    The winner is the Yamaha MODX! Fully compatible with Montage sounds, MOTIF sounds & the DX series of FM synths, but it weighs less than half as much, and costs less than half as much!
    I just picked up a used 88 key hammer action keyboard to go along with my MODX6. They can be bought dirt cheap on the used market, and this will give me both synth/organ action and piano action, something no one keyboard is capable of.

    Nice review. My choice is the Kronos. Especially, I can get some nice International sounds for the Kronos that sound really good, that it’s not that great on the Montage. But, like you said. They’re both great keyboards, and both good choices.

    I bought my Montage Second hand from a seller thad Had The Kronos 2, Montage and Nord Stage, he kept the Nord stage, he was a professional musician. He never really used the Montage so it gathered dust with him, but sold the Kronos 2 and his Montage. I chosed the Montage because of the Boot time as you mentioned, it really makes a difference to turn on the instrument right there and then. As for the Superknob, I soon realized I won't be reaching for that Knob while having all my fingers on the keyboard, so I bought a Superknob-pedal, it can be controlled with the feet! The Montage is a BEAST to learn though, took me a good year to be comfortable with it, I can't imagine how long that would take with a Kronos wich is a much more complex beast.

    I had the Kronos 1 and now have the Kronos 2 after giving up on the Jupiter X and its little screen for my bad eyes. I got a Montage after playing the Kronos for 5 years and still have it, it is a keeper. They are premium workstations. Kronos Karma edges Montage super knob slightly but both machines are great for the solo improvisational composer. But I agree, for gigging musicians the Montage edges out the Kronos due to boot issues. My professional friends lean toward the Nord Stage with its great sounds, no Karma or Superknob but is really a premium sound for the pro player and less complex interface. Sub.

I can't find any new ones advertised for sale, but obviously Korg has stopped manufacturing them, and their Nautilus isn't a step up but a step down from the Kronos. Just found your channel. Good video. I have both keyboards. I love both. Nothing can top a Kronos. It has a 60gig hard drive and you can add a second, hence the long startup time. Its a massive computer and capable of holding multiple libraries of VST quality sounds. The Montage is limited if you plan on major expansion. The storage, and for that matter the content is just not available. The sound set on the Kronos from factory are very good, however you don't truly reach its potential until you listen to some of the libraries that are available. And yes, they are VST good especially when you get into the KAPRO libraries. They are so good its almost unbelievable that you can play sounds that good without a laptop hooked up to your board. Although I love the Montage, and the factory sounds are VERY good, the potential to expand with VST quality libraries is just not there. That being said, there is nothing the Montage can do that the Kronos Cant. There are many things the Kronos can do that the Montage cant. If I were only allowed one, it would have to be the Kronos. Its not perfect, but damn near when you overlook some of the aggravating things about it. I just bought a Fantom and tried really hard to love it. Nope. I felt extremely let down and quite disappointed. The sound set for a gigging musician sucks. Sucks so bad I cant believe they put the board out with so little work to bring the sounds up to par with Korg and Yammy. Probably will be the last Roland I ever buy. One thing we can all agree on, they are all expensive as hell.

      The Kronos has a dedicated CX-3 modeling engine that has drawbar controls, built-in rotary/chorus/vibrato effects (that don’t eat up any effects). Some complain that this, in fact, based on a now nearly 20-year-old software model, but tonewheel organs aren’t a new sound, and I still think it sounds great!

    • @n8goulet
      @n8goulet Před 2 lety +3

      Both the Montage & Kronos can make decent organ sounds, but both fall short next to a dedicated organ synth or software organ such such as the B-3X or VB3.
      While the Kronos does have a dedicated organ engine, many, many people have stated that it is clearly about the weakest one on the market of dedicate organ engines.
      From what I have found, there is a collection called Organimation available for both the Kronos & the Montage, which I tend to believe sounds about the same on both, and clearly seems to be about the best organ sounds for these synths. The Kronos version does have one advantage in it doesn't take up sample memory as the Montage/MODX version does. The Montage/MODX version has a unique feature that is handy, which is that the Super Knob has been setup to cycle through the drawbars one at a time from off to on turning right, and from on to off turning left. Also ideal for MODX users who don't have 9 sliders.
      You can get much better organ sounds on either vs older synths, but neither are going to compare to a decent modern dedicated organ synth or software.

I did find that I had to tweak the sounds I use a bit but that's to be expected. I lot of Kronos players also run through a Ventilator pedal or some thing like that. Yamaha has by factory unbelievable sounds, acustics and more realistic than Korg, the acoustic guitars, strings, choirs, saxs and drums are killers in Yamaha. • @geoffk777
    @geoffk777 Před 2 lety +1

    I agree with your conclsion, but I want to elaborate a bit. I have both, but I rarely use the Kronos. The Kronos is 10 years old now and sorely overdue for a refresh. In fact, Korg just stopped selling it, so a replacement is probably immenant. The samples often sound old, and the overall quality of sounds is less dynamic and realistic than the Montage, especially the piano and EPs. I also prefer the keyboard action on the 88-key version of the Montage over the 88-key Kronos. I should note that the Kronos can also be fragile, and really needs a case if you're going to take it on the road.
    The advantages of the Kronos are that the organ engine is much better than the Montage, so it's better as a Hammond replacement. Also, it's a full workstation, that does samplng and has a better sequencer. So these may be important to some people.
    Personally, if I were gigging all of the time, I'd consider a MODX, which has all of the Montage sounds and features, but is way lighter, cheaper, less fragile and easier to gig with. In fact, some people have a Montage in the studio and an MODX for the road.
    If you're in the market for one of these, you should also check out the Roland Fantom and Kurzweil K2700. Both of these sound great and have similar capabilities to the Kronos. In fact, I'd put the Kronos fourth, behind the Montage and these other two.
    And you're absolutely right about the ridiculous start up time on the Kronos. It's because the 10-year old CPU is so old and underpowered. If I'm feeling inspired, I definitely don't want to sit there, waiting for it to wake up.

    • @bigcdub
      @bigcdub Před 2 lety +3

      Negative... Maybe for your preference, but I have the Montage 6, and the Kronos 2, and most of the patches on my Kronos sound way better than my montage, additionally, with the 9 engines, you can endlessly create and expand sounds, not to mention the FM engines actually does FM better than Yamaha! And the sound libraries from third party vendors keep this instrument current, there's a reason you see the Kronos on stage, and in the studio more than any other keyboard... With that said, there's still a whole lot I like about my Montage also, but Pianos, EP's, and srings, Kronos is always the go-to first, and I also owned Roland Fantom G, XP-80, Korg M3, various Kurzweil's... None sound as good, have better effects, or go deep as the Kronos...

    • @geoffk777
      @geoffk777 Před 2 lety +1

      @@bigcdub Well, everybody has different preferences and the Kronos has a lot of fans (notably .Jordan Rudless). But to me, it sounds dated and inferior to the others that I mentioned. If you add a lot of new sounds, than I guess that you can make up for the deficiencies in the factory ones, but that's not a cheap exercise. As for the 9 engines, the Fantom has model expansions for organ and analog synths and a separate piano engine, so it's fairly comparable. As for the Montage, I think that the organ engines on the Kronos, Fantom and Kurzweil are an advantage for organ, but otherwise the quality of the sounds is actually superior to the Kronos "engine" sounds. For example, I prefer the Montage pianos to the Kronos piano engine and Montage EPs to the Kronos EP engine. So it's not really an advantage as far as I'm concerned.
      Frankly, I just find the Kronos workflow and interface to be unintuitive and not as nice to use as the Fantom or Montage. Not surprising, given how much older it is. Yes, it's deep, but taking advantage of it is often a chore. For example, compare the ease of layering sounds on the Kronos and on the Fantom and you'll see how much of an improvement the Fantom is.
      In any case. Korg has recently stopped selling the Kronos and is presumably finally readying a successor. It's long overdue, after 11 years. So it's likely that the replacement will be a lot more competitive and address a lot of the complaints that I have with the current model. In the meanwhile, if you like the Kronos, than more power to you. I'd encourage anyone buying a flagship workstation to try them all and decide for themselves which one they prefer. But, for me personally, I still rank it dead last after Roland, Yamaha, Kurzweil and, probably, Nord.

    • @bigcdub
      @bigcdub Před 2 lety +1

      @@geoffk777 Sound is subject to the person listening, and per your own admission, your observation is solely yours, nobody else would categorize the Kronos as “dead and inferior” related to any other keyboard, also your assumption of the factory sounds in the Kronos as being “deficient” is laughable at best. But for the sake of someone who doesn’t know any better, let me assure them that this is totally untrue… As much as I love my Montage, it still uses the same AWM2 technology from the last generation, the Fantom still uses the same SRX tech, and the Kronos has 9 different Sound engines, the piano alone has 12 different velocity curves it’s sampled at and is 6GB. Additionally, the Kronos is a true Workstation, whereas my Montage is a synth. Anybody out there looking to get one of these for sound quality in patches alone, I implore you do demo both keyboards, then thank me later…

    • @geoffk777
      @geoffk777 Před 2 lety

      @@bigcdub I agree that potential buyers should try out everything, although they'll have to buy a used or demo Kronos at this point. As for your other conclusions, lets just say that I won't convince you and you certainly haven't convinced me. Yes, the Montage uses AWM2 sampling, but it has a completely new sample set. You can compare them with the old Motif samples (also included) and hear how much improved they are. Meanwhile, the Kronos still has its original 10 year old samples. The Fantom includes the SRX sounds as free downloadable expansions, but the main Zen Core sound set is also completely new.
      Your point about the Kronos being a full workstation is legitimate, and it is a better sequencer and sampler than either the Fantom or Montage (although the Kurzweil is pretty close). For many people, DAW integration matters more now than built-in workstation capability, and here the Fantom and Montage are better than the Kronos. But if you really want to do everything without ever using a computer at all, than the Kronos has an advantage.
      Like I say, it is obviously a personal preference at some level. I have both and strongly prefer the Montage. CDub has both and strongly prefers the Kronos. So it's very much an individual reaction that you need to decide for yourself.

      @@geoffk777 Yes we both agree, to disagree on the sound perspective of both. My point was actually for someone out there who is interested in obtaining a Kronos, as opposed to the Montage. Also, the only thing new about the Fantom sound engine is the name, and a few extra algorithms, definitely sounds inferior to both Kronos and Montage, and remember, the Kronos has 9 hardware sound engines completely independent from one another, the sound programmability far exceeds my Montage, or anything the Fantom can conceive, and this isn’t just my observation, all three you can definitely come up with any new sound you like, but Kronos is just in a league of its own, not trying to convince you of anything, just stating facts for others.

    About the startup time of the Kronos, you said "4 minutes and 45 sec" That's not true. It's about 1min and 30"/ 2 minutes according to the number of auto load sample banks.
    Last thing : today, a professionnal musician could not buy a Kronos : it is not available anymore !!

      Sorry for the misunderstanding. Perhaps you misheard me, I did not say the start-up time was 4 minutes and 45 seconds. That would be a nightmare., lol! If you go to about 4:30 in this video, you will hear that I said the start-up time was 1 minute and 45 seconds. I also had the stopwatch next to it to show the start-up time.

    I actually just bought a new Kronos 6 brand new last week. I had a Montage before that but sent it back for the Kronos.
    Montage - Is a monster Synth! If you play live and sequence on a MAC/PC, then the Montage is perfect. The updated sequencer is NOT ideal for serious production.
    Kronos- Monster workstation!!! The boot up time is roughly 30 seconds. I turn my Kronos on first, then my monitors and by the time I’m done, it’s already on. The sequencer is surgical and has more control. The onboard sampler is a major plus.

    It’s is too uneducated to compare a full fledged workstation keyboard, the Kronos with a mere synthesizer, the Montage.. and blaming the start up time on Kronos for it is more versatile than Montage..!! It is like comparing a ford F150 with a Toyota camry

    Any real piano player can feel the differnce between them, Korg does not have a license on real piano sounds like Yamaha, the middle C sound is totally different. Korg is trash when it comes to real piano sounds, korg is only good at digital sounds. No match!

      I was choosing a New Keyboard these days. And in every view i cannot agree with you. For me the kronos Pianos have the best Sound i've ever heard. Not to forget about the other mayor Features. Korg thought of everything here. The kronos is a beast. And i think, a Jordan Rudess f.e. would definately agree as He also plays Stage Pianos from yamaha, but you never see a yamaha Keyboard.

      @@a.h.2858 - Ok, I have been playing keyboards for some 20 years as you might have also, but I have been in churches where Yamahas and Kronos are present, I have played both of them, I actually have owned Yamaha Motiffs, trust me: Korg is only good for extra sounds like for Piano#2, adornment Keyboards in a band. I have a friend that has a Kronos, we had one in the church and there is something about the Middle C that does not sound good in even comparison to a Yamaha, Yamaha destroys Kronos 100%. but be my guess in buying one. I truely recomend to go to a guitar Center and try one out; but I have to be honest I have not played the Newest Korgs, Best wishes on your purchase !
