I lived through both. Never dreamed I would experience such a day twice in my lifetime.

I'll never forget this day, me and my cousin both watched in absolute shock as a Tornado ripped through Tuscaloosa, live on local TV there. I pray for everyone that was affected by this outbreak, which I do agree, is a Super Outbreak

The thing that boggles my mind is that with all the advances in technology, yet the death toll in 2011 is about identical to 1974.

Actually you should take that as a compliment, because during the overnight hours there was a round of storms that knocked out the power to like over 250,000 people

There was a line of storms, with heavy winds and embedded tornados, that struck Alabama that early morning and caused significant power outage issues across the state. Many do believe the death toll in Alabama could be lower if these morning storms didn't cause the power issues leading into this massive outbreak.

What the outbreak or this discussion on the weather channel? You can watch the coverage of the outbreak in MS on the channel Matt Laubhan. And in Alabama on the channel and 33/40 weather.

This certainly in my mind will go down as the worst tornado outbreak in my lifetime and I'm hoping it's the only one. That day when I turned on the Weather Channel and saw the parameters that make up SLIM, Instability was off the charts, Lift was off the charts, Moisture was off the charts, but the trigger and wind shear was WAY OFF. It made me sick, and I live in Pennsylvania and was keeping my friends safe that day and watching the Weather Channel tracking every single storm down to the Gulf Coast. I was thinking that a Super Outbreak could happen again, but that it would be a 1 in 50-75 year event, and if this is any indication from these two events, it is possible to have several Super Outbreaks. The criteria for me when it comes to a tornado outbreak to earn the title of Super are the following:1.) All the conditions that make up the acronym SLIM have to be extremely high.2.) The number of confirmed tornadoes in the 24-hour period doesn't have to be enormous, but if it reaches close to 150 in a day, it's that.3.) The amount of violent tornadoes (EF4-EF5) has to be high. 2011 saw fifteen (11 were EF4, and 4 were EF5) and that's the third most amount. The 1965 Palm Sunday Outbreak saw 17 F4's (six are disputed and could have been F5), and obviously 1974 has the most with 30 (23 F4's and 7 F5's).4.) Weather system and tornadoes must cover a large expanse of several states.5.) Death toll does not come into play, it was just unfortunate that in 2011 it hit an area where basements were not common.6.) Tornado damage path lengths do not play a key, as long as a supercell keeps dropping one after one as a family you have a substantial path of destruction.

I will never forget it here in Alabama. I am in Athens, and we watched the Hackleburg tornado come through Tanner/Athens, and watched debris fall from the sky. I won't ever forget about the tornado sirens going off almost constantly for Limestone County and how eerily calm it was before the big tornado came through. So name memories. It felt like a powder keg was ready to be lit when I had gone into work at 2pm. I remember the damage around my house and when I was running home, tasting the pine scent, literally, because all the forest around where I lived was leveled. It was so scary to be outside right after the tornado and hearing all of the emergency sirens and think, "Oh my God, someone probably just got hurt or died." It was so surreal. I hope to never see that again in my lifetime.

Actually there's what's called a generational outbreak once, roughly every 40 years. Before 1974, it was 1932. Since 1974 was before my time, I didn't have a concept of a "Super Outbreak" in my lifetime. Next outbreak of this magnitude will probably be in the 2040's or 2050's.
