Premier Guitar’s John Bohlinger hung out with Ben Harper and his long-time guitarist Jason Mozersky before a gig at Nashville’s revered Ryman Auditorium. Harper and Mozersky took PG through a slew of truly one-of-a-kind axes and amps going well over an hour.
Ben Harper tours with this Asher Mozo Custom (which is co-guitarist Jason Mozersky’s signature model) that’s loaded with a ’53 Tele pickup in the bridge and a Charlie Christian pickup in the neck, both made by Seymour Duncan. All of Harper’s electric guitars are strung up with D’Addario EXL115w (.011-.049) strings.
This early 2000s Fender Custom Shop Telecaster is in the boat for when Ben Harper needs some old-school twang. He obtained this from Magpie Salute guitarist Marc Ford in a straight-up swap. Ford really liked one of Harper’s single-pickup Teles, so the two made a deal on the spot.
Ben Harper pulls no punches when it comes to his amps. For this run, he used a pair of Dumble creations. This one was the eighth Dumble ever made! He got it from one of his early mentors, David Lindley. The head runs into two 12 Celestion speakers, one housed in a tweed Glasswerks cab and the other is in the green Dumble combo.

Definitely the best right now rundown ever. Ben harper and John did so great in this. Love the passion and the music
THIS IS THE BEST RIG RUNDOWN!!! BEN HARPER ROOOOCKS MAN!!!
LOL i was about the write the same thing!!!
So much respect to Ben Harper for going SO in depth. Dude is so proud of his guitar(s) that he'll show you the circuit. His technique and tone are monumental! It's really fun to see Bohlinger trying his best to steal licks off of someone in real time. I love his enthusiasm.
Ben's a true artist, not only spending his time explaining this stuff, but also reflecting how passionate he is about his music.
And taking dumbles out on the road, even cooler!
Held the door for this. Ben really seemed to enjoy this and John is so good at these. This was a fun one.
agree , jb is the best
JB is a national treasure, if not now, someday.
what a treat!
I love rig rundowns, thanks PG, please keep them coming! John is doing a great job. I could watch these all day.
Best rig rundown I’ve seen. Two guys, forgetting about the clock, just loving what they do.... thank you.
Yes sir
Best Rig Rundown so far!!!!
Love that when a huge artist is humble and passionate to show his gig himself and demonstrate his sound these last 15mn are absolutely priceless
damn, that black asher with the paf's is absolute fire... massive fan of ben's for well over a decade now... supremely talented dude!
Ben is such a humble man, kind, generous, loving and extremely gifted. I've had the privelidge of meeting him and he is a true gentleman.
Thanks PG, that was a treat...
I’ve watched every rundown I’m a metal head at heart but when Ben started playing I like literally started crying what an Awsome musician
I definitely can feel that too!!!
much love
"No reverb, no delay, just ... good for you, man."
he has many, and used many, google it. now he playing roots blues, it comes rough as it is. no mods.
yes! :D ahahah true!!!
Ben Harper, no delay? 🤣
He has projects that he doesn’t do as much of the lead playing he used to, but he still uses delay if he’s with the Innocent Criminals and some of his solo work.
He has another guitarist doing the effects on this project.
John is just so goddamned wholesome. Lol
Love that guy!
I don't know, man ... but I can hear a very loud reverb.
One of the best rig rundown to this date ! Wonderful player ! And what a rig...
I saw him a few months back in africa alone just him circled by maybe 5 or 6 guitars telling stories and being so humble and cool the guy is just who he is, and of course his singing and playing speak for itself. all the best to you Ben for your gift to the world.
That was amazing. Ben Harper's voice and slide tone is the most familiar sound I have in my life. I started listening to BHIC in 99 when I was 10 after my sister brought home Burn To Shine. My hero.
That was incredible. Seriously.
Best Ever Rig Rundown. Thx John.
Thats beautiful
This is one of my all-time favorites - rundown and artist.
Ben is amazing! His thumb technique is spot on & the way he is able to play these melodious accents & blend the 2 techniques together is just crazy good.
John...you're the best man. Thanks for another great video.
Wonderful personalities, anecdotes, instruments, playing, and camerawork! Very enjoyable! Thanks!
One of the best Rig R. ever. Well done Mr.Bohlinger, and Ben H. is such a gentleman, as opposed to the internet/youtube haters.
Love it! I've been hearing Ben Harper since Marc Ford was playing with him. Great Rig Rundown guys!
A wild Brazilian appears 😆
Wow!
Surprised how much I enjoyed this rundown.
What a gracious person Ben was and super rad to boot!
I bought several guitars from Ben's mom at the music store he mentioned. Very kind lady and fair prices on guitars
How pure that John gets to catch Ben just before a show. You can tell he is getting into his element.
Definitely my preferred rig rundown… the only one I watched several times.
Thanks
Awesome Rundown, Thank you guys!
OMG what a guitar player...!!!!!
Epic!
Greatest Rig Rundown
This was an awesome rig rundown. Great job at getting all the cool/historic details John!
One of the best rig rundowns ever
LOVE this rig rundown, i'm sooooooo chuffin inspired. THANKS...!!!!
Love the guest showing his chops, super interview, love your respect John!
Sick!!!
Really wish these Rundowns were done with the room mic, the little tastes we get between mics sounds so good
Absolutely beautiful!
Ben is such an inspiration.
John is spot on it is a treat for the audience to get to hear the Dumbles and Ben's genius too!
I instantly went online to try and catch him in Austin but he is touring overseas. Hopefully I will get to see him sometime.
Thank You Premier Guitar
Until now I had totally missed out on Ben Harper. I'd heard the name, knew nothing of his music. First, he seems like a super cool dude; secondly, he is wonderfully musical, but still rocking; lastly, Bohlinger had the sense to let Harper run free and share his world. Well done to all involved.
I don't want to have too many words to say how f**g COOL this show is. John, you looked like a kid in a candy store watching Ben playing through his Dumbles. So great!
Wow, this was so good, what a great guy with awesome gear. If that’s not good enough there’s John who really appreciates the gear and stories behind it. One of the best episodes so far, a joy to watch. Thanks so much guys.
What an amazing player!
Awesome Ben is great 🎶🎶☮️
Masterful playing Ben...I'm waiting for that all guitar record!
Thats great!
33:41 "Stick to guitars!" This man deserves his own Rig Rundown!
What a top human being - legend!!!
Best rundown ever!
This is awesome
Wow !! Premier Guitar guys... you just shoot another gem !! Another Rig Rundown top five right here !! You can feel the passion for guitars here and that is taken to the sky when an incredible and talented artist like Ben Harper is so humble and takes the time to speak of the subject we all love ! My admiration for Ben now has grown even more, if that is possible !!
PS. Bohlinger is great here too as usual.
Ben is a gentleman and true artist. Blessed up.
John "they got it right the first time" Bohlinger
One of best persons in the world and one of best players in the world, but most of all lovely human being.
Best episode of the year 😍
hands down best rr EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i hae watched this like 4 times
Wow it seems like a lifetime ago I was watching half arsed Rig Rundowns with shitty audio and eve worse camera work. I think it speaks volumes that artists like Ben Harper care to give PG the best that he can give. You guys are doing something right and now you have the recipe nailed. As much as we all miss Rebecca...:)
Thanks ... we think?? (Much love)
mmmm...Rebecca....what happened to her?
jon smith she got sick of weirdos like you commenting about her
I like attractive women as much as the next guy. But I sure as hell don’t watch rig rundown for a set of boobs. Plenty of other websites for that. Rebecca’s interviews were good but it’s not like they were so incredibly fantastic that we should still be asking about her years later....
I loved her knowledge.plus she was charismatic and polite.she was great looking too.its like looks plus intelligent guitar knowledge....that's deserves an mmmmm..Rebecca.I love John Bolinger but he wont be getting an "mmmmm" from me haha
amazing
Living Legend
WOW!!
Ben Harper!!!!....this is my favorite RR to date!!
Holding doors to finish the rig rundown!
I love these videos!
awesome rundown ben harper rules
Hands down. Tone, GEAR, Generosity, comedy? The coolest vibe, even Bolinger redeemed himself and engaged with the artists and their gear. That was worth the price of admission
OMG! So good! Such a cool dude and great sounds!!
I just saw Ben with Jack Johnson live at the Gorge amphitheater in Washington State - what a show.
Ben is such a great & humble guy!
love that playing
I'm a guitar tech in Hawaii and I recently got to do a left handed conversion on a 1920s Koa Weissenborn.
The thing sounded *AMAZING*
I'd been wanting to play one since I saw Ben talking about them on TV 15-20 years ago.
Cliche Guevara, I got to meet and chat with David Lindley during intermission at a gig back in the 1990s. At that point he had stopped bringing his original Weissonborns out on the road because of the high value and fragility. He was using copies that were being made in Mexico and imported by Berkley music ( cost was about 600 bucks then). He let me hold one and it was literally featherweight, just a big resonating box of air. Lindley said he would set them up individually and tweak the string heights at the nut and the bridge until the guitars really sang.
Man. I don't know much about Ben Harper, but this was really cool. Ben seems cool as hell. I am going to check out some of his stuff now.
Ron Garza
Make sure to check his live stuff from the mid and late nineties, in the Innocent Criminals lineups.
When he jams that lap steel, or weissenborn, it's pretty intense. Great player.
@@CorbCorbin I mean he still destroys it in Relentless7,if not more.
Those patterns inside the silver lap steel are the tooling marks from a CNC if anyone wants to know.
Love Ben and the only guy who could do justice to this interview - JOHN!.....nuf said.
Man, Ben Harper is a legend. I grew up with his stuff and learnt guitar to Diamonds On The Inside..super humble dude too and a beast musician!
I loved those Pudge Zeppelin gigs! Been following Jason since the mid 2000s when PZ would play after Oliver Future (with mostly the same lineup).
Good one.
The "Bill" Jason is talking about is Bill Webb. He's out of Austin, Texas and is one of the BEST amp guys there is. We call him "Billy God" here because he's so good. Absolutely great guy too. Everybody likes him for a reason.
i dont even listen to his music and im blown away by how good ben is
This deserves more views.
How great is Ben? So talented!!!
I was recently roaming the mean streets of Bend, Oregon when a bearded young man wearing tight fitting trousers approached me and said “Hey Bro, have you heard that Ben and Marc swapped teles? It’s fantastic.” I looked at him, smiled and said “Little man! I have no idea what you are talking about but thank you for your passion.” And then went about with my day.
I really like Harper. Seems like a good guy. Got a lot of warmth about him.
I'm pretty sure each and every stringed instrumentalist at least owns, if not exclusively uses, at least one Boss pedal tuner. I have three, one for my electric bass rig, one for my electric guitar rig, and one for my acoustic rig.
Man, the detail and clarity from that Dumble/black Asher combo is just RIDICULOUS.
Big fan of Ben -- had no idea what a gear nerd he is -- excellent stuff.
So Coolllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll!
Jason is a genius and a nice dude.
Blues trombone and Charlie's blues saxophone.
I'd like to see Ben's Innocent Criminals setup. That's where he uses more effects. I especially wonder what he was running in the 90s, when I saw them play a few of the best performances of my life. He had some heavy distortion, with feedback, with one foot on the volume pedal and one on a wah, then maybe a uni-vibe pedal.
This is the Musselwhite setup, so it's quite different.
But, he often seems to be holding back so much, when you're at the show. I mean it's not a jam band, but when he has space to build up for a couple minutes, he plays as good as anyone, in my book.
Gotta love Ben, legend.
jesus christ his tone is amazing
Best RR by far. As a listener I can see the connection between Ben's music/style and a straight line back to his heritage and where the blues came from. Right fingers on strings. Left hand with a pocketknife or whatever someone could find to slide with. When Ben's gets in the moment it is literally a straight line connection with the originators. And that is like the holy grail of music moments to me. Great job, John. #benharper
I'm not sure I could love Ben Harper much more than I do =| lol Just... the man.
FYI...Those pattern lines inside his lap steel are from a CNC machine. That body appears to be CNC'd out of a solid chunk of metal (aluminum?) and those lines are marks from the spinning bit that routes out the material.
John has the best job!
John GOOD FOR YOU hahahah LOL
Greetings from Brazil!
Damn that was long....but damn that was gooood!!!
