  • This was a first for me and I wasn’t really sure what to expect! A two hour journey from Liverpool to Preston! On a bus!?! And why, when it is so much easier on the train?
Well come with me on this trip and we’ll find out! I’ll show you the inside of the bus (both upstairs and downstairs), the facilities on board, the sights (there are some, i can assure you) and i’ll talk about the best use of your money if you too decide to do this journey yourselves. Who knows, we might even stop off at Southport on the way!
Thanks as always guys for taking the time to watch my videos. Id love to hear your comments on this one! And of course, likes and subs (if you don’t already subscribe to the channel) are massively appreciated. It makes a big difference to me and your support is the absolute reason why i do this.
    Cheers for now.

Top deck. I LOVE busses, especially upstairs. I have a car so rarely use public transport but it takes me right back to my childhood when we didn't have a car so used busses all the time even to go to Bournemouth on holiday most years. Took my daughter on a bus last year & we had great fun bobbing about.

Cheers Bea, yep I have a car myself but just find it easier to jump on public transport - especially with the £2 fare cap atm. So cheap, you can’t really go wrong👍

I live in Preston (by chance - I am not a native Lancastrian) and gave up driving a few years ago. The bus services to and from Preston bus station are pretty darned good; I travel all over the north-west and further afield with ease and pleasure - usually for free on my bus pass. I think it's a great pity that bus travel is so 'looked down upon' by many - yes there are issues as nothing in this world is perfect, but all I can say is 'try it and see'. From Preston there are lots of interesting routes and surprising destinations - with very pretty scenery and even stunning views on some of them.

    • @LetsMakeaTrip
      @LetsMakeaTrip  Před rokem +1

Yes I agree Lizzie, people should try the buses more often - especially from somewhere like Preston which I believe was the biggest bus station in Europe at one point! There were certainly lots of buses when I was there. I went down to Ormskirk on the bus afterwards. Yes I could’ve got the train down to Crewe but thought I’d try something different. Thanks for the comment 😊👍

Back in the days that this route was covered by Ribble (X27) it extended beyond Preston to Skipton. Long journey but a very useful connector for those of us in north L'pool suburbs.

Thanks to the £2 bus fare offer on the majority of buses in England until the end of June this year, I managed to ride this full whack Preston to Liverpool (opposite direction to you) for just £2 which is a steal, although 2h25m definitely is quite long (especially given I needed a wee for the last half-hour of the journey) even on a luxurious bus like this. Safe to say, I got the train back (bagged a £5 advance an hour before departure) cos one way was long enough! However, the bus route is still extremely useful for connecting Preston to Southport (which doesn't have a direct rail link) and the other seaside towns and suburbs of North Merseyside. This bus service is definitely better with the day ticket so you can break your journey at Southport (like you did), which is certainly miles better on a sunny day, then travel onwards to Blackpool or Lancaster & Morecambe.

Very interesting. Preston bus station, opened in October 1969, was once the largest in Europe with 80 stands. Not sure that this still applies since the 2017 refurbishment which has reduced the number of stands to just 40.

I have fond memories of the Ribble bus station but, small point, it was actually called Renshaw Street.
It may have been a shed but at least it was a two-storey shed. In usual operation local services used the low level whilst longer distance and excursion services the much quieter upper level.
I once came across a Paris, rear platformed bus sitting in a spare bay on the upper level ?1968. This was so incongruous that it bothers me still!

One of my local routes, just a seven minute walk from home. A handy bus into Liverpool as it gets there earlier than the first Merseyrail train. It was a half hourly frequency prior to lockdown, but since then it's been mostly hourly.
There are three bus routes between Southport and Liverpool. X2, 47 and 300. 47 mostly follows the X2 while the 300 dips into West Lancashire and then via Maghull and Aintree into Liverpool. It's a longer journey, but takes you into the countryside.
Stagecoach also run the 2 from Southport to Preston, 315 to Ormskirk (handy during the Arriva strike for going to Ormskirk hospital for appointments) and recently the 347 to Chorley, previously a Holmeswood service.

I'm originally from the Surrey/SW London area, on the boundary for TfL buses into Surrey. We moved to get away from the inner M25 madness. I can't drive anymore so use public transport. We chose Southport for the access to places like Liverpool, Manchester, Preston and further afield to Yorkshire and Derbyshire while having the countryside on our doorstep. Compared to many parts of the country we aren't badly served, although there are still many pockets that are isolated if you can't drive. The Merseytravel pass is great to, available from 60 and it covers the bus, train and ferry. The disabled pass is valid all day every day. I've found the Alexander Dennis Enviro buses to have probably the worst suspension going, and they definitely rattle a lot, regardless of how many passengers are on Board.

What I would say with regards to bumpy ride as well as the poor road quality in Liverpool is the chassis. The Scania deckers (especially the N250UD chassis on this bus) do seem to ride firmer as oppose to a double deck Volvo or Wright integral chassis (pre Wright StreetDeck). When this route was first introduced a number of years ago, Volvo Plaxton Premiere? Coaches were used, not long after that 3speed Voith Volvo Olympians and then a batch of PX58/09 registered N230UD Scania’s on classic Alexander Dennis body prior to the bus you have travelled on recently. I do however think despite the ride quality Scania’s are a great inter urban bus chassis but on comfort Volvo was/is ahead of the game.

I have only used the X2 service going from Liverpool to Southport, never the full run to Preston. First time using the service, was only a couple of weeks ago actually. I was going to see a movie in Liverpool, and the Merseyrail trains were finishing early due to the rail strikes (which I only found out after getting on the train). Having to get back to Southport late, the X2 was the only service left for me. I got it around 21:00, and it took around 50 minutes from Liverpool to Southport. The journey was pleasant, and I can also verify that the ride is indeed bumpy while still around the Liverpool City area. As this was the last service of the night too, the bus was not as busy as I thought it would have been. Must have been around 8 people in total on the service, and only 4 (including myself) took the service to Southport.

Great job on this video Mark! In my opinion not only one of Liverpool's best bus routes however one of the most comfy as well! I must say and I don't know if you agree however the seats on the X2 to me personally look and feel more comfortable than the Megabus coaches that Stagecoach also run! I have done the entire route on 2 to 3 occasions and I rather enjoyed it, sometimes I'll get on the X2 to Formby for the shops and again a very pleasant journey all round.
Strangely I do also notice the X2 bus service advertised on Megabus's website if trying to travel from Liverpool towards the direction of Preston, I would be very interested if Stagecoach would consider extending the service from Liverpool/Preston to Liverpool/Blackpool potentially? I don't see why not especially as they have reduced the frequency of the X2 which is not ideal, I would still also like to see a return of a bus service connecting Liverpool to Manchester via St Helens or Warrington as the distance is similar and does not feel impossible, it would prove useful especially if the trains continue to be an unreliable method of transport and if Liverpool can be connected to as far as Preston by bus? Then why not Liverpool to Manchester?

I rode this bus everyday for a few months. Your correct about the seats but I'm afraid from there it definitely goes downhill as a bus service. Firstly, you must have been lucky as most of the time it is full rubbish such as cans of coke and crisp packets everywhere. Also, do not sit at a table seat as youths always put their feet on the opposite seat when they sit at a table (yuck!). Well about the rattling I presume the roads in England are so bad that the shock absorbers have failed and Stagecoach has refused to replace them. Plus the design of the bus makes the rattling and jarring worse because most of the seats have their stop buttons built into the back seat therefore most seats don't have any metal tubing going to the ceiling (like on the old buses) and this tubing help support the seats from shocks and jarring caused by bad roads. The older buses that are sometimes used to cover a breakdown don't bump and rattle half as nearly as bad. Also as you have found out most of the drivers are monosyllabic if your lucky - most of them just make grunting sounds. I used them for a month straight last November and had three chest infections on the bounce because of a lack of ventilation once again caused by the bad design of these buses. Basically the windows only open either full or closed and most people keep them closed in the winter because even it you open one its like the North Pole. Also, during my time on the bus over last winter I can't recall a bus that had any sort of heating. Stagecoach are cheap for a reason!

The number of passengers onboard does have a slight effect on how bumpy it is.

Cheers BotNW. I wasn’t sure tbh, some say it doesn’t- I thought I’d ask the question as a novice bus user!

I've seen that bus but never been on it.Assuming that you had the time if you get the North West Explorer you could get all the way to Newcastle via Preston, Lancaster, Keswick and Carlisle.Although with the £2 fares at the moment they are probably cheaper than the Explorer.

I did wonder whether to postpone this trip until the £2 fares kicked in but then I thought that’s supposed to run out end of March so I might aswell do it with the day explorer (as per normal times). Might have a look at that North West one though, cheers 😊👍

@@singaporemick yes I heard something like that. Also, it used to be Europe’s largest bus station (or something like that). That would have been a great factoid to have added in tbf 😊
