Dude, I'll say it again: You have the perfect voice for radio, commercial voice over work ect... Ha! Anyway... I have an old iMac laying around (late 2008) I was thinking of possibly turning into a stand alone live noise maker of sorts, and I was pleased to see Odin will run in El Capitan! Really dig the channel! Cheers!
Thank you for covering Odin2, and especially for pointing out that it's not just "free" (as in "freeware") but also open-source (as in "free software" or "libre software") :) I've been using it a bit and making some tutorials about it as well (100% open-source audio production is my thing), but I wanted to watch your take on this synth to see if I missed anything of note. I find the patches you've demonstrated really inspiring, and they make me want to dive into this instrument once more.
There seems to be a bit of a FLOSS music plugin renaissance at the moment. Still, though, I'm waiting, so to speak, for, or at least hoping to find, a nice FLOSS synth plugin that can take a reasonably-long, quantum-computer-choking wav or flac or whatever accessible file, actually resynthesize it to a healthy amount of partials and then have a powerful system with which to work on/effect the results. Madrona Labs' ~four-year (and counting) foot-drag-with-the-name-Sumu (lost in the fog?) aside, it would ideally have to be FLOSS.
The synth itself is a bit outside my experience level to operate, but the idea of combining a textured droning sample with a synth that you displayed at the end was really intriguing and I'll definitely try that out soon!
I love that they made a synth inspired by Thor and released it as a VST3 that you can't use in Reason. Another example of why I'm not upgrading it until it supports VST3.
Hopefully the recent Reason roadmap is correct and they have VST3 support done by January. That's been the thing I most want as an update. I suspect they are having to rewrite a huge chunk of their code base to make it happen.
Great review! I love Odin II, and featured it in some of my synth jams. It's a great synth, indeed. It takes some time to delve into but it can make great sounds, and fun to play. More jams and patches coming soon.
its nice to see a popular creator actually cover a FOSS software of any kind, especially a plugin. hobbyist and music production community in general is SO brainwashed by for-profit companies into thinking non-free plugins are worse, or not worth using makes me so angry.
hey, i just read your comment, donÂŽt be angry, itÂŽs not worth it, just keep going your way... how do i know? iÂŽm a hobby/amateur musician since 1971 and went a long way - i play several instruments, played many completely styles of music (reggae for decades) and even made music for several utterly crazy films and am now more into electronic music - in the early 80s i had the chance to go into music business, but deliberately refused that, because i was aware, that iÂŽm too soft for that - i had moments, when i regretted it, but at the end of the day, iÂŽm very happy, sitting here in my garage, having a fine little home recording studio (i started and struggled with cassettes back in the day, so i know what a luxury we have now), a self sufficient nobody with a small herd of fans, haha... :-) as i said: keep going and do your stuff, being angry just costs energy for nothing - love and greetings from germany đââïž
I love Thor but with the new pricing model from Reason which is basically trying to force even long time customers into the subscription, I'm very happy that there is an open source alternative, although not exactly the same, the workflow is very similar and that's what I love so much about it.
Thank you for referring this synth. A lot of effort was put into producing the User Manual. Very good layout, pictures (I Like pictures!) and Hyperlinks. This fact alone is well worth me working with this synth (a novice I am, but with a good manual even I can learn). Overall excellent, and a Donation well worthy of the work put into Odin 2 and the User Manual. P.S. Did I Mention I like Manuals?
I really like this synth as well, it's just that it takes up A LOT of CPU when using even 4 voices of unison, which is really problematic for me because I like big analog pads, and I just can't use Odin without it taking 25% of my CPU, I really hope they would fix it, I installed the latest version. btw, if anyone knows how to fix the issue, please let me know!
When my old Computer reached it's limit I started to bounce more often, something I seem not like to do for reasons unknown, I like to stay MIDI as long as I can. But that gave me a few further years of good use, so I might suggest doing that with your ODIN-tracks.
@@stu4116 what i can tell you as a developer is that... when people ask for synths that are not cpu hungry, they are really asking... "how can i get awesome synthesized sounds but not pay any cost in terms of, cpu processing?". Of course, what they would be better off with is samples. Basically... the better the synth, the more itll cost in cpu. There is no way to get it for free. You can buy a better cpu, bounce / freeze, or just use a simpler synth. But then obviously, it wont have all the trimmings. Another example of this question is... "how can i run my game at highest gfx settings but not have to buy a new cpu / gfx card?"... simple answer... you can't unfortunately. Lol.
Another one to try, pfew. A few weeks ago I found Vital (I know I am late), then bought Rob Papen B.I.T., then found Surge and now Odin II. So many toys, so little time. Thanks man!
Thanks for so much for making this video. I would've never known about Odin II. You did a great job of covering the features. I can't wait to try it out.
I'm drowning in plugins, free and paid. Recently I've tried most of them for one seemingly simple task: to get that 303 sound. It didn't have to be a perfect recreation, just that resonant rawness (on a synth that wasn't specifically build to emulate one). I failed with all of them, although some came close, with some tinkering. Usually they were either very thin sounding or they'd go berserk with whistling resonance. Even those with a dedicated "acid" mode failed (looking at you synthmaster). I used to think filters were mostly the same for synths, but I've found out that's not true. Same goes for distortion. I've only found one that got that 303+distortion sound right (for the most part): DTQ plusdistortion, which is free too. Anyway, as you said how great Odin's filters were, I put it to the test. I've only been playing around with it for a few minutes and it can actually do it! Even with saturation turned down there's that magical "glass cricket" sound using the diode filter with high resonance. Even rawer than the original if you ask me. Didn't have to jump through a single hoop either. Awesome synth, thanks fot the tip!
Thanks so much for the review. I got a few things figured out. Also I like your blend of drone and organic concept. If you happen to make more videos just about texture making, I would love to find out. :)
I was about to bemoan it's CPU hunger. I had Odin II v2.2 installed since last year and that was both CPU hungry And occasionally unstable, on my system. This plugin is simple enough even for me to use, yet it has a lot of options and sounds warm and interesting. Oddly, I can get only 6 voices of polyphony out of it in Unison 1 Mode, not the 24 voices claimed. What might I be doing wrong?
Your videos truly inspire me and have helped me learn so much. A random question for any people in the comments... what is the purpose of parallel routing? I assumed that all modular synths use a single chain (input to output)... silly me I guess. ^_^
Do you have to use the mod matrix for everything? For instance, there's a filter envelope that looks straight forward, but I don't see any click through or drag drop option. I assumed that the initial state of the synth would allow the use of the envelope on the default filter without using the matrix, but it doesnt appear that way to my amateur eyes. It seems like you can use any modulation source for any parameter....so why label the mod envelope and filter envelope separately? Could all just be mod envelopes. It's actually really awesome the flexibility available. This is the synth where I can finally design my sounds from scratch, and they sound like I imagined in my head.
There is another one called vk-1 free synth I am not convinced that much using such free beer when having vital and surge. Genesis by Umet Ozcan is interesting for maybe sound design not for performance. Quite opposite of that would be using only commercial synths like serum, pigments, falcon, spire, phase plant, omnisphere and avenger. What is so special about Thor was I guess the formant filter but the main sound in reason came from subosc, layers and effects not Thor by itself. Like the fractalizer on zebra by uhe and absynth by ni makes the sound character very unique but without any further processing it will be almost dry. ZynAddSubFX by Paul Nasca can do extremely wide pads and it is free. The filters are basic but the capability to stack layers in additive fashion could give good results, specially when looking for deep and wide sounds. There had been some fixes to it from the UI in some paid version, but I suggest sticking to synths which are in current development.
Hahaha just as I was thinking it reminds me of Thor you said it seems inspired by it. I find that amazing because it is one of the best synths in Reason to this day. The fact it is free is amazing

I just took a first listen to one of your tracks "A View From Out There" I really liked it I thought that it was good. First time checking out your store... a real professional look going on, did you set up your site or do you have help?
I had this when I used FL12, but now I've upgraded to FL20, it no longer works. This is frustrating because I had to stop using the old FL because it crashes so often... now I cannot edit or change older projects in the new FL because I used to use the crap out of this synth (for every sound imaginable, it's really THAT GOOD) and it's not being recognised in the new FL at all despite all my attempts to fix the issue. I can't be the only one!!! Someone HELP! Please?
Sorry I don't know this already but when you call the sound an "organic texture" towards the end, what does that mean? Where would I look to find other examples possibly not in a $449 library?
I use freeware synths for all my songs and they sound quote random people "really professional" it's all in the user these days. If you know what you're looking for and have the time and patience eventually you will get a great sound. I can't remember last i paid for a synth. It was probably my Access Virus-Ti that is honestly just collecting dust, yeah it's sad.
Hello. Can you tell me which headphones you have? and is it possible to do mixing in them? and what would you recommend studio headphones in the middle price range?
Yo! Sennheiser HD6 Mix in this video, but recently upgraded to Austrian Audio HI-X65s. ODIN & ODIN 2 synth = a THOR (from Reason) in VST form.
For some reason REASON IS BEST
Are these Presets available on your website? I don't see anything for Odin specifically
I wonder if this will be coming out in the new CLAP plugin format?
I have no idea why reaper fail to scan Odin. Does someone has the same problem? I'm on Win64bit
Do you also have the problem that you can not specify your own installation path in Windows during the installation and Windows Defender reports?
Sorry I don't know this already but when you call the sound an "organic texture" towards the end, what does that mean? Where would I look to find other examples possibly not in a $449 library?
Unfortunately VST3 only (PC Windows) => not compatible with my Komplete Kontrol software/hardware setup => too bad.
Hello! Where have you been my whole life? EDIT: I just realized I had this in my VST folder...oh, too many plugins...đ đ
Both are fantastic sets of headphones, I used the HD6 Mix units for years for both mixing and mastering as well as recording. I have a new video coming out all about the Austrian Audio units tomorrow, including their new cheaper headphones!
Velocity only routes into the amp? Would be nice if it went to the filters too. Any aftertouch support?
You can add aftertouch and map velocity in the mod matrix!
thor, odin, what's next? asgard? loki?
Asgard would make an amazing name for a reverb plugin!
hi my daw only supportd vs2 not vst3 what to do ?
0:42 There seems to be no link in the description.
Damn it haha - had to go update a bunch of videos last night and must have accidentally removed that! Fixed now though, thanks for the heads up!
