I do like the fact these "newish" bands need to sound like the early 80's electro-synth bands in order to sound modern and futuristc. The Eighties did it best.
Good music iscgood music. Different genre, but She & Him make great 50-60s style of music, like how The Suffragettes make surf music. I like this.
It's not because the 80's were futuristic in the first place. It's because we seem to be unable to think of something new so we have to revive sounds from 40 years ago. It's the same with clothing by the way.

I don't know why people think goths are depressed, this music is straight up jolly.
It is just the stoical knowledge that at the end death and entropy takes us and everything in this material world away
Actually SYNTH-POP and for example GOTHIC, WAVE, NEOFOLK or EBM, Industrial are very different genres. But very often all that styles will be called GOTH MUSIC or DARK MUSIC.
people confuse goth for mainstream emo. even true emo music isnt depressing. Hot topic just hyped up mainstream emo bands like the used, My chemical romance, and hawthore heights after promoting gothic culture for so long that the laymen just made the two synonymous. It's a shame really. no one rally wants to learn about the differnces in genres or subgenres, and if you try to educate them they label you as a "gatekeeper".
The people who think that goths are depressed, are the type who want easy answers to everything.
More of synth pop with emphasis on pop than hardcore syth or goth. Good tunes but like you said, more on the light side.

That opener genuinely sounds like in the '80s when it got cheaper to have big reverbs and everybody went nuts for them, but with analog sources and recording media.
