- Are meat boxes actually worth it? I had been thinking about trying out a meat subscription box when Good Chop reached out asking me to review their meat subscription. I said YES! But I turned down the opportunity to be an affiliate. That's because I want everyone to know this is a 100% HONEST review.
Good Chop is a meat and seafood monthly subscription meat box. Every month you can choose from 25 different meat and seafood options delivered right to your door. The box I received was their medium size, which has 6 pieces of meat and is priced at $149 per box (although you can typically find discount codes online).
Good Chop Review:
Pluses - meat and seafood come from American farmers and fisheries. They don't contain any additives, hormones, antibiotics, or coloring. You have the option of choosing 100% grass-fed (for an additional cost). There is no obligation or contract. You can cancel whenever. And they have a 100% money-back guarantee!
Minuses - When I compared the prices for similar meat at a local grocery store, it came out to $102. So this isn't a box for those trying to save money. They also don't accept food stamps.
Good Chop Honest Review: Only buy this if you're looking for convenience. Having good quality meat delivered to your door each month can save a lot of time. But if you're trying to save money, meat subscription boxes probably aren't for you.
Let me know if you've ordered from Good Chop or used another meat subscription service!
Disclaimer: I received this box for free to review on CZcams. I did not receive any money from Good Chop to make this review and I am not an affliate or have a code. I make zero kickback if you choose to purchase.
Awesome that you turned down affiliate sales. Appreciate the honest review!
Thank you for your honest review and the disclaimer. I appreciate honesty.
GoodChop double charged me and refused to refund the erroneous charge.
Their beef is tender but tastes gamey.
I cancelled after they refused to refund me for their mistake.
So I just got my first medium box that was discounted but did have to pay shipping, total was $108.99...the disappointing thing was the box was leaking off the Fed Ex truck, it was warm to the touch before we opened it, if there was dry ice in it, it had melted completely and some of the meat was already defrosted or in the middle of defrosting...I immediately took pictures and placed all the meat in our freezer...but I'm afraid to ingest any of it. The vacuum sealing of the ground beef was compromised too. I then immediately called the company up to demand a refund &/or return as well as cancel my account, they did agree to do this so we'll see if they make good.
Seafood and meat boxes are not for saving money, they are for access of those goods in situations you believe will do a combination of things for you. If the boxes are convenient because you have difficulty finding and accessing the goods, and especially if your location makes it harder to buy those items as groceries, then you will definitely regard the services as extremely valuable. If you live in an upscale community, the pricing will be fair to discounted compared to the food in your region. If you are in a remote area that lacks grocery service or a place where generally the prices for anything is sky high, then the service is actually very budget friendly. If you live in a region where you do not trust the quality and safety of food provided, then regardless of price, the service is a needed option compared to what is locally available. For the average consumer, the pricing appears to be somewhere between a 30% to 50% markup in relation to national meat prices in North America. If the items you ordered are not available locally by your preference, then the price isn't that relevant when other options are limited.
Thanks for the review. It was thorough and hit on the points people are wondering about.
First off thank you for such a great review. I wish more reviews were like yours. You gave so much information.
Such a great review…Thank you!
I would factor into your comparison price the fact that Good Chop comes flash frozen and vacuum sealed. (Something I do with my store bought meats). I can honestly say, If I factor in the cost of bags to vacuum seal everything you covered, it would easily make up the difference.
The only thing lacking in your review was a taste test…But heck, I can find a guy video who covers the eating part…😂

My husband used to work in a grocery store and did a lot of work in the butcher area, had him look over stuff. He says the price of the meat is over what you would pay, and the shipping thing you mentioned is incorrect because they add on shipping prices in the final. You probably didnt realize because you got it free? I think you are being overly kind on the review. But none the less, I suppose if you want to try it and yeah dont have time to get out, might be worth the high cost.
I think the key is that most of it is grass fed, organic, wild caught, etc. I just did the $270 box, 19 pounds of steak, chicken, and seafood. For to buy all of these at a grocery store (keep in mind grass fed, organic) would cost me $280. That’s just my personal experience and why I went with them
That’s an AVERAGE of $17/lb of protein!
Your meat from HEB actually came to $115.74.
I love your videos! I appreciate your "realness"
Keep posting!!!
Best review I could find. Also was not annoying like some others. Nicely done.
Just got my first medium box, way too expensive. I have no problem grocery shopping
I still gotta go to the store for side anyway so I don’t really see how convenient these boxes companies really are.
YMMV
Plenty of bad experiences but this is the case for any meat subscription.
Mostly has to do with shipping/logistics/customer service
Grunts are underpaid and managed poorly leading to errors.
IF you don't run into misfortune, the actual quality/quantity for price is okay, better than Omaha Steaks at least
The discounts are marketing bait though (you get what you pay for, not a steal), and Costco, even Safeway might be better if available
Great video!
This video came with with great information in the disclaimer box! Thanks for the education!
Thank you!
I was looking into Good Ranchers and Butcher Box and came across Good Chop (its promoted by Google right now). So glad for the review.
They sent me whatever they wanted and completely ignored my real or
der. They offered no money back, it is a complete scam.
Damn.
Great review.
My bison n crabcakes were cool not frozen called them they credit me $50 I do not recommend buying anything from good chop Had @ 1 teaspoon of dry ice in box upon delivery In July 2024
Really glad you did the math here. I'm very frugal with my money, and with inflation going crazy, I'm really looking for more ways to get the best bang for my buck. I have a promotional deal to get the box for $100, so I'll give it a try at least once. I only have me to worry about, so I'll see how things pan out in due time.
I loved your review! So honest and FULL of valuable information... Thank you for that! 😊
That meat looks good... how did it taste vs store bought?
I plan on trying it this month since my pregnant wife will be at our place in IL for a little over a month. And and if we have some leftover come January, we can keep it in the freezer for when I return from work stints or the baby comes. But i will say I would be planning to try it if I did have the discount code, taking it down $99. And if we didnt eat steak regularly.
I wouldnt use this while living in Boston. Its just me and I get a good supply from the Fogo butcher every month or two for like $90 on the high end.
I’m looking for local healthy meats. The price is close enough to consider . What I would like to see is purchasing meat as I would from local market ( grocery store) .
You never really addressed the quality of the products. How does it compare with common supermarkets for cut and taste? Also, I will use your numbers to calculate the actual price/Lb of the items for comparison. Thanks for reviewing the service!
Sorry for a 2nd separate post but I’ve tried twice to do a reply to my first comment and it just disappears! 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
I’d forgotten to add that it appears in your photos that they’ve removed what’s called the rib cap or “deckle”, the outer muscle meat edge around the steak. It is a thousand times superior to the rest of the steak! And unfortunately, because of its prized properties, (flavor and super tenderness), some outfits remove it. Yeah. Too bad! I was thisclose to trying then!
Super pretty. Great info!
Funny, I was just playing and posted a comment on another video about food stamps..I wish I could get some stamps..
Shwann trucks takes EBT. I can't afford both food and rent so without food stamps would just starve...
So how did it taste?
I know you cancel it but why even have a subscription.. let me just order one box
They didn't offer a dime back, a credit or refund.
2 months after the order, and a complaint to the BBB I received a full refund. For the record :-)
convenient always backfires
Man, food stamps would be nice. I would rather use my tax dollars on my food and goodchop if I had them and if they took them, I'd be living life 😎
Too bad so sad don't accept SNAP benefits
Thanks for the honest review. Yeah that's too pricey for my current budget We actually spend a ton on groceries but we also eat a lot of meats... It would be nice to get higher quality meats I feel like I would probably try to do something like get other a quarter of a cow or something like that instead straight from a farmer. Even that's like a lot of money up front I have certain amounts per pound I try to go with and buy what happens to be on sale a lot of times we get the same kind of cuss of meat ground beef chicken breast sometimes whole chickens. For the most part. If we did have more money and more financial ability I definitely would be going from more organic free range type items I know that they are really great. Thanks for mentioning the thing about the salmon with the food dye I actually didn't even think of that. I have sometimes they can put food down and meet hopefully the stores that I'm buying meet at aren't doing that for beef but I have heard in the past that sometimes they do that so it's definitely something I should probably be mindful of her look into I know that with organic products they don't add coloring I'm pretty sure cuz they're not allowed to. I'm wondering if they have to label that nowadays or not I would assume they would have to label that or make some kind of a note on packaging but then again with whole products like meat they don't have ingredients less so maybe they're allowed to add things for color and get away with it. I definitely get mad at the FDA for how much chemicals and crap they put into our food system that's just completely unnecessary. Or there is safer options out there.
Yes it can be really hard to avoid things like organic or higher quality meats. That's when we just say "I'm doing the best I can." As long as you're still eating nutritious foods, then you're still doing great!
"Finding a way " rambling too much & already on miserly limit for shopping. Maybe Shwann Truck meats will be less expensive for them even though it is probably not grass fed & organic?
@@michaellloyd5855 Yeah the schwan's is definitely too much for me too. 😉 I like to talk that's why I ramble. It's cool though it's a part of me.... and I like me. I also voice text so all the random thoughts come out at once.
I need to save money and time, what a dilemma
I would hope tax payers wouldn't have to foot the bill for premium meat subscription boxes..
Good chop is garbage
How so? This was my first time using them
