    Totally agree with these focal lengths. 10 years ago, when I started shooting video on DSLRs, I remember the rush to fill out my kit with cheap primes for that shallow depth of field and pretty bokeh. Now that I'm shooting way more documentary-style projects, the flexibility of a sem-fast zoom lens is unbeatable.

    I run the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 G2 which has amazing stabilization if you buy the tap-in console and change the mode to viewfinder stabilization. Then, I took part of the flange out on my 6k and put a speedbooster element in its place so that I have a 1.1x crop on my 6k instead of the super 35mm. This also helps with stabilization as it gives me a wider field of view. Not to mention an extra stop if light and shallower DOF

    • @GOLDWULF
      @GOLDWULF  Před 4 lety +1

      TimmySparrow I’ve never looked into Tamron lenses. I shoot on a Sigma 24-70 with optical stabilization and it’s not that good. I gotta look up and see what that lens is all about. Thanks for the comment.

      @@GOLDWULF Yeah I have the 24-105 art with OS from sigma and the stabilization is pretty trash for video so I can't imagine the f2.8 art being much better. I would be curious to see, though, if you have the sigma USB dock, I think you can change the stabilization to viewfinder mode just like on the Tamron, which wpuld in theory make it less jumpy. However, in my study, the Tamron G2's kill the competition for stabilization on EF because they have an entire processor dedicated to stabilization.
      Cheers!

      @@JesusIsLord182 Hmm, so in order to activate stabilization on the G2 you have to dock it and tap in? I thought you could just enable it on the lens with a switch. Just shot a series on the 11-20//18-35//50-100 combo, season 3 probably going to switch out the 18-35 for the 24-70. That 50-100 is magical to me, love the look and the 11-20 with a screw in filter in unheard of, so nothing else there to compete. Another option I've been considering with the 6K Pros is the Laowa 12mm on a gimbal and the Laowa 24-100 cine on the A-cam. Need to run tests if I'll miss the sigma promist combo and lightweight ease of use or if the Laowas will give me the look I want straight out. Regardless, that 24-70 will be a great addition to the family.

    • @GOLDWULF
      @GOLDWULF  Před 3 lety +1

      24-70 is a great lens. The IS works well and removes the micro jitters. Glad to hear things are going well. No matter which direction you go you’ll be fine. Although you’ll have more flexibility with the 11-20 over the 12mm. More weight but nothing a gimbal couldn’t handle.

    Just discovered your channel, new sub. Your video popped up in my recommended feed I've just bought the Sigma 50-100 f1.8 (after lots of research) to match to the 18-35 f1.8 that I already own and love. I always seem to pick up this lens, I just love the image. I had been carrying around a range of primes for the medium to longer focal lengths, but decided that the 50-100 will suit the way I shoot better than constantly changing lenses. The only downside is the weight of the thing, but I think I'll get used to that. What swung it for me was watching some examples of footage shot with the 50-100, and realising that it both looks beautiful and fits with the focal lengths I use most. I'd love to have a cine housing but that's outside of my budget range for now so I just use aftermarket gear rings for the follow focus.

    May i ask a question on two things about the aesthetics of the video?
    This is some of the nicer grain I've seen on a video, its not overbearing, and you can only really see it in the shadows and not the highlights, what are you using for grain and how are you applying it?

    I really wish the Tokina was as widely praised as the sigma 18-35 (basically the bmpcc kit lens now) even with the vignetting, which the sigma also suffers from between 18 and 20mm (using the viltrox ef-m2 ii. Photo lenses have atrocious focus throws that don't apply well to "cinema" use. My sigma 18-35 will hopefully just be a stand-in for an eventual mft mount Fujinon or DZO 10-20. I think there's also nothing wrong with primes if you know how you want to tell whatever story you're telling.

      It’s pretty simple actually. Super 35 is a smaller sensor than full frame. Lenses made for super 35 have a smaller image circle only allowing coverage up to a super 35 sensor. Using a lenses made for smaller sensor (super 35 on full frame) will cause vignetting (darkness around the corners) in your images. Lenses that are made for large format can be used on small sensors cause of its large image circle. Hope this helps.

    I use a Sigma 17-50 most of the time, but I feel quite often that I want that extra zoom. I rarely shot at very wide angles, so I feel that a 24-70 would be the best choice for aps-c. Though the price is a little steep for me, and I'm very worried about using that lens on a gimbal with a follow focus. The focus ring is very close to the camera and I don't think there's a way to mount the follow focus motor. Have you ever tried using a similar setup?
    Great video as always, thank you for sharing your thoughts!

      Lots of great points here. I to find myself wanting that extra telephone perspective and get that with the 24-70 but it isnt the end all be all. I've never used this lens on a gimbal because of the front lens element moves and will throw off its balance. On the filp side having built in optical image stablization is handy. When flying a gimbal I go with the 11-16.

      @@GOLDWULF Hello once again! Came back to this video after having evolved a small production company and I'm ready to just into a Sigma 24-70. Just wanted to ask how useful the OS is for video. I've used the Tamron 24-70 and VC is good when static, but quite bad during pans, tilts, etc. Do you know is Sigma's OS is better in that regard? I'd prefer a lens that's less "locked" for exchange to a smoother motion in general. Thank you!!

      @@GOLDWULF Thanks again, I was actually not satisfied with Sigma 18-35 on my Nikon as it was out of focus from the first day I bought it. Even bought the usb dock which shouold solve the problem but never managed it to correct the focus issue which I find out latter is the very common issue. I hope there is no such an issue with Canon mount.

    Totally irrelevant, but can anybody share their experience with the BMPCC cameras on a run and gun documentary setup? I am considering the S1H or either the BMPCC 4K or 6K. I don't own a easyrig or gimbal, so the IBIS, not necessary to rig, and lowlight capabilities of the S1H seems very intriguing despite I tend to like the image quality of the Blackmagic cameras better. I always rented out all my gear before, so this will be my first cinema camera if I make the purchase for either one.
