    Marc and Heath, keep doing what you are doing! You guys have cracked the code for reviewing modern films , even better than Siskel and Ebert in my humble opinion. Being a father of two girls I reluctantly admit watching the original more than my fair share and look forward to watching the new version through the lens of such great points discussed. Thanks for taking the time to review and keep up the great work.

    Great and thorough job on your review. I really appreciated your deep dive into the production (and post-production) side of things. Reading interviews with the director team, it was clear the level of forethought, planning and detailed execution they did. Your discussion of this was a real testament to that effort and increased my appreciation for this film. Thanks for the time you guys took to review and share your thoughts. I saw the movie and loved every moment. The Janis one-take ("I'd Rather Be Me") was equally impressive, as each moment built and built and built until its crashing conclusion.

      Yes! Janis’ song and performance was very strong. Lots of near-miss dance moves and camera pans. It’s amazing that it worked out so well. Talk about pressure! This film was a lot of fun. So much to like! I enjoyed speaking to the behind-the-scenes crew to hear about the challenges and solutions they came up with.

    Thanks for putting this together Heath. This was a fun film to discuss. I realize I said cinemorphic when I meant CinemaScope in discussing the musical sequences, and how it’s different than the anamorphic sequences that are grounded in reality.

      Thanks Marc, it was fun. I'm sure people can figure out what you meant, or they will think you know more about aspect ratios than they do, since they aren't familiar with cinemorphic ;)

    I was surprised by this film. I was afraid that because it was a remake I would enjoy the music but would get bored with the same storyline. I was wrong. Although much of the humor is generated from the same situations, they managed to add new jokes and take scenes further to make it funny even after seeing the original. I am not sure if I would have liked it as much if I had never seen the original movie.

      I saw the original so long ago that I didn’t really remember all the gags. This was pretty fresh for me and I got a ton of laughs out of it. And the music was very well done. Lots of high energy and excitement.

    • @CinemaTechnica
      @CinemaTechnica  Před 4 měsíci +9

      Yeah, I thought it was fresh and different enough to appreciate, even if it was basically the same film. I don’t mind remakes if they are done well, and I thought this was done well.

  • @postpublishing6377

    The film took in $32M over the weekend, nearly covering its production costs.

    • @CinemaTechnica
      @CinemaTechnica  Před 4 měsíci +9

      That doesn’t surprise me, the original had a budget of $18M and made $24M opening weekend, and grossed $130M overall. It’s not a big budget film with a ton of expensive, well known actors that demand massive salaries, so it can be done on a reasonable budget, so it can much more easily make its money back, especially since it has a good following already. I think it will do well.

    • @CinemaTechnica
      @CinemaTechnica  Před 4 měsíci +6

      It’s up to $66M after two weekends, and has held the number one spot both weekends. Not bad for something originally slated for direct to streaming release on Paramount +.

      @@davidcapps4897 Yeah it's weird. I've watched a few of them, and they don't really give good reasons. I think people who are really attached to the original may have a tough time seeing someone else in that role, or appreciating the story being told in a new way. As someone who enjoyed the original, and see it as being iconic, without having that same level of attachment, I can enjoy it from the level of just a retelling of a good movie in a novel way with what I thought was decent music. I didn't mind them using some of the same jokes, and I enjoyed the new jokes.

    You have to love musicals to enjoy this new one because they burst into song every 5 minutes, in fact it starts taking the piss out of itself in the second half by having characters pretend to start singing 😂 I love how they've done the songs in the style of proper pop videos though, rather than just plain old song & dance numbers.
    You just have to watch it with an open mind, it was obviously never going to be as good as the original but its not trying to be, it's more like a companion piece than a remake if you get me.

    • @CinemaTechnica
      @CinemaTechnica  Před 4 měsíci +8

      I think there are 12 songs in it, and they referred to them as music videos, so your every five minutes reference isn’t far off. I’m not big into musicals, but I enjoyed it. But I also knew it was going to be a musical, it might have been a shock to me if I didn’t know in advance.

    • @djgeneralbounce
      @djgeneralbounce Před 4 měsíci +8

      @@CinemaTechnica I knew what I was in for with this when I went to see it earlier, the original is my favourite film of all time and I knew the songs from the Broadway version, so I was really up for seeing this version. A lot of people weren't aware it was a musical though and quite a few people had walked out of the cinema by the halfway point.
      It's a shame the trailers have gone so far out of their way to hide the musical aspect because its the whole point of this version. A lot of people I know have said they thought it would just be a lazy remake and they'd have been more interested in seeing a musical version, whereas others were expecting a remake but really don't like musicals.

    • @CinemaTechnica
      @CinemaTechnica  Před 4 měsíci +9

      @@djgeneralbounceyeah, it’s weird they didn’t focus on that. I haven’t seen the musical, but was looking forward to seeing a musical version. I really like the original, so may not have been interested if I didn’t think it was going to be something new.

    • @djgeneralbounce
      @djgeneralbounce Před 4 měsíci +8

      @@CinemaTechnica after Cats and West Side Story flopped the studios are scared of selling musicals as what they are in case they put off audiences, but "mis-selling" them like they have with this, Wonka and The Color Purple is only going to work in specific cases surely? It might work for something like Wonka, but this was a low budget pop musical that had no reason to exist outside the musical context, and many people who would enjoy it probably won't give it a go since they've assumed from the trailers it's a straight remake of the original. And the flipside of that is negative word of mouth from those who aren't musical fans.
      It made its budget back within the first weekend, and that was before it was released internationally. There's no reason to think it would have performed differently if they'd just sold it as the musical it is.

    • @postpublishing6377
      @postpublishing6377 Před 4 měsíci +8

      Heath and I actually had a conversation about musicals and if they are box office busts? None of them seem to turn a profit. Taraji P. Henson from The Color Purple was complaining about being under paid. But the reality is, is that the film is not a money maker. That’s a whole different discussion.
