  • Watch and learn how the Swytch bike thumb throttle works and hear how to use the power level setting in the settings menu. Also watch to see how I'll be giving away a thumb throttle soon.

I have a thumb throttle. I barely ever use it for anything than a few seconds at a time. It's best trick is to give you a bit of an assist to get you going at traffic lights. You can get the motor going before it kicks in through pedaling (so those first couple of turns of the pedals aren't all you). Kind of like a little NOS button going from an absolute stop to moving or any time when you quickly want to go from a slower speed to higher. Once I'm at the speed I want to go, I just pedal. Also useful when easing between cars in heavy traffic or other tight spots.

An excellent explanation of the power settings, easily the best I've found here on CZcams. Waiting for my Swytch kit to arrive, hopefully any day now. Nice collection of classic motorcycles too :)

Did it ever arrive? Signed up my email and I am waiting to hear back for when orders can be placed. Unsure when I will hear back.

Chris, I’ve watched several of your Swytch videos to learn about real-world effects. As you probably know, Swytch has re-engineered its battery. I signed up to purchase a kit before the new battery was launched. By the time the purchase date cane along, I could no longer order the kit with the battery that you have, and I must get the new design. I am leery of this as I suspect the capacity will be lower than the previous battery (they label it a 30km, but I have doubts as it is smaller.) Swytch has not updated their website, so I have been communicating vis their Support, but I find that severely lacking since they never really answer my questions. So, have you any insights into the new battery? Thanks.

As a current owner, I was offered a spot on the early purchase list so I received an offer to buy the new kit along with some details. I chose not to as I am happy with what I have and the cost was too high for me to simply buy and review. I have the Pro battery which is rated for 50km and in my testing found that it will deliver that with average riding conditions, average in this case being not very hilly and not using high levels of assist or assist all the time. When not making a video, I typically only use the kit for assist up long or steep hills, and in those conditions I get less distance per charge although that is to be expected. My feeling is that if Swytch rates the new Air battery at 30km, then it will likely deliver that under normal conditions. The 2 kits that I have are of high quality, perform as expected and have not given me any reason to doubt the performance claims of the new kit. I’m sorry I can’t provide any specific info, although if Swytch decides to have me review a new kit I’ll happily share the results. Thank you for watching and commenting, and good luck with your kit.

It says on the website that this is not a throttle only kit.

On my Swytch kit when the throttle is attached I can set the pedal assist to zero - no lights on the right - and just use the throttle. I'm pretty sure the throttle gives full output in this mode - it'll spin up to 20mph on a mild gradient without pedaling with me on the bike and I'm pretty heavy. Does yours not work like this?

You know, I only realized a couple of days ago that you can set the pedal assist to zero by pushing the down arrow when you have one light lit. What I typically do is just shut the entire unit off until I need pedal assist. Since I only recently discovered this I have not yet tried the thumb throttle in that mode but I will now. Thank you for watching and for sharing that useful information.

@@Chris_Does_Everything I've had the kit fitted for about a year now but I never got around to fitting the throttle I bought with the kit until last week after I had some issues with the power cutting out which I think was due to the pedal assist sensor and disc getting out of alignment. Pedal assist generally works well but my commute to work has a lot of gradient changes so I was constantly changing the assist setting or turning the unit off because there are some steep downhill sections where even on level 1 the pedal assist is too much and when travelling the other way if you lose cadence uphill the pedal assist backs off just when you need it. With the throttle you have so much better control - it's a real improvement. I also seem to use less battery too despite using full throttle to drag me up the steep bits.

This kinda make me wish I wouldn’t have ordered the new kit. I have a 750w ebike and it is no problem to ride all throttle and no peddling and stay at 20+ miles per hour. I will probably be disappointed.

Do you recommend thumb throttle or twist throttle?

I haven’t tried the twist throttle with the Swytch bike but based on my motorcycle experience I think when used on a bicycle a thumb throttle is a better choice.
