  • I designed and built this engine to replace the single acting Mamod one on Traction engine and steam rollers.
    It puts the cylinder inboard in a more realist position.
    I don't have a Mamod engine but am now building my own version as the engine runs so well.
    Big thanks to Retro SteamTech channel for giving me some dimentions of a Mamod roller.

    Superb control you have with that engine 👍👍👍 I for one would very much like to see the rest of the roller build. Oh, thanks for the shout out 🙂 Cheers, Alan.

    Had an SR1 when I was a kid, about 60 years ago and could see potential for improvements even then! Would greatly appreciate seeing your version!

    I'd like to see videos of the new roller. The engine runs nicely. May I suggest an instrument chain / sprocket drive to the axle rather than the "spring belt" drive the Mamod rollers had? Cheers!

    • @myfordboy
      @myfordboy  Před 7 měsíci

      Yes. I have a couple of ideas for the drive without the spring belt.

      @@myfordboy I'd definitely be interested. I still have my childhood TE1 traction engine from the 1960s and this might make a really good upgrade.

    Very nicely done, I'm sure it will turn out as good as the rest of your creations and look forward to seeing it . Just a quick question, have you ever thought of making a vacuum engine ? I find them quite interesting, but I don't have the facilities to make anything at the moment due to a big upheaval in life .

    Hi, what would be a good beginner project for a metal lathe?

    • @myfordboy
      @myfordboy  Před 7 měsíci

      A good start would be a simple ocsillator or wobbler engine.

  • @keldsor
    @keldsor Před 7 měsíci +1

    HI - can I ask you WHY you use this alloy zinc/alu and please tell me how much of each you use !

    • @myfordboy
      @myfordboy  Před 7 měsíci +1

      The alloy makes a good flywheel as it is nearly as heavy as iron. It casts well at 500C.Can be machined to a bright finish.
      I buy it in ready made ingots. It is 12 % Al.

    • @keldsor
      @keldsor Před 7 měsíci

      @myfordboy OK - I was planning to make it myself ... I have a lot of both metals on the shelf.
      If that's posible - I think melting the ALU first and the add the zinc and more heat when needed to melt around 500°C - do you think that's a path to follow ?

    • @myfordboy
      @myfordboy  Před 7 měsíci +1

      I have never made my own alloys but that sounds ok to me. Data sheet:www.artisanfoundry.co.uk/product_data_sheets/Zinc_Alloy_ZL12.pdf

    Greets from Ukraine, Kharkov. Please tell me, how you fix caps on cylinder, they glued to cylinder, or something else? In video this moment dont show((

    • @myfordboy
      @myfordboy  Před 7 měsíci

      Hope you are safe. The end cap is soft soldered on and the cap with the gland is secured with Loctite retainer. The Loctite seal can be broken with heat if it ever needs removing.
