For my money, it's the best song to come out of the NES era. At barely a minute long, it still loops in my head 35 years later.
Love the presentation on this, with a running clock and each track's start time onscreen.
I love listening to the Famicom tracks and comparing them to the NES versions. The Famicom sounds harsher at times but I still appreciate it.
Famicom Disk System sound chip: Ricoh RP2C33 ------------------ it sounds like Wavetabled-FM analog synth feeling, fat & rich. which PC & NES could not emulate it.
The Ricoh RP2C33, used by the Famicom Disk System, adds one extra sound channel with primitive wavetable support. FDS Produces waves using 64 × 64 custom wavetables with 33 volume settings.
Although the latest FamiTracker version supports volume envelopes that go all the way up to 32, the volume column in the pattern editor will max out at 0x0F.
I grew up playing Castlevania 2 and these songs are burned into my brain. I do like the FDS version more. Perhaps it is the fuller richer version that I haven't heard all my life. Also Castlevania 3 Famicom is king on 8 bit.
While this version of the soundtrack is interesting, the NES version is definitely more polished. Dwelling of Doom is really lacking, without its energic pitch bends. The drums are also noticeably more discret here. And the global mix/mastering is better too in the NES version.
1:50 is my favorite in this soundtrack
YEAHHHH BLODDY TEARS
It's everybody's favorite, mine too.
That music is in the entrance fight scene on the castlevania series on netflix beutiful bloody tears
Begin!
It's pretty much everyone's favorite.
The film motif on the title screen is a nice touch.
why nes is so good with this game is the composers made the effort to rework the tunes to play to the nES's strengths, and made them really punch through, instead of just dropping instrumentation like the zelda games.
All FDS versions of games are incomparably better, except some songs in Zelda ll.
Message of Darkness really sounds creepy and haunted- just like something you’d hear from an old time vampire movie. All the other pieces are much better on the NES, but the Famicom wins with Message of Darkness.
2:59 Where the masterpiece starts......
At last i found an brother-in-arms
What a horrible night to have a curse my friends
Whoa I just noticed that I had written this comment about two years ago
Finally, a Monster Dance enjoyer!
I'm Japanese and I use a translator, but I agree.
Message of darkness reminds me of uninvited for some reason.
My favorite is the Bloody Tears
Darn strait.
The original/proper version of Bloody Tears is awesome
The NES version of Bloody Tears is an example of a more limited chipset sounding better. The FDS has more channels, but the way percussion is used on the NES version is catchier.
@@Pan_Z Agreed. The quality of CVII’s FDS soundtrack is inconsistent at best. It seems they mastered it by Dracula’s Curse, as it’s a veritable upgrade.
@@LoveFor298Yen Akumajou Densetsu (Castlevania 3) was never released on the FDS. It was a cartridge with an extra sound chip. They weren't allowed to use custom sound chips for NES cartridges so we got the inferior soundtrack.
@@Paulmolive08
Oh, I see. Thanks!
You learn something new every day.
@@Paulmolive08 All things considered, the NES version of Castlevania III would still be a Top 5 NES soundtrack if the Famicom version didn't exist
The differences between the FDS Japanese version and the NES North American version are interesting. The FDS version's music sounds more "creepy", while the NES version's music sounds more "action-y", and has a greater emphasis on drums, along with vibrato and glissando, the result of a better sound engine.
I prefer the NES version, but it could just be my personal nostalgia speaking.
The FDS version has elements the NES version doesn't, but the NES version sounds better on most of it. The intros to Bloody Tears and Monster Dance make my ears bleed, but Silence of the Daylight sounds awesome. The first part of Dwelling of Doom sounds better on NES, but I like the effect at 4:14. If they had used the FDS's full potential instead of half-assing it, it would sound a lot better than it does.
Definitive Dubs konami may have experimented the fds' soundchip with mixed results. But boy they NAILED it with castlevania 3
@Taylord JP Castlevania 3 (Akumajou Densetsu) isn't FDS though, it just has the VRC6 chip.
All a sound engine does is try to playback music as efficiently as possible. It's all due to the instruments. A bad sound engine just means it's laggy as shit.
This music is simply eargasmic.
This music is simply ear piercing.
@@nintendofanatic2837 somewhat agree with you especially bloody tears.
@@ccalhoun3908 yeah, bloody tears hurts my ears the most. Other tracks still kind of do, but they sound nice
3:55 is so gooooooooooooooooood
so badass
I think at the time these sound waves weren't as flexible as they became to be in Castlevania 3. The NES really takes the cake in this situation.
The FDS's new sound channel is actually extremely flexible, compared to the fairly limited flexibility of the VRC6's three new sound channels. VRC6 wins, I think, by simply having more channels to work with, and having a more advanced sound engine that utilizes the available hardware better. Also, the VRC6's simple PSG synthesis blends together with the existing NES sound channels (also PSG synthesis) much more gracefully than the FDS's wavetable/FM channel, which really sticks out against all the simple PSG channels.
An FDS game actually using its extra channel for melodic leads in-game ! Typical of Konami, and something first-party games avoided.
yep
the fds made the zelda soundtrack great but do you prefer load times or no load times and switching sides
@@SamuraiTacos1 The FDS version of Zelda only used the FDS audio for melody on the title screen, the game over screen, and the ending (where there are no sound effects). In game, however, since sound effects were played using FDS audio, the music only uses 2A03, and is identical to the NES release. It's the sound effects that change.
Here, the entire soundtrack is different. Not only is the FDS audio used melodically in game, but it's often for lead instruments.

中世のモンスター狩りには01:50のBloody Tearsが欠かせない
Es una extraña mezcla entre los 8 y 16 bits, sinceramente me agrada, esto es nuevo para los que somos de occidente, en especial los del continente americano. :')
Definitivamente, es genial 😎🤙
Castlevania 2 got to be one of the best!!!
ドラキュラシリーズの中でも知名度は低い作品だと思うけど名曲揃い。
今後の作品にも沢山出る人気の曲ブラッデイーティアーズも初出はこの作品。
光というか輝きを感じる音色
greatest game music !!
FDS音源の使い方が1番上手いゲームだと思う
awesome
Silence of the Daylight and Bloody Tears have to be the two best Nintendo BGMs ever.
the silence of the daylight music of the disk system are used in the commercial to the castlevania 2 to the nes
Idk why everyone says this is terrible, but I have not heard the nes version so this sounds pretty good to me without comparison
Thank you FM Synthesis, thank you.
It's just wavetable synthesis.
The FDS sound channel is FM that uses a wavetable instead of a sine wave. So you're both right.
the important thing is that nobody who talks about this stuff in comments really fundamentally understands any of it at a technical level. it's 100% regurgitation of factoids
@@desktorp same lol. I know what all the sound expansion chips are for the nes, but I have no idea how it works or anything lol
won't b able to sleep tonight is truly cursed
ご苦労様です
up楽しみにしてます
The music from FDS versions of games are very interesting to listen to. It sounds different while keeping the same energy as if it was still on the North American versions. Japanese people probably think the same when they listen to North American versions. Just interesting.
*Original* version. Konami made the game. Konami of America did not. US customers got a localization.
I don't hear what everyone else in the comments are saying, Bloody Tears sounds fine
Hey...Tjat 's Petreyty Good!
Castlevania 2 music - NES wins
Castlevania 3 music - Famicom wins
I agree
100%
Sorry Famicom wins both because we got an inferior version of the console... the NES.
Castlevania 1: Tie (They're the exact same)
Sirynx77 how is the nes inferior?
When I play Dracula II: Seal of the Curse (as it's called in Japan), I plan on playing the Japanese version as that's what the original developers intended to be seen and heard. That said, the NES version is without a doubt superior and is what I prefer listening to.
I can't decide which "Within these castle walls" I like better, both have their good points and bad. I like the shorter loop in this version but I like the added tempo in the NES version....
The reason I have a FDS is for that special sound chip
Great, though the intros to Bloody Tears and Monster Dance got hit hard with that bell-ish sounding synth. Though besides that, generally good amounts of improvement thanks to the added channel I'd say. Incredibly interesting to hear the FDS Monster Dance was the base for the remix in Smash Ultimate though.
Well yeah. Nintendo are Japanese.
The SSBU Bloody Tears sounds more like this version aswell
最高やと思うよ
Imo, all songs are better, except for... Bloody Tears. The NES version for that song was better.
Monster Dance actually sounds pretty creepy in this version.
within these castle walls last boss a requiem
Akumajou Dracula (cause of Early Release)|Castelvania 2 (NES Chiptune)|Akumajou Densetsu (VRC6 strongest than NES and does has "Easy Mode")
It's amazing this videogame.
😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
Found out the CV3 music sounds amazing on Famicom compared to NES so I decided just for fun to check out CV2's. And all I can say is, *ow.* I didn't even know Bloody Tears was Bloody Tears at first.
This is best import version

Irrelevant but ok
@@sebastiann.8088 only additional one voice FM on disk system?
Bloody Ears
It's got a unique sound, but the NES one had such better oomph to the bass and percussion. These versions don't have as much power.
Oomph as in the Roblox death sound? What does oomph even mean, anyway?
This version of Bloody Tears is so much more striking and powerful and awesome. All the FDS ones are far superior in my opinion. The NES versions are just weak.
The FDS versions all sound much more tinny than the NES versions. "Bloody Tears" is better than other tracks, but "Dwelling of Doom" is plain annoying.
Is it just me or the FDS is 8 bit but it has a different sound chip?
It’s the same sound chip. Just an extra channel with different sound capabilities.
Why does the sound font make me think of ancient Japan rather than Romania?
Yes, this version sound a little creepier but that doesn't mean much when the two songs you hear most of the game (Bloody Tears and Monster Dance) have terrible intros. And overall, the soundtrack feels like it needs a little more detail like in the Overseas version. Not to it's bad but it was clear that it needed more polish.
Hearing the Famicom version of Castlevania 3 compared to the NES version them coming to check this out i was surprised the NES version was better.
Bloody Tears, noooooooo...
all special sound chips on NES, you can find it from here----famitracker.com/wiki/index.php?title=Sound_hardware
8:05: You Lose!
The FDS music instruments sounded like 16-bit.
0:42. 2:59
Japanese players got a more advanced, but terrible-sounding soundtrack along with atrocious loading times. For once, we were lucky!
+Olivier Cadieux They got useful in-game text from both villagers and books. I don't think we were so lucky. In fact, that ruined the game more than the japanese soundtrack. Don't know if we can say the same of the loading times.
God, this game needs an URGENT remake.
+Andreu Martí Ever heard of Castlevania II: Remastered? It's a fan-made hack that fixed everything
Yes, I've heard about it. I think it was also made on GameMaker Studio?
Olivier Cadieux No, It's a hack put on a real NES ROM.
Oh, I thought you were talking about Castlevania II Revamped, not redaction, which are two different ROM hacks! ^^
なつかしー、当時幼稚園児だったが、難し過ぎてクリアできなかったわ
This Famicom version is better than nes version. 💗
RODO RORA DA!
ブラッディティアーズって随分初出が古かったんだね。
I'm sorry Japan, but my ear drums can't tolerate this version.
There's just something satisfying about rich primitive chiptunes an old, low-channel 8-bit chip produces. Midis just feel horrible by comparison. Same reason why I can't stand something like Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire's music compared to RG/GS.
Although some soundtracks (Metroid) are the same with more depth, so it's hard to say.
It could be the mixing of the FDS's wavetable. Grad1u53 does make some channels louder than what they were originally on the NES, like the DPCM channel which was used for drum samples. It might sound better playing this on an actual FDS.
How can this music come from an 8 bit console?!
The famicom sounds better then the NES.
Title Screen- NES version is better
Town Music- FDS
Bloody Tears- NES
Monster Dance- FDS
Mansion - NES
Dracula's Castle- FDS
Final Boss- FDS
Ending- No preference
Game Over- FDS
It's funny reading a lot of the comments on here. People who grew up with the NES who said they loved it, now say it's the worst console of all time after playing and hearing the tunes from the FDS games.
Bunch of friggin turncoats, the lot of you.
I like this version and the NES version equally. Some tunes sound better on here, some sound better in the N.A release.
I figured the JP version was going to blow the US version out of the water as far as soundtrack goes like it did with Castlevania 3. Surprisingly the US version of this is superior to the JP version soundtrack. This one sounds so Mono for some reason.
Bloody Tears = Bloody Ears
This music looks like it's from super nintendo
The NES version sounds better to my ears. The added FDS channel has interesting possibilites but I don't think it's used to its full potential. Dwelling of Doom, my favorite track from CV2 is kinda dull on here. The two tracks I kind of like here are Silence of Daylight and the Dracula fight theme.
Late reply, but CV3 (Akumajo Densetsu) did it right with the VRC6. Except that sawtooth wave was a bit too powerful.
Bloody Tears' hook is just not as good here.
yeh, I Iike the NES soundtrack better
fds
I don't know what happened to this... Monster Dance beginning sounds awful.
Defta Adrian yea this shit is terrible
The Naming screen came from fucking satan, it's in katakana and it has that damn song...
Silence of Daylight has that awful effect when you overlay two identical square waves on top of each other.
On the other hand I think the beginning of Bloody Tears is pretty good.
Yikes. Your title is all messed up. The name of the *original* version is "Dracula II: Noroi no Fuuin". It was released for the Famicom Disk System and the title translates to "Dracula II: Seal of Curse". Guess what it does _not_ translate to?
Fds is much better
Finally someone with sense
"This game sucks"
-AVGN
I expected more after listening to castlevania 3, this is just awful.
Castlevania 3 was from an advanced chip, the VRC6. THis is just raw FDS sound.
ゲーム自体は傑作の前作と比べたらマジでクソゲー。ととんまくんのパパのBGMだけがやたら良いのは悲しい。
This sounds super lame compared to the NES version, I guess we won that one. But CV3 on the other hand...
EWWW.
