  • I test knit the Boatneck Batwing Mesh Top for James N Watts, and thought it'd be fun if I dyed my yarn with madder!
Join me for a cosy video on natural dyeing and musing as I knit away at the test knit..

I do like that colour, it looks almost metallic. Knitting is still totally mysterious to me, verging on sorcery. Have some needles now, just need to find an affordable (very cheap!) source of yarn. Then, the joy of learning a new skill. Thanks for such a chilled video, all the best, Pete.

Thanks Pete! Glad to hear you're going to give it a go. I often look around charity shops, car boots or markets for affordable wool. It's good for experimenting before investing - it can become an expensive hobby..

@@threadandyarn Thank you for those suggestions! I'll have to start frequenting charity shops more - good place for fabric too.

Wait! I just noticed that you didn't mordant your fibers! Did I miss something? Your top turned out amazing! I love how it all turned out.

Hey Patti, this episode was a bit of something different if I remember right! I always mordant protein fibres with alum sulphate first, but this is a plant/cellulose fibre. You can mordant it with alum acetate or soak it in soya beforehand to add protein to the fibre. I've also got an aluminium pan which helps, though that's more effective with plant fibres than protein.

@@threadandyarn Interesting, because for plant based fibers, I first mordant in a tanin (oak galls), then mordant again in alum. I don't feel like getting alum acetate or use soy milk, since I can do an alum bath with what I have pretty easily. I suppose an aluminum pan would help. Your fibers turned out quite nice, though, so it obviously worked!

I create elaborate systems with stitch markers to keep me on track. I’m legally blind and can not see if a stitch is a knit or a purl generally. Is knitting mesh like knitting exaggerate lace? I love the color of tha fiber you dyed. Love your content💗

Hey, yes I think it is pretty much the same thing 😊 The stitch markers sound very useful. I found it tricky to get into a rhythm with it because each row was different! Glad you enjoyed the vid, thanks for watching x
