_______________ THE KING KONG DRUM BEAT (DRUM LESSON) -- This is an extremely famous drum beat that you may not even know you've heard. It's originally from the song by the band Redbone called "Prehistoric Rhythm". The drummer was Pete DePoe. David Garibaldi has said that this is one of the grooves that he based his style largely upon.

This is first used by Pete DePoe, the original Redbone drummer. He is a Native American and learned to play drums on the Siletz Reservation.

Neil Peart uses this sticking on the ride bell in loads of Rush songs, most namely YYZ.

If you want to get to hear the original on the Redbone album, you will hear that Garabaldis take on it is actually simplified. If you hear DePoe play it, it is much more complex.

Thanks Stephan, I had kind of forgot how the king Kong beat was played, so I called it up and ran across your video. I like how you broke it down to something I can remember this time around. Had to give you a thumbs up and I also subscribed. Glad your still giving lessons online. I will look forward to your next vid.

Take the hi hat snare ostinato RLRRLRRL and place bass drum in different places. Then create two bar patterns with bass drum variations. Some really cool grooves. Also explore Two hand hi hat Sextuplet Grooves. Also - Single strokes - hat, snare, snare, hat, snare, snare, snare accent, snare, snare, hat, snare, snare. add bass drum in different positions. cool stuff
The accents on these grooves make all the difference. R accent, L, R, L accent, R, L.

At 6:00, it reminds me of John Bonham's drum line to the "Immigrant Song". Many famous drummer from Bonham (R.I.P.), and Neil Peart (R.I.P.) to Stewart Copeland, Tommy Lee, and Phil Collins owe a debt of gratitude to Peter DePoe.
No offense, but if, Justin Timberlake, and Henry Rollins had a love child....

Did Redbone RECORD their "....King Kong Beat" track in 1970 ? Be sure to check Kaleidoscope's 1969 track, "Lie To Me" . Listen to one of the versions within which you can clearly hear the hi-hat and snare pattern.

I can read from these comments that people can't hear the difference between syncopated and unsyncopated versions that bell pattern f you play it all the downbeat it sounds like Rush... The most important thing any drama can learn is the difference between swinging and straight time

  • @ilvdico

Hi.... Is that EFX crash a K custom or A custom as your hi hat top? I am considering buying a 14" EFX (A or K) and using it as a hi hat top. Do you think I would get a similar sound?
Your videos are awesome. Thanks for your contribution to the drumming community.

Really nice groove. Love how you give the history. I hate when people tend to just ignore that stuff, it's important!!
Non-related question... How tight do you keep you snare. Don't know the actual term for it. But the "rug" under the snare... You know what I mean! :D I'd love to see a video where you explain how you can use that to change your sound. An example would be Steve Jordan who's using this function to achieve "fat" sounds.
    Have a nice Sunday!

That ts the Bonham version..... but King Kong is not really a specific beat it's a bell pattern. African bell pattern...with rudiments applied to it, as illustrated here

"They need to be learned by every drummer who picks up the sticks." I heard that comment, and I left. It's funny in a sad ironic way just how many drum beats "every drummer who picks up the sticks" should (a moral imperative, really?) be able to play that I will never be able to play.

    • @StephenTaylorDrums
      @StephenTaylorDrums  Před 8 lety +18

Hey Jason...I never said "be able to play". I simply said learn it. i.e. recognize it. Understand its importance. The King Kong beat, the amen break...I could list a few...they have made a huge impact on modern music. You should, as a drummer that wants to learn the vocabulary of this instrument, be aware of what they are. And if on top of that you can learn to play them (which btw, I completely think you can learn this groove if you set your mind to it) then all the better.
Regardless, thanks for taking the time to leave your thoughts. I love hearing from you!
