The producers kept the character alive till the next season ,even though everyone in the real world new he had passed away.

Jim Davis was a B movie actor for most of his life and became a megastar because of Dallas. One cannot imagine anyone else playing Jock Ewing or doing a better job of doing so.

He came up at a time of westerns where he worked with all the main men of back then. He was never the lead much but he was right there with them. But for him not to be and then be such a powerhouse in Dallas show tells ya how dammm good those other guys were! All legends in my book, real actors.

This scene is so sad. Jim Davies was on deaths door with cancer at the time. He could barley walk or talk and wore a wig. He knew he would be dead in a few months and so did the rest of cast. So sad...he loved playing jock and he would had stayed with the show for years

Jim Davis had spent 3 decades as a character actor who never got his "break" despite doing some outstanding work, particulary on GunSmoke, where he appeared over a dozen times as different characters. When Dallas became a phenomenon, both in the US and world wide, he was COMPLETELY dedicated to the show, old school to the end, the show must go on, he literally would have worked till the last day of his life if they'd asked, loyal to the show and audience that made him a star.

From all of the interviews that I've seen of him it seems to me that his career was going very well until him and Bette Davis did a movie that flopped. I get the impression from him that it was something that he never completely recovered from that. He was a good actor. He was never out of work for any great length of time but after that movie things were never quite the same for him. Also, It seems to me that there was not a huge difference between Jim Davis and Jock Ewing. I think that Jim Davis was a "Mans Man" just the same as Jock Ewing. He was no oil tycoon in real life but he was worth millions upon his death. I'll say it this way: His wife didn't have to worry about going out and getting a job at Walmart whenever he passed away.

I hate this scene because it was goodbye to Dallas's patriarch. Jim Davis showed that he was just as strong and tough as Jock Ewing by the way he fought cancer right until the end. Certainly, a tear-jerking moment. Davis looked immense. Tall and lean with a gravelly voice, he was also a gentleman and a master of fair play. There was actually a greater age gap between him and Barbara Bel Geddes than there was between BBG and Hagman. Hagman was 9 years younger than BBG. Davis was 13 years older than the legendary stage and screen actress and author. Crazy to think that Duffy,Principal, Gray, Kanaly, and Priscilla Presley have all already outlived Jim Davis by a fair few years but looks so much younger than he did just a few months shy of his 72nd birthday in 1981. So loved Dallas. Respect from England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

    Godfather vs Dallas.
Similarities between the Ewing and Corleone sagas:
The story begins when the youngest, purest son (Bobby/Michael) of a powerful, corrupt family (the Ewings/the Corleones) brings home an outsider as his true love (Pam/Kay). The family patriarch (Jock/Vito) is a formidable self made man. The eldest son (JR/Sonny) is ambitious, unpredictable and anxious to prove himself, the middle son (Gary/Fredo) is weak and eventually "exiled" from the family. There is a fourth, "honorary" son (Ray Krebbs/Tom Hagen) who is fiercely loyal to the family but nonetheless remains an outsider, and a disenfranchised female family member (Lucy/Connie).
Bobby/Michael resists becoming involved in the family business, but is forced to take control after an assassination attempt on JR/Vito. Following his father's death, Bobby/Michael becomes further sucked into/corrupted by the family business, and eventually Pam/Kay leaves him. He has another wife (April/Apollonia) who is brutally murdered on their honeymoon in Europe (France/Italy) by international enemies of the family business. Bobby/Michael returns home to avenge her death.
The Next generation has a Villain-John Ross/Vincent and a good guy- Christopher / Anthony
Both families have enemies: The Corleones have The 5 fasmilies and Hyman Roth. . The ewings have cliff barnes, Nicholas, Jeremy Windell.
Bothfamilies have allies The Corleones have: Clemenza, neri and Tessio The Ewings have Punk Anderson, harv Smithfield, Clayton farlow and marilee stone.
The way the house is set up in the original DALLAS mini series is very reminiscent of the Nevada compound where the Corleone family live in "The Godfather Part 2". This, in turn, was based on the famous Kennedy compound of the 1960s.
