    Synopsis:
The operetta “Carneval in Rome” appeared on March 1, 1873 as the Waltz King’s second stage work at the Theater an der Wien. The work, which its composer consciously brought close to comic opera, in which waltz melodies in no way determined the character of the music, was received with approval, but did not have the expected success. By 1894 it had appeared on the stage of the Theater an der Wien 81 times. For the overture to “Carneval in Rome”, Johann Strauss, who was supported by Richard Genée with his theater experience, skilfully used the following motifs from the operetta: The short, powerful opening is formed by the chords from the 3rd finale to the text “Carneval "We praise you"; the atmospheric Andantino con moto is a short duet from No. 4/1. Final taken. The mysterious Moderato comes from the duet No. 15 (“Of those ladies all”) and leads on to the waltz melody from No. 8 (quintet in the second act, “The God who dies”); The Allegro non troppo leading to the end of the overture provides a lively climax in the second finale as a drinking song (“Tra la la la la - fire is in the foaming pearl wine”). The overture concludes with a powerful Stretta (Allegro vivace). Johann Strauss himself conducted the premiere of the operetta in the Theater an der Wien on March 1, 1873; The first concert performance of the overture took place on March 25, 1873 by Eduard Strauß in the Musikverein.
    Text: Prof. Franz Mailer
