Hackwing: A Square Blackwing Pencil

- Graphite and wood; a pencil is a very simple thing. However, there is nothing quite like the Blackwing pencil’s iconic quality and design.
Four times a year, special Blackwing pencil sets (called "Blackwing Volumes") are released that celebrate creative people, events, and ideas. I decided to make my own set to pay homage to Norm Abram, called the "Blackwing Volume 936", a reference to the 936 square foot workshop Norm used while filming most of "The New Yankee Workshop".
Norm Abram is a distinguished woodworker that is part of an esteemed few that inspired a generation of makers and DIYers. His attention to detail and knowledge of all the aspects of good woodworking practices makes him revered and beloved among the woodworking community. To mirror his commitment to craftsmanship, I designed this pencil to showcase some of his tenets.
Every woodworker knows that to end up with a quality project, you have to start with quality materials. That means lumber that is square, straight, and true; these pencils showcase that notion with their unique square profile. Likewise, the adage "measured twice, cut once" is something you have to ignore just once to appreciate, so I've included a debossed 6" rule on each pencil so you'll always have a ruler close at hand.
I also wanted to see how I could make this video stand out, so I used a very narrow aspect ratio. Everything was filmed with this horizontal vantage in mind. It might be cool or annoying, but it was something fun to try to work into a video.
*** This is not at all sponsored or endorsed by Blackwing. A "Hackwing" uses spare parts from a Blackwing pencil as an enhancement for other pencils. This allows for customizations and modifications that are suited to specific applications.

That is quite the aspect ratio. I can't even tell if I like it or not. It's...interesting.
It’s something I recently learned that CZcams could support so this was really a project as an excuse to see how it would work. I’m with you though, it’s a weird thing that’s neat at first but the novelty wears off pretty quickly. Definitely won’t be doing it again hahah.
it fits so well I didn't even notice till I read your comment.
@@dogedoo3000 me too
I feel like the only thing it’s missing is “fin” at the end.
Nooooooooo. Bad aspect ratio, I thought my computer was busted lol!
But good video!!!
This was cinematic... I feel like I was watching an award-winning short film.
At first I kept trying to scroll up before I full screened. And then by the end I had completely forgotten the aspect ratio until I read the description. Pretty cool!
I know this will annoy a lot of people haha
Came to say this exact thing. Extreme-wide aspect ratio videos always have me constantly trying to scroll up, but with this one after a few seconds it just felt natural because of the subject matter and way it was shot. This is actually a great example of a non-awkward way to use experimental aspect ratios.
Brilliant. I think I’m going to steal the notion of impacting a ruler into a work pencil. Such a simple solution to that constant need.
I was so sad you painted over the wood, until I saw the ruler
You’re ridiculous..... in the BEST possible way. ❤️
feels like I'm watching a western
Your videos are worth every waiting day. Thank you !
Very good
Awesome! I'm sure Norm would be proud!! I so miss the New Yankee Workshop! It made my Saturday for years! They've never been the same. But he was largely the reason I got into woodworking.
Love the ruler on the side and great subject for this aspect ratio!
RIP to the people watching this on mobile in portrait mode.
You sir, are my hero. That was awesome.
Definitely gonna need a set of two for these guys. One for measures, one for marks.
Love it
Your editing skills are amazing, and I LOVE the aspect ratio. Keep it up. 👍🏽
I love your videos! It is always so satisfying to watch
I'm new to your channel and I immediately know I am missing out! What an aspect ratio, too. I feel like I'm watching a video from the Apple website.
well done!
The "how" was commendable. The "why" is rather less clear. But I have a great idea for you... make a Blackwing extender so I don't have to throw my best pencils away when they've got a lot of writing left. All the marketplace extenders work for round erasers only. Ideally, it would have a Blackwing eraser holder on its back end...
not exactly what you're asking, as you still have to take the ferrule off, but it does have the Blackwing clip on there. www.etsy.com/listing/817912292/adjustable-tip-eraser-pencil-extender?ref=shop_home_active_63&crt=1
Hi Measured Workshop! Missing your videos! Hope all is well! Merry Christmas!
I genuinely appreciate that! I took a long hiatus, working on house projects more than anything else. But I'm back in the workshop lately trying to finish up some projects that were at 75% done, so expect some new videos in the coming weeks! Thanks so much again!
This deserves appreciation. That said, and in the most humble spirit of suggestion~
please, try the Cedar _Ticonderoga._ lol.
That’s awesome how you add the measurements scale to the side. Learned something really cool thank you. Did you make the scale or buy it?
It’s actually harder than you might think to find a ruler that’s EMBOSSED versus DEBOSSED these days, but I managed to find one that had the markings embossed. I used that to make the marking jig.
This aspect ratio triggers my claustrophobia something fierce.
brilliant. What did you use to take off the ferrules? I can't find anything that won't scrape them up.
The new Blackwing Volumes 5x5 (The Ruler Pencil)
Finish: Yellow Spray Paint and Black Magic Marker
Imprint: Gold
Ferrule: Gold
Graphite: Extra Firm
👌🏻
I spent 10 minutes trying to "fix" this video's aspect ratio before I realized it was intentional, LOL.
r/TIHI
Not to be that guy but where did this guy go, it's been a year?!?! Loved this content
I appreciate that so much! I promise I have some things in the works. Just took a looooong hiatus to get some house projects done, and those aren't really interesting to film or watch anyway. Keep an eye out soon!
Got a new phone and the aspect ration is beautiful
:57 This seems like a LOOOOOT of work for a pencil. 4:58 - well I'm f*cking INVESTED now. Carry on.
Wait, how do you mark the measurements on your workpiece when the pencil is the ruler??? ;)
❤🙌✍
This was the perfect aspect ratio for my 4:1 screen. Awesome. Just the neck strain from looking too much from left to right and vice versa was a bit much.
I.. just have a simple question in mind.. wh why?
Read the description ;) Plus, square pencils don't roll off a table, keeping the graphite safe :)
@@pjmasterzz oh thanks that explains a lot
Had the same question, although I read the description as suggested, I still do ask WHY?
Don't worry about aspect, people thought they were getting "less" when letterboxing was introduced to 4:3 televisions, they just didn't realize that 4:3 (1.33:1) is actually a crop of 1.85:1 or 2.35:1 :-)
Can u provide update and details on your raised garden?
I see that there were no closed captions for this video
There was no dialog. Why would there be closed captions?
the only people who would like this aspect ratio are the people who watch videos on mobile... I can't even finish this vid...
Okay.
Do you talk in any of your videos? You have great content but it would be nice if you explained some of the things you are doing.
Странное соотношение сторон в видео
I kinda dislike this ratio... Sure it's nice, assuming it's a large (4k?) ratio, but watching it on a normal FullHD screen in fullscreen gives those gigantic black areas above and below the video, so that's a downside (It also looks hilarious in non-fullscreen as CZcams makes the player fit the dimensions, so the height is relatively small)
It seem uncomfortable to hold that pencil and write it on paper but it was nice though
This would not be used for just sitting and writing a letter. This seems specifically for use in a workshop. Square pencils are less likely to roll away.
Why
why tho :D
Now you aren‘t allowed to write with them anymore. You can‘t use art to do everyday jobs :0
У нас говорят: " Когда коту делать нечего он одно место лижет".
this aspect ratio hurts my eyes
WHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHY!?
?????????????????????
Blackwings are extremely overpriced. I prefer Tombows, which are merely hugely overpriced.
Waste of time.
Abomination!!!
OK, an interesting take if for the sake of art. But, leaving the original name is likely a trademark violation especially since you publicly published their name and changing the original form could be seen as a patent violation since you used their eraser end. If Blackwell pencils are so loved, why change a beautiful thing? If your vision is regarded as a better, different, or new, then you should have started with raw materials and created the pencil completely from scratch.
Hackwing pencils are a thing within the pencil community already, this is just my take on the idea.
@@MeasuredWorkshop I see. I did not realize that. Thanks
He's not selling them, so it's probably okay.
Unless he makes a grand or two off the ad revenue.
Unless he is selling them there is no trademark issues I don't think.
