We visit Australia's oldest existing and best preserved gaol.
Richmond Gaol as it is seen today, was built over a period of 15 years. From 1825 until 1840. The oldest part of the complex is the 1825 building which provided night and day for the prisoners as well as the Gaolers. From all accounts life was a little to crowded and so over the years additional buildings were added, the Gaoler's Residence was added in 1834, the cookhouse, solitary confinement cells and women's quarters were. added in 1835. The surrounding Walls were added in 1840.
From 1877 until 1928 Richmond Gaol was utilised as the local lock up and was then closed down.
The buildings were constructed of local sandstone from a nearby quarry and built by convict labour.
The museum opened its doors in the 1940's as a historic site and visitors attraction.

My goodness me lads, imagine escaping from here, the feeling they must have had! That solitary confinement box was frightening, utterly inhumane. The lashes were sheer brutality, so sad... It's important we tell these stories however difficult they are

Hi JoJo that was so good to see Australia's oldest jail. I was amazed to hear how long it took to build though and sad to hear its got a bad atmosphere/ energy. Sounds like people in there got treated badly , men and women. Nice that it's been a museum since the 1940s though so people can get an idea of how it was then. One had to think what’s horrible life they came from, they were starving. If they behaved they were treated well, fed and when they finished their sentences they were given a grant of land. Not that I want to have been in that situation Steve. It would have been very hard and if I miss behaved, those lashes would have been the death of me. Thank you for watching. Your intros are always new and beautiful ! 👏👍 Oldest jail in Australia…wow! Must of been really hard time inside those walls… my last job before retiring was working as a instructor carpenter in a penitentiary in Laval for a total of 17 years …I was taking care of the buildings and showing the inmates what to do and how to do it . The sentences there was minimum 2 years and maximum life . It’s was very hard atmosphere and I am glad to be out of there .

This was an interesting look at a sad place. The beatings and that solitary confinement box were inhumane. Even people who deserve to be jailed for a time deserve to be treated humanely. I am glad much has changed regarding treatment of inmates in many parts of the world. Thanks for taking us along on this tour!

Sites like this are really so tragic and full of horrific history! It's quite fascinating to see how people would have been treated so badly not so long ago! Very interesting to see the site in such a different context now! It definitely looks like the kind of place I would love to visit some day!
This would have to be one of the best Convict Gaols that are still around as others have deteriorated, like Sarah Island or Port Arthur. Some people of the time said it gave these convicts an opportunity to redeem themselves, and if they behaved at the end of their sentence they would have received a grant of land. They were also fed and housed during their sentence, a far cry from the famished and poverty they were experiencing at home. It doesn't make it right though! Glad you enjoyed the video. In some cases these convicts came from a destitute life, coming to Australia wasn’t such a bad thing, they were fed, clothed, and after their time they got pause work or land. Just another way of looking at it.

We didn't get to Richmond Gaol. It is a remarkable place. We did get to Port Arthur though. Another amazing place.
When I hear about the hardships the convicts went through I think if you're a descendant of convicts it means you're a descendant of the survivors - the ones that came through those horrible experiences.
Thank you Shane. Another one to put on your list for when you travel to Tasmania. I have been to Port Arthur on two occasions, once in 1987 and the second time in 2000. They were terrible conditions, but those who behaved and served out their sentences were granted land and a future in the colony, a far better future than they had in their poverty from where they came home. An interesting tour of this forbidding place. It is always salutary to learn how people treated others in the past. It is less happy to realise that some countries still have not left such horrors behind. We are lucky to have been born into such relatively benign societies.

What a beautiful door in the intro. I actually collect photos of beautiful doors like that. You can tell there's a ton of story just by focusing on the details of these buildings. Solitary confinement like that sounds like a nightmare. 😞 Tough times for these people.
