Also, just to clarify, I do the middle-click on researches to see the complexity and glance through the general depth of what it does: a ton of manufacturing, something to progress plot, a research fork, etc. I don't really look into what exactly is being unlocked as I consider that cheating. Some folks might disagree, but that's my take on it. As such I'm not terrible interested from veterans what I should be aiming for. What happens happens!
I always find it funny when openxcom mods have a bajillion different types of guns in them. Seems kind of silly in a setting where conventional firearms are the weapons you throw away at the earliest opportunity in favor of lasers or plasma or magnetic or whatever.
A lot of folks like to have their favourite guns specifically in a mod, but personally I'm quite happy with it all being generic "rifle" and "minigun." If I want to pretend it's a Red Ryder carbine action two-hundred shot range rifle then so be it. Cuts down on the bloat labeling it generically, and yeah - feels less odd ditching such a specific IRL weapon for a generic fantasy one. Some mods take it further and adopt a laser / plasma variant modeled after an IRL counterpart. Nice and creative, but again: bloat. A bit of bias since I'm not a gun guy, though.
Tactical variety
Standardisation is a thing in real militaries for a reason. And given how you're right - ballistics aren't worth a crap compared to plasma in XCOM games - that's why there aren't 5200 different guns.
That said, having other forces - civilians, police, military - use different kit isn't necessarily a bad thing either.
And I wouldn't be adverse to the aliens researching human gear either and deploying with stuff like smoke grenades (there's a Brutal AI sourcemod that knows how to use them)

@@ClosetYeti having gun bloat is both dev and player faults. Sometimes I really want to see my tacticool 5.56x45mm NATO HK416 assault rifle in the game without labeling "Assault Rifle" hahaha. And more often, a player comes and directly requests that rifle. And I won't lie, we all know it's a bit redundant if we already have other 6 rifles with similar stats and the same ammo.
I really like seeing IRL guns with some fancy-shmancy high tech stuff, turning them into a laser or plasmas variant. My stuff is full of those for that very reason. 🤭
The timing cant be more perfect, started watching your x-com files again after a hiatus for a long while and want to finish looking though all that and this comes up!

The night mission reminds me of one of my favorite original XCOM moments ever.
Night mission, trying to find downed ship. A sectoid, psionic attacks one of my guys. He panics and randomly shoots into the dark, and promptly hits and kills a different sectoid that i didn't know was there.

Oooh, The big Dish thingy on the Skyrader would mean that it probably has a bigger radar range than other craft. I assume this because it kinda looks like an older style of AWACS aircraft, which are basically big ole radar arrays in the sky.

my favorite part of any xcom playthrough is how optimistic it is with everyone already having "the first" in their names. We know it, they know it.... but everyone is going to die at the very least, once.
Really it becomes a race to X. Afterwards, maybe holding at "just X" for as long as possible.

The Research Project Information section of the ufopedia gains new pages when you unlock new research, it's worth checking it every so often for some details about what a research project will actually get you.

Hory shieeet, X-COM! Fun fact: I'm playing a Files campaign for a year irl now. I'm at the stage when I have 5k elerium, 3 bases stacked with helix knights and psions and I pretty much roflstomp everything with sectopods and blaster bombs and shoot down every UFO right up to very large and- guess what- nothing happens.
After two playthroughs, I can say that four things make or break the game: shotgun with slugs, then blackops sniper, then magma power armor and finally turbolaser sniper. When you get the last two, you've basically won.
I'm so glad to find this in my subscription list!

To track all UFO you gonna need several bases. Just put large radar on them. Also one base put all research. And one base: all manufacturing.

I think I like World of Terrifying Silence more (at least at the start) because it just seem so much more thematic compared to this mod. It really made you feel like you were this new organization trying to patrol the oceans and you're totally out of your depth (heh).
TWoTS is a fantastic mod, but when I last played the camouflage most armour had rendered most aliens effectively blind. The mid- to late-game was kinda lackluster. Wonder if it's updated much...

Hi there Yeti, can you please help me. I was watching your XCOM Playlist. And now I want to play this too. When I install the Mod in your discription. Its not the same start that you have. For example when i set may first base I have a full base and a lot of ships but no hanger. Thanks in advance.
I found the answer. I only had OpenXcom but you need OpenXcom extended. It was a bug. The Mod folder is called standard instead of Mods. Thanks for making those videos. I have a lot of fun watching how cool you deal with the XCOM bullshit.
