminds me- when I was in 4th grade we had a stem room with hot glue guns. I was trying to glue something small so it was hard to hold and keep steady. I had to hold it cuz I didn’t want it to stick to the table so I put the glue on, but my thumb got to close and a huge piece of glue got on my hand. I did everything to try and get it off before it dried but it dried first and it made the burn a lot worse. I ran tot eh nearest bathroom and ran my hand under the cold water. I went to the nurse and she gave me an ice pack. The ice pack barely helped and my friend asked” what would happen without the ice pack?” So I gave it to her but in the first 3 seconds my eyes started tearing up in pain and she gave it right back. My other friend burned her hand too so once my ice pack was fully melted we went to the high school nurse to get that burn cream stuff. By the time I was on the bus there was already a huge blister on my thumb. It was filled with fluid and was really uncomfortable and painful so my mom asked if she could pop it for me. And being a fourth grader who was afraid of needles I said NO! Then it hurt so bad I asked her to do and I was was screaming and I was like “ mom come on just do it.” Then she was like “I already did it.” And I didn’t feel it at all cuz it was so big. It hurt a lot, but no as much and it made me feel better. I will never forget this moment😊

Burns make me sick, I've had a few very close calls in commercial kitchens that really helped give me proper perspective on what a bad burn injury can do. The worst was accidentally dousing my hand in steam when it instantly formed and I was too close - you can't escape a gaseous burn because it gets into every angle of your skin. Still minor, mostly 1st with a few 2nd degree spots, but again, it was more about gaining perspective on how bad they can be.
