Cunard placed their order for a new cruise ship in 2017, announcing their intention to build the new ship during the 50th Anniversary of QE2 Celebration.
Today known as Queen Anne, the new ship is the 249th vessel built for Cunard, and was ordered from the Fincantieri Marghera Shipyard, Italy.
The ship’s design is based on the Pinnacle-class utilised by Holland America Line. The selection of the 113,000 gross ton Pinnacle-class platform makes the new ship larger than the Vista-class Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth.
Although smaller than the 149,500 gross ton flagship Queen Mary 2, the new vessel will have a higher passenger capacity. Cunard announced the design team for the public rooms aboard the then-unnamed ship in 2019.
Led by Simon Rawlings (David Collins Studio), Richmond International and Sybille de Margerie (Sybille de Margerie Paris), the design team were tasked with reimagining the Cunard experience for the modern traveller.

Did you enjoy the Queen Anne tour?
Loved it
Yes. Looking forward to seeing the ship for myself!
Oh boy oh boy oh boy so excited about this ship. Sailing on the maiden. See you there.
We are sailing on Queen Anne around the Med in September this year for my wife's 70th birthday it will be our first ever cruise, my wife was very anti cruising, however she is now very excited and cannot stop talking about it love the video and your brilliant description of this beautiful ship thank you 😀
Queen Anne will be a fabulous ship indeed
That's Chris
Thanks Chris for another informative tour ! I'm really getting a sense of just how much thought and detail the designers and builders have put into this ship.
My pleasure!
Love the suite names Chris and Rachelle
Very exciting.............I have a client who will be on the maiden voyage- I;ll be sure to tell him to attend your lecture.
We are booked on the 10th May cruise to the canaries. We can't wait to sail on her.
I hope Rachelle Cross will be aboard too so we can have all our Cunard books signed by both of you. Our favourite maritime authors.
I was landing three weeks ago on the Venice airport. During the landing I saw the Queen Anne.
Oh, I was so excited.
13 1/2 month to our big tour around the world.
Thanks Chris for your amazing videos. I know you will keep us informed on her progress. I have 2 cruises booked on her next year, I'm on the maiden voyage and again in late December. I can't wait to go to your lectures in person.
Sounds great!
Looks great. Booked on Norway Cruise in October next year. Just looking forward to everything on this beautiful ship.
Hope you enjoy it!
Wow, guest speaker on the maiden voyage! Congratulations!🎉 ( Can you put a good word in yo get Emma a discount on the Hudson suite? 😂🤞)
Haha Hudson should get owners rights really shouldn’t he 😂
See you on board in May
I loved the waterways you chose to name the Q1 and Q2 suites after. Very historical choices that were relevant to Cunard. Well done.
Hi Chris. Looking forward to your input on her Maiden Voyage. After being on the Queen Elizabeth Maiden Voyage , 7:48 I will also be on Queen Anne, very fortunate to have one of the Master Suites, Q2.
Yay one of the suites. Enjoy!!!
Hi Chris, Thanks for the exciting tour. We’ve just come back from the Northern lights on the Queen Victoria and whilst on board we attended a presentation by one of the voyage sales team on the Queen Anne which also gave us a great insight into what we can expect from the latest in the fleet.
We were lucky enough to be on the maiden voyage of the Queen Victoria and we’re super lucky and excited to be on the maiden voyage of the Queen Anne. We’re also back on in November for the canaries.
Very much looking forward to listening to you lecture on board. 😀
Can’t wait!! Glad to hear you’ll be aboard.
Thank you for the tour Chris. I am on the Queen Anne - Norwegian Fjords in August and taking the QM2 across the Atlantic on July 27th. Love, love Cunard.
Absolutely wonderful, my mother and I are booked on the maiden voyage and Canaries voyage following it. So very excited, and will definitely be coming to your insight lectures!!!!
Thank you Chris. Looking forward to your lecture(s) on board the maiden voyage and hopefully get a chance to the thank you personally for all your extremely informative and entertaining videos, books etc .
She looks gorgeous - can’t wait until October 2024 when we get to try her!
Oh yeah, love that pub!
Looks fabulous Chris. Can't wait until she comes onto service.😊
You and me both!
Chris All of this information was fantastic!, and I'm so happy to hear you will be on board for her maiden voyage and I am very excited to hear your lectures in person on that maiden trip ! Counting down the day! CHEERS!
Can't wait!
very interesting
We've booked for Norway in Oct and really looking forward to it, and we've never sailed on cunard so can't wait to see if we like this style of cruising
Interesting to see the progress, but looking at the cladding surrounding the sides of the funnel does make you wonder what the finished quality is going to like! The funnel cladding looks corrugated, obviously Cunard’s Clerk of the Works doesn’t have an eye for detail, it should be removed and replaced. As for the internals of the ship, I’m sure it will elegant, whether it will to everyone’s taste, the jury is out on that one. I’m looking forward to going on its maiden voyage in May and will cast my eye on its finish! However it will nice to go on a brand new ship before fixtures and fittings become damaged. I’m not one who shy’s away from giving my thoughts on my cruises with Cunard, which thankfully they are appreciated with, as is most cases it has highlighted things that are overlooked.
Booked on Christmas and New year, so looking forward to exploring the new ship 😍
Have fun!
Love the suite makings. Sad the spa is so low in the ship, but lots of lovely space and features. ❤️
Thanks Chris. Great videos. Are you on the second voyage, the Canaries? We are on that and would love to attend your lectures
Thanks! Just the first voyage for me - for now anyways :) have a great time!
Wouldn’t it be awesome if the 250th is a sister ocean liner for the Mary?!?
Every time I look for a crossing all the nice staterooms and suites are already booked.
Chris, thanks for another fascinating insight into the build of Queen Anne, seeing the inner structure and ALL that cabling. Hopefully will get to sail on her in her late 2024 or earlier 2025. Will you be doing anymore lectures onboard next year?
Only the one booking on Anne so far but I’ve got my name down for consideration for the Australian season too 🎉
wish I could be on her maiden voyage.
Looks like it will be a beautiful ship. Chris, will you be on board doing talks on the Queen Mary 2 when it's on its Australian leg of its world voyage in February?
Thanks for the message! I’ll be on QM2 in Asia this summer rather than the Australian leg.
also Queen Anne looks stunning. I really hope everyone boarding her gets there, attire pland, I'll probably cry if I see anyone wearing jogging bottoms on embarkation.
Thank you for your You Tube videos Chris. As a regular film goer I cant see any cinema on Queen Anne. I hope there is at least a screening room! I know there is an outdoor screen, but I cant imagine feature films being shown on it in the afternoons, especially on the Nov 2025 I am booked on
You're very welcome. I think the films will be shown in the Royal Court as they are on QV and QE.
really looking forward for her arrival to Southampton. do you know how I can get to come on board for a day visit, I do work at the cruise terminals here in Southampton, you might see me in crew x-ray or passing x-ray, I'll try and get on QM2 in 2024.🎉
Hi Chris, 3 great video’s. Doing Transatlantic in Jan 2025. Are you able to do a video on food stores kitchen etc the parts of the ship passengers don’t see. Also some technical information re fuel used, engines numbers type, food consumed. Techie stuff. Thanks.
The ship looks like it will be great.
How did you go about your decision making for the suites? When I first started seeing UK waterways I thought that the Tyne may have been included. 23 Cunard ships built on the river (appreciate not as many as the Clyde) but one was the Mauretania and another which was the Carpathia.
Chris, what is going on with the QM2? She is in Rotterdam for a major refit. but I'm not seeing any info on what's being done. A friend just sent me a post that the "pandemic exposed her age" and they want to make changes to her to "appeal to a broader clientele" what does all this mean????
As far as I know it’s mostly technical works. I don’t think we will see major changes to the floor plan this refit.
Can you show the accessibility considerations
She looks tip-top. Just a pity it doesn't say Southampton on her stern.
Queen Anne really is a ridiculous name for the ship. Indeed, John Malcolm Brinnin wrote in his classic book about the old liners "The Sway of the Grand Saloon" that Cunard would never have called the original Queen Mary the Queen Anne because she was a "colourless nobody". Certainly, nobody who ever saw Olivia Colman's oscar winning peeformance as Queen Anne in "The Favourite" would ever think it was a good name for a ship.
Exactly. There are so many better Queens that it could of been named. Or they could go back to a traditional name like Caronia or Berengaria. Chris Frame though is a Cunard fanboy and I do get the feeling that his reviews are not that impartial.
