Soutzoukakia - Greek Meatballs in Tomato Sauce

- Greek meatballs in tomato sauce, or Soutzoukakia as we call them in Greek, have a long oval shape compared to usual round meatballs. The key ingredients are cumin, garlic and bread soaked in wine first. They are very soft, full of flavour and come with a thick and tasty tomato sauce.
Try the Greek Meatballs with some rice or mashed potatoes and you will have everyone asking for the recipe! These are also freezable after cooking and will last for a couple of months in the freezer. Just defrost the meatballs and warm them up in a pot or microwave for a few minutes before serving.

Someone commented on Greek meatballs being a Turkish invention. I think they are right. I read somewhere it started in Izmir , Turkey( close to Greece). Wonder why rarely egg added to meat to bind the recipe?
Perhaps that's right, who really knows. The two countries have so many similar dishes, either by name or by looks, and are both known for their delicious food. Take cabbage rolls or stuffed grape leaves for example, there are so many variations in Eastern Europe, West Asia and North African countries. As for the egg, we don't add any when making soutzoukakia but when making meatballs (biftekia) we do add one to bind the ingredients.
I found this nice article that says more about the dish's history. It's quite interesting if you fancy reading it www.bbc.com/travel/article/20230228-soutzoukakia-the-greek-meatballs-packed-with-history
