  • Hey guys! In this video we take an abandoned dynamite vault and turn it into a library here at Cerro Gordo! I've wanted to have a library here since buying this abandoned mining town. This project was one of my favorite in all my time here. The collaborative nature of it all was so cool and made this project really happen.
Thank you all so, so much for all the continued support for the town! This place has truly came to life the last 2 years and it's been awesome to see.
ALSO! We have some new merch, check it out: store.cerrogordomines.com/

i would strongly recommend some form of pest control to prevent things like silverfish from destroying the books.
dark places are exactly breeding grounds for tiny critters like that, and books are almost entirely organic. so unless it's used on a very regular basis, i would suggest something to get rid of potential pests. especially if the purpose of the room is preservation.

And to encourage folks to bring smoking jackets back into fashion. Not sure wearing one with a pair of century-old Levis would be considered appropriate attire for a gentleman though.

As an English Librarian who works with rare/antiquarian books - some of them over 200 years old - I can give you a few quick tips on how to preserve the books you have.
Moisture is the enemy, so make sure there isn’t any water seepage coming in through those rock walls - maybe keep the shelves a little separate from the wall. Moisture in the air is also very bad so a good seal on the door is needed.
Keep away from Direct sunlight as it fades the ink and makes the pages brittle.
Avoid a space with temp fluctuations. Books don’t really care too much about hot or cold (room temp is ideal), but they don’t cope with changing temperatures well as that warps them and makes the pages wrinkled and brittle.
Bugs love to munch books - I don’t know what bugs you have in the desert but maybe keep some pest control stuff around be it fly paper or human rat traps or something.
Aaaand that’s all I have off the top of my head but feel free to ask me more here or on my insta at moth_hourbookshop ✨

There is a long way to go still, and he is going to need help. the state regulations are clear, he is going to need a reliable water source and electrical and sewage up to code. The town of Keeler is around 10 total, Rain water needs to be collected off ever roof and ground waters slowed down by swales and directed to ponds. 1000 + Plants and trees need to be planted everyday till the hills looked like before mining. This will be back the Springs, the grasses, and Animals. AWG , Mist and Solar water generators could produce 500,000-2 million liters of drinkable water every day. Update the pump on the 700 level increase the pipe size and apply heat tape to the pipes stop it from freezing and run thru heavy metal filter and UV would make it potable, but with only 1.2 gallons a hours the current setup is useless. I am going out in a few weeks and staying planting and digging swales until he throws me out.

Good to know the book i sent you has an awesome home. Its not as old, or as cool looking as some of the other books, but the contents of the book is what matters. Its about the coal mining towns near my hometown of Antioch, CA. It has a history that is tied to Cerro Gorrdo, because after Belshaw left Cerro Gorrdo he came to Antioch and established the Empire Mining company and railroad that brought tons of coal out of the Mt. Diablo foothills to the shores of Antioch to be put on barges and barged all over the west coast.

This is one of your best videos. For those of us who love books and libraries, this hit a special spot in the heart. It also reminds me of a library some Marines in my battalion made out of an abandoned space inside a hydroelectric dam in Iraq. They found some wood and one had some carpentry skills to build out the shelves. People from around America sent books to stock it. It was one of the few welcomed distractions in an austere and forbidding location. Cerro Gordo in its own way is in an austere and forbidding location and you’ve made something that the residents from generations ago would likely appreciate. Keep up the stellar work.
