What Does Core Stability Mean? | Stability vs. Strength

  • What is Core Stability? It's not the ability to have strength and it's not the ability to move through your core. It's quite the opposite. Core Stability really means the ability to resist movement. Some people even call core stability, anti-movement. For example, the ability to resist side bending is called anti-lateral flexion. The ability to resist being rotated is called anti-rotation.
In this video, I give some examples of anti-lateral bending exercises such as side planks and suitcase carries. Also, I give some examples of anti-rotation exercises such as Palloff presses.

Great video! Great explanation and something I’ve been practicing myself for a number of years. My question 🙋‍♂️ Do you have any articles referencing this? Many thanks.

Check out work by Mike Boyle and Stu McGill. In particular New functional training for sports and low back disorders. Also, kinesiology of the musculoskeletal system and the section on lumbar spine stability.

Hey i have scoliosis and my lower back left side is turning outward and my left shoulder is leaning inward, I worked out all the time with calisthenics and never noticed it, I started drinking for a long time and I feel like my muscles became weak and I think my scoliosis is progressing faster since my mid back and left side of my ribs come out almost daily, I go to chiropractic 3 times a week and all he does is put my ribs back in place. He says that it’s because my lower spine is not stable and things are moving, but this never used to happen before I started drinking, I don’t drink no more but I’m in pain everyday, is there anything I can do to stabilize left side of my lower back to strengthen the internal muscle to keep it stable from not rotating outward? It’s like everytime I walk or sit things just coming out of place every few minutes I hear pops and I feel pain a few seconds after the pops

I sent some exercises in the previous comment you made. Here it is again. czcams.com/video/dAk2Id62Bwg/video.html
If you're in that much pain, please consider that the pain is not from something being out of place. You might have a disc bulge, nerve pain, or something else. I wish I could help you more, but I do individualized treatments, meaning a full exam would be essential.
Also, look into the Schroth Method for your scoliosis.
