I don't think we can overstate how much of a monster Oden was.
1. He went toe-to-toe with Kaido, and it's heavily implied that he would have won if he weren't distracted by Higurashi.
2. He clashed with PRIME WHITEBEARD and took a punch that looked deadlier than the one that WB crushed Akainu with. He got up and smiled.
3. Roger hit him with Divine Departure - an attack so powerful that Shanks used it to one shot Kid AND Killer at once - and Oden just ran right back at him, more mildly annoyed than hurt.
What an absolute beast.
It’s not implied he would have won. Idk where y’all got that info from. The fight could go any direction. Oden left a deep impression on Kaido and a scar but Kaido also only used Dragon form most of the fight and WHEN everything was gonna escalate between them Momo taken hostage happened. The fight was interrupted; Oden showed no edge over Kaido ‘cause as stated by Kaido being able to hurt him only gets you to the league of great men level, hierarchy not specified. Mind you, only Oden from the list of people Kaido imagines when thinking about who can fight him during the confrontation with Luffy wasn’t added yet (and him getting added to that list is the result of their battle) by the time of their fight. Meaning he likely already considered himself to be in the same league with Roger, Xebec, Wb judging by strength. Thus the argument about Kaido getting stronger over the years has no basis but he still showed more battle prowess and flexibility against the alien CE than he did against Oden. Not a fan of Oden myself but I’ve got no intention to downplay him and say he was weak. He could defeat Kaido. Kaido could defeat him as well. That is why Kaido is shown to have ptsd when his battle with Luffy is interrupted in the first place. Because he was challenged by a dangerous opponent but didn’t protect the champion’s belt. Like he wasn’t allowed to by fate.
That true kaido never went hybrid on oden.
@@user-ki8xd2wi3xhe knocked Kaido down to base form with one attack and gravely injured him. The only other time that happened was when Luffy used Bajrang gun to defeat Kaido in ep 1076. He’s the only one to break through Kaido’s skin with no prior damage (Zoro also cut through him, but that was only because he cut the spot where Oden cut). Also, the difference between Paradise Waterfall and Bajrang Gun is that Luffy had to use the entirety of his energy reserve and haki to do it, whereas Oden could use his move repeatedly. If he wasn’t distracted, Oden would have won.
@@The-fs5wn bullshit. The fight was basically two hits. One from Oden which injured Kaido. One from Kaido who hit the distracted Oden and basically won after that the unfair way. Oden did make a movement like going for the kill but that was him thinking and not Oda stating. Nothing implies the fight would have ended after Oden's second hit or even that it would have definitely connected. Instead Oden lost after getting hit one time. Kaido did benefit from Higurashi acting as Momo being taken hostage. But Kaido too took that first strike with his usual attitude of "come on, try to pierce my skin", so...
I say Oda didn't spend enough time on that fight because it wasn't the main focus of the flashback and it already was long. That's why he was okay with animators prolonging their battle a little and showing them being equal. If you didn't notice, it was a flashback to develop Oden's character, not Kaido's and I won't let you say it doesn't show. Especially with how little development Kaido got at all.

Personally I think yes because unlike with roger he used both advance armament and advance conquerors haki to fight roger I do bet he could have done a similar attack like divine departure but doesn’t do it since he is gauging how strong is oden.
Of course he held back. Look at Marineford. Yes WB was far out of his prime at Marineford but look at the incredible amount of damage he alone did to the island. Here he is in his prime and he didn't even release any island shaking type of attacks.
