  • In today's segment I talk about my struggles with the newly purchased Canon R5. Pro's & Cons I've come across in the first week of shooting with the R5, is it really better than the Canon 90D for Wildlife Photography?
I've included a test shot comparison; can you tell which is which? let me know in the comments which one you thinks is better. Both of the images are raw files straight out of the Camera.
Stay tuned to the end where I share some edited photos from each Camera as well.

Interesting video. Currently have R7 and am considering R5. I have issues with low light being under a canopy in the summer shooting birds. Hoped the FF would do better. I just shoot jpg's so am not looking for perfect but better than R7. Your dilemma is my dilemma. New camera or new lens. I am using EF 100-400ii and have thought about the RF 100-500. Dont know if i could handle big prime. I walk a lot. thnx for the info

Hi. I know that feeling regarding expectations in quality. I bought a £2000's plus, audio interface a while ago. It sounds good. But I don't feel it's 5, 6 or even 7 times better than many good cheaper interfaces. As for the camera. I do use the 90D. I would like to upgrade perhaps once more, but it would probably be the R6 II. Thanks for your video though. The 90D video you took looks nice. Good job, Man.

Oh, remember, mirrorless cameras all tend to ‘love the background,’ so that is something to keep in mind. They all can get ‘confused’ at times, and lose the subject. Settings and technique and practice helps here. A lot of good comments and sage advice from some in here.
If you prefer APS-C, you might try the R7, and some have suggested that. I didn't think to mention that before. It is basically the mirrorless update to your 90D. Happy and safe shooting 👍

Heya. I too have both the 90D and R5. A couple of tips. Make sure you're on the latest firmware version for your cameras.
I've found the eye auto-focus gets incrementally better over time on the R5, so that's always something to keep up to date. Right
after I got the R5, I noticed an immediate improvement of image quality. I also shoot in manual, and I use auto ISO so I'm
not worrying about that setting. I will say, I had the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens with the EF 1.4 extender and
used that with great results on the 90D. I got the RF100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM and use that with the R5 and it made a huge
difference. I got the RF 1.4 extender, but don't use it because I'm not able to collapse the lens all the way like I could with
the 100-400mm. I just crop in a little bit on the R5 shots and it works great for me. You can see my work at
    www.flickr.com/photos/stevesmythe/ (hi-res) and mirrored at instagram.com/ssmythe_photog/ (low-res).

Being on a 90D Facebook page, it appears the 90D had issues from the start, such as soft focus issues with EF-S lens, and the need to Micro Adjust the AF for individual lens, all of which Canon was slow to acknowledge, of which I am not completely sure they have. I purchased my 90D at the first of this year, only to discover it's flaws after the fact (too many out of focus shots). I shoot mostly with EF L glass on that body now. I might wait another 4 years before I jump to mirrorless. They released the 90D in late 2019, and there were loads of videos trying to convince people that they would be left behind if they remained stuck with an older model, like a 70D or 80D. That has been maybe 4 years, and now they are running the same type sales tactics again. CZcams is littered with camera salesmen, trying to earn advertising dollars for giving product reviews, although there are a lot of helpful videos. Unless someone is paying you big bucks for photos, you are probably chasing illusive dreams of a perfect camera that has all of the bases covered, and will last you for a decade. It is although a fun hobby, and that is why I have chased it. I get pleasure out of getting great shots.

I just traded in my Canon M6 MII for a 90D mainly because I wanted to move away from the now defunct EF-M format and I already have some EF lenses in my arsenal. Technically the R5 that I use at work is superior, however, I really don't see that much difference in video and photo quality from the old 90D. And if one doesn't go crazy with Live View, the battery life of the 90D seems to go on forever in DSLR mode.

@10:50. If Your not using BBF, there’s a problem right there. Try setting it along with the shutter, if that helps. Nabbing initial focus and locking on using BBF ensures a higher keeper rate. Just in the interest of helping. I think You need to trade the R5 for a R6 Mark II. Don’t be ‘conned’ by the naysayers regarding that body only having 24 Megapixels. It’s a high quality sensor. Sharpness and detail has been shown to be better than the ole’ 5D4, which is 30.2. Faster Camera for shooting at high speed. Peace

@@TheWildlifeGallery388 Your Welcome, and thanks for getting back to me. 😊
Great to hear the R5 is working out for You. Canon and other Companies have made their AF systems quite good, but they come with quite a learning curve. I had a feeling You would adapt and do OK with Time.
A little Tip for You and others: Hit that ‘Q’ button when first picking up your camera. It sounds simplistic, but I watched a video where a really noted Photographer had that on his list to getting better photos. I have all too often just started shooting, only to find out I had this setting wrong, or something else. So I have made a habit of checking it out before I press that shutter button! And most ‘Q’ or ‘I’ in Nikon’s case, menus can be customized. Simple but effective and often overlooked. 😉
I think of You as the kind of Guy I wouldn’t mind shooting with. So I decided to at least join You in ‘spirit,’ and I SUBscribed. Stay well and safe and Happy Shooting.

Also EF lenses AF does not work as well as RF lenses. EF lenses struggle to AF due to dirty contacts on the RF to EF adapter and lens. Use a pencil eraser to clean the contacts. Also do not use UV filters on lenses as they take away some sharpness from any lens. Use a lens hood to protect the lens.

I hope you know that using an EF lens on the R5 only gives you 17 megapixals not 45. The RF 100 to 400 lens is only $600 and gives you the 45 megapixals and the lens is very small and light and works great.
