- In this mini-series I'm building a close board feather-edge fence. This video covers mending a gate post, building the gates, understanding how to brace a gate to prevent sagging and attaching hinges. For a first attempt, I'm really happy with how the fence turned out.
Relationship with Evolution
It feels a bit odd to get free stuff but I made sure prior to accepting that there was no commitment to making a video or review and hence why I've not mentioned it before now. I had been planning on buying an Evolution mitre saw when I came across the Parkside in Lidl so I was keen to try it out and I think it's a good fit for viewers of the channel. This isn't a sponsorship or paid promotion but the links below to Evolution tools are affiliate. I've checked other sellers and the Evolution site seems to be equal or less £ than others (but do look around). You can use this link with the code 'ALIDYMOCK5 ' to get a 5% discount on any product: shop.evolutionpowertools.com/...
Below are the tools and materials used for the whole project, not just this video. The timber, postcrete and arris brackets came from countrysupplies.uk.com/ (deliver 40 mile radius around High Wycombe in SE England).

EVOMS - Great source for information. When you are approaching a DIY job and have little or no experience in the task, this type of guidance (i.e. being able to actually SEE the theory and techniques being applied) is extremely valuable. CZcams put to its best use, and a great example of one persons learning curve shortening that of others. Thank you.
EVOMS - thanks Ali, for this and all the detail and lessons you're passing on to us DIYers. May your channel and success continue to grow. Cheers.
EVOMS - Brilliantly timed series as I'm about to launch into fencing around our extension to our kitchen garden. I watched fencers at the local building site putting up fences and making it look very easy. But your series actually tells me what I really need to do! Thanks.
EVOMS - Found your channel last weekend and have since binged watched the whole of the garden room series as we are currently clearing the ground to build one in our own garden, albeit with a pitched roof. Admire your attention to detail and the research that you do, and enjoyed watching your skills evolve as the project progressed. Like most posters would love the EVO saw but, for now, the content of your videos is the most important thing - keep 'em comin'!
EVOMS Really enjoying this series. I love the fact you recycled the existing post. I used a cheap table saw for half lap joints on my gate, but it’s tough doing the laps at the midpoint.
EVOMS - Great tips and explanations, as always. I’ve been using my brothers mitre/chop saw to build a garden room over the last few months so it’s about time I had my own so he can have his back! 😀 Your garden room series was very useful to me. Keep it up
EVOMS. Loving the mini series on your garden fence project Ali. I'm glad to see you are putting in as much detail as you did with the garden room videos 👍
EVOMS - love how detailed each video you make is. Have watched your workshop series over and over - I'm about to start building a small shed as practice run for building our garden home office
EVOMS - Your videos are amazing!! They're really in depth with great explanations. I'll be using your videos for my garden room and fence this summer!! Thanks for the hard work, keep it up.
EVOMS Another great video. I always like how you include your mistakes and how you fixed the issue. Makes me feel better when I make an error knowing I'm not the only one. Looking forward to more in your series.
EVOMS loved your garden room series and enjoying this one too, right balance of entertainment and information for anyone looking to tackle projects themselves like me! Saw would be very handy for that!
EVOMS I didn't think I'd enjoy the gates videos as much as your others, but actually so far I have. Given me some ideas of my own project. Thanks.
EVOMS - Really useful video as always Ali. My partner and I have just bought our first house so I'm finally able to put all I learn from your videos into practice. Thanks
EVOMS - Enjoying this series as much as I did the garden room build. Always very detailed which is great.
EVOMS. I love the detail you go into in all your videos, your garden room series is my go to videos whilst I’m planning a workshop 👍
EVOMS I am so jealous of the way your garden backs out into the woodlands ❤️
Nice job on the gates 👍
EVOMS as usual great detail and explanation in the videos, also really glad you are continuing on to other topics now the garden room is basically complete.
EVOMS
Love your detail mate, thanks to your effort and patience!! Keep it up and looking forward to the next one!
EVOMS - thanks for this series Ali, really helpful as I am about to embark on a similar project. Great that you mention mistakes you make along the way so others can avoid - top class !
EVOMS started my garden room build following watching your series. Love your videos, already looking forward to part 3 of the fencing vids
EVOMS - really enjoying this and your previous garden room series. Have taken plenty of tips away especially from the garden room and hope to put some of them to use in my upcoming garage conversion project
EVOMS! Loving your vids. Looking forward to seeing how the refurb develops, and hopefully the garden room finsihed off too!
EVOMS - yes, agree with others that you’re very good at explaining the process. I probably won’t be building a gate or fence anytime soon but loved the garden room series!
EVOMS - Great vid again Ali. Love your attention to detail and the information you give on all the projects. Got a load of 4x2s to cut soon to make some garden furniture and the Evo saw would be perfect! All the best
EVOMS - both your garden building and this fencing series are very well explained and presented. Thanks
EVOMS love how in depth your vids are. Keep them coming 👍🏻👍🏻
EVOMS - your videos have been a godsend as I'm currently building a garden room/shed, very useful indeed!
EVOMS - another great series, I’m about to set myself to building a man cave/workshop combo replacing the growing kids trampoline with a den for them and a workshop for me. Your videos are just great and I love the technical bits as I really learn something rather than just learning how to dream! But first things first I need to redo my fencing (man cave needs a secure garden....) thanks again
EVOMS - This video is great, I've been following you since you first started.... I was going to go for a garden building (How I originally found your channel) but opted to convert half of my garage (preserving valuable garden space!)! That said, I am doing some fencing and making my own gate in the next month or so so this video is SPOT ON!. Love your technical explanations mate. Very engaging and encouraging - Keep up the good work
EVOMS - Another informative video. I've got a gate to replace, feeling more confident that my approach will work now with the hints from this video.
EVOMS - The garden office is almost clad and now moving on to building a fence so really useful to have these videos
EVOMS - Another excellent video Ali. Your explanations and DIY’er logic are quite frankly the best I’ve come across on CZcams. Keep it up. Would love the Evo saw - my next project in the next couple of months will be a lean-to pergola against the house. Not having built such a large timber structure before, I’m sure the Evo will make things a whole lot easier for me!
EVOMS - great video as always. Like the fact, that you're honest about your mistakes, so we can all (hopefully) avoid them.
EVOMS. Always spot on info and entertaining at the same time. Great job 👍
EVOMS - love it especially when this type of quality content is made in the UK..keep them coming brother
EVOMS - Loving the content. Can’t wait for the last part in the fence/gate building series.
EVOMS Starting my garden office build later in the year. Using your vids every step of the way. Many thanks! 👍
EVOMS - Great content as always and appreciate the time you take to explain every aspect. Very educational
EVOMS Another cracking video mate. I’m looking to start a garden room like the one you did at your old house and this would help a lot. Thanks for the very informative vids, they’re appreciated. All the best, Russ.
EVOMS. Please keep making these, they are invaluable to the even more casual DIY er!
EVOMS - Garage gym build about to begin my stud work journey. Really found your channel massively helpful. Particularly the insulation and stud work on the summer room build you did. Thanks - keep great content coming
EVOMS Great videos, been watching since the garden room, and now this pops up along with the gate video just as I need to do the same in a couple of weeks
EVOMS Really enjoying this series and loving the new place, what a spot!
EVOMS - and many thanks for the informative content which has me feeling I could possibly tackle some stuff I would previously have considered beyond me
EVOMS - great video, I’m in the process of planning my garden room build, your videos have been very useful 👍🏼
EVOMS so happy seeing what you are up too ! keep up the good work
EVOMS - just love the details you go into in your series, keep them coming 👍
EVOMS - Love your diligent approach to DIY, looking forward to part 3.
EVOMS - Thanks Ali, constantly quality content with so much detail. Keep it up!
EVOMS :) Got to make a gate this weekend, so this is a timely series! Thank you.
EVOMS - just finished my garden room thanks to this channel.
EVOMS - Been following since the garden room series. Brilliant channel. Glad your back.
EVOMS - Thank you for a great video lesson on adding to a post height and building your own gate. You’ve helped me on how to build a good strong shed base for my beach hut project, and what bolts to use to secure to the dense blocks (still yet to buy the bolts, but thank you again for link and responding to my message). This is my next job as my gate posts are rotten. The EVO Mitre Saw would help me enormously as only have a good old fashioned hand saw.
EVOMS - really enjoying this series. Very thorough as always!
EVOMS - Long time subscriber and fan of your work. Always so detailed and well thought out. Best of luck with the rest of the work on the new house!
Thanks Paul!
EVOMS, really like your videos they are very easy to follow, im about to start an outside building project and found your step by step guide very helpful, it answered alot of questions I had.
EVOMS. Great video Ali! I need to replace a sagging back gate, and this has given me the confidence to attempt it myself.
EVOMS quality video with loads of fantastic information as usual. Thanks for sharing!
EVOMS. Going to start my garden room build next month and this would be so helpful working on my own. Great video yet again, great idea to extend that post
EVOMS. Used your garden room videos to build my garden room. I feel like I’ll be doing my fence soon based on these new videos
EVOMS! Loving the informative videos with clear guidance and reasoning. Keep it up :)
EVOMS Yet again another excellent detailed build video. Well done Ali it's looking great.
EVOMS Love all your videos, best bit is they show you don't have to be scared of DIY. Plus there well explained..... I'll be starting my Garden office late this year.
Exactly. Mistakes happen, but nearly all can be solved with a bit of thought!
EVOMS - another super video, very informative as always and I love the style with you commenting on the video, makes for much better audio!
EVOMS- great series and lots of great tips and info.... planning new fencing myself, just need a good mitre saw to help with the job!
EVOMS, Thank you for your videos, very informative and a pleasure to watch.
You’re so good at explaining each step and I’m needing to replace part of my fence and twin gates. Other YTers just say “this is how”, but then don’t explain why. Your explanations mean that I can make my projects based on my situation. Thank you :)
That’s great that they resonate with you!
Really excellent! Well worth a watch! Like the fact that things don’t always go to plan as they often don’t ! 🙏🏼
Glad you enjoyed Peter. Indeed, I'm not sure whether professionals have quite so many issues but hopefully it's encouraging to others that most errors can be solved :)
EVOMS - Always frightens me when CZcams seems to know what I’m looking for. I’ve been watching lots of garden house videos, but I have a project to move the garden fence/gate forward so my side door is in the garden and not the drive. I haven’t researched or watched any videos regarding this, so saw part two which caught my eye. My plan is to put a 25/75 gate for flexibility. Great video 👍🏼
EVOMS - Another great video Ali! Taking so may tips from all your vids keep up the good work!
I enjoy the approach you take in explaining each project. Well done. EVOMS
EVOMS - thanks for the great content Really interesting to follow your builds and approach to solving challenges (problems)!
EVOMS - I do love these vidoes, the way they are explained and then shown really help me understand what to do in situations like these. would love to see you do a set about pergolas or gazebos after your fence and workshop is is done.
Evoms what a fantastic bit of kit and love watching your channel keep up with the good work
EVOMS Love the videos. Helped me immensely when looking into whether or not I needed building regulations approval or planning permission for our garden office. Hoping to have ours finished by the end of July but looking more like middle of August, around the same time our second baby is due. Poor planning on my part but will provide me with some much needed office space. Keep up the good work, the level of detail you go into is easy to follow.
EVOMS - Great detailed videos to learn so much DIY tricks from! Would love the Evo Mitre Saw to complete some of my DIY projects at home :) keep up the good work Ali!
EVOMS - Keep it up mate, your videos always go into so much detail👍 quality as always
EVOMS - Watched all your work Ali, the Garden room was extremely informative. So this Vid is all EVO!.. EVO-lution and EVO-stik.. Lol... Fantastic grounds of your new house and tonnes of potential for building content for us to enjoy. Cheers Ali. Chris Jones 👍
EVOMS - I love your vids, really good at explaining how to actually make stuff!
EVOMS halfway through my garden workshop build, your videos are a godsend!
EVOMS - Another great video at just the right time for building a shed door. Thanks.
Nice to see you back. I definitely will be doing a side gate build.
EVOMS Ali I love your videos They’re very informative and well edited. A real pleasure to watch. Looking forward to the next instalment
Thanks buddy!
EVOMS Great set of videos. House hunting at the moment and one of the criteria is definitely a garden suitable for me to have a go at building my own garden room!
EVOMS - another very informative video and the new house looks awesome!
EVOMS currently planning my garden room/workshop. Your videos have been invaluable!
EVOMS - was looking for one at the moment so this would be ideal! Really helpful and informative videos!
Evoms. Loved the garden room series now watching the fence series, brilliant as ever.
EVOMS Just planning my workshop and garden room projection. A mitre saw is going to be a necessity. Lots of inspiration and ideas from your previous build series. I know even may tackle a new gate too!
EVOMS excellent series of video’s my ‘go to’ for great content.
EVOMS - I'll need that win with all the ideas you're putting in my head with these videos 😁
EVOMS - great video, as usual! Especially appreciate the info in the video description!
EVOMS. Great stuff, Ali. I think I'm gonna wander down memory lane and have another look at the Garden Room series. It was only last year I built mine but it seems so long ago...! Best aye!
EVOMS - awesome series so far looking forward to the final episode!!
Useful recording. I've been watching the garden room ones. I need to construct a gate after the summer house is done!
Discovered your channel last night (21/7/20) love your content. My partner and I have just purchased a house and we need to do a bit of work, build fences and summerhouse/storage shed. I’ve found your advice to be practical and easy to follow. Keep the content coming....😀
Thanks Andrew and welcome! Congrats on your home purchase :)
EVOMS This would be perfect timing to help build my timber framed outbuilding😁. You’ve inspired me to build my own external doors too - perfect tutorials, thank you.
EVOMS - loving your videos, full of helpful tips and tricks
EVOMS - your'e doing a great job and have an excellent delivery in terms of theory and practical
EVOMS - Im currently purchasing my first house with my girlfriend and it is a bit of a fixer-upper. But looking forward to getting a workshop together to do it all myself, learn a bunch, and be proud of my home. So thank you for your videos! they have been a big help for me to know how to tackle these problems when they come (replacing the double gate on the drive is job no1), and hopefully in the future i can contribute my garden shed story to your website! :)
