      Which is basically BetterHelp does: Take advantage of people, and especially those legitimately seeking help. I took one look into them earlier this year because I’m also looking for a registered dietitian and that won’t go anywhere without somebody else to probe into what’s going on with my disordered eating.
      Long story short: I told them in no uncertain terms that I would refuse to pay any money without first getting a no-risk consult with one of their counselors to see if a fit exists. They refused and tried to push me into one of their smaller packages. I said no deal and walked away.
      I consider myself lucky because I am a distrusting person who needs a listener first (I do the talking, THEN you can ask questions). You’d be surprised how many people get blinded by the lights, don’t do their homework, and get taken. No shortage of those sheep in today’s society, and I suspect that alone is the main reason BetterHelp stays afloat even though they were fined earlier this year for violating HIPAA.

And when she tried to get help for SA trauma, both of the therapists she tried straight up shamed her for not trying to fight her attacker, despite the fact that he had a knife and she was just 17. • @sunamoroll
      @sunamoroll Před rokem +76

      Yes. This problem is not at all unique to betterhelp. I think the reason it is getting so much attention is because the platform is so accessible, and also (as a result) betterhelp is a lot of people's first experiences with therapy. I have had horrific experiences with therapists both online and in person, including betterhelp. I hope the greater problem can be addressed instead of targeting and blaming one organization. That said, betterhelp should absolutely be held accountable, but so should everyone else.

    • @Discordia5
      @Discordia5 Před rokem +8

      @sunamoroll . But it's also unavoidable. People in therapy are sensitive obviously, and not every counselor is a good fit for every client.

    • @sunamoroll
      @sunamoroll Před rokem +48

      @@Discordia5 Sometimes that is the case, but there are also times when therapists actively do more harm than good. I've had some therapists who just didn't fit and made me uncomfortable, but I've also had some who were cruel, shaming and ultimately damaging to speak to. In many cases it took me years to realize that I wasn't actually the problem and I'm definitely not the only one. There is a big difference between someone who just isn't a good fit and someone who is straight up bad at their job.

    I am SO glad more people are talking about this! We were desperate to get my husband into grief counseling - his dad died last March in an EXTREMELY traumatic way. And we were just in a spiral. We had to wait until June to get an appointment with a therapist near us, but I wanted him to see someone in the meantime. That month was wild.
    The therapist he had told him he needed to forgive his brother (I don’t knock forgiveness, but it was too soon. And she made it seem like forgiving him would cure the depression), she told him that his dad was a ghost trying to reach out. And she told him he needed to read a book about men and women from the 60’s and how me being a submissive wife would cure the grief and depression.
    That last one made him go….I’ll wait until we can see a real therapist. We canceled the acct asap.

      For what it's worth, about half of the professional licensed therapists I've paid for in the past were just as batty.
      One was a psychiatrist and had me read some weird book about a guy doing a spiritual journey with an old man in a desert that was utterly pointless and unrelated to my personal issues. Another would just ask me "so what medication do you want me to prescribe?" without asking any questions first. Another tried to teach me breathing exercises, which might have been useful if I'd come to her with panic symptoms but I was there because I'd been diagnosed with an incurable and untreatable illness and just needed support. Another one who was supposed to be an expert on my particular illness didn't seem to know anything about it and I had to educate her every session.
      The only person who ever was an amazing therapist was someone who was just a guidance counselor at my college. Not even accredited or trained, she just knew how to empathize with others, actively listen and break problems down into smaller steps.
      It's scary to think about, but it's entirely possible this is just a problem with the industry in general.
      Edit: this is not meant to defend better help btw just pointing out that even professional trained therapists may also be terrible

      I’m a therapist too and I work very part time on betterhelp. I only have 3 clients on there currently. One thing I hate as a provider is the compensation. Betterhelp pays per hour, but client sessions are max 45 minutes. So for me seeing one client for 45 minutes I get paid $22. It’s not worth it for me which is why I only have 3 clients. All three of them, I have had over a year. And I’ve also had clients do some pretty crazy stuff. I had one client, that I had never seen yet, threaten me, due to a past issue with another therapist. I had a client go to the bathroom while I was speaking with them. I also had many clients who didn’t show up for sessions even when I texted them multiple times confirming. Missed session fee for me is $10. The only therapists who are successful with making betterhelp a full time job have 60-80 clients a week. So this is why therapists are late to sessions, canceling, etc. is because they overbook. On the flip side, other therapists like me have other jobs. My other job isn’t clinical so I keep clients on betterhelp just to keep my clinical skills going. There are good therapists on there, but I recommend betterhelp mostly for people with anxiety, OCD, mild depression. . .things like that. It’s just not a great platform for processing trauma, personality disorders, or emergent crises. The therapist is going to interrupt you and rush you because there is a time crunch.

Ok so the first woman straight out told me that my boyfriend didn’t love me after 30 min of our first session. If you know anything about us you would know he’s SUPER OVERPROTECTIVE. With her telling me that, we had to end the call because I couldn’t calm him down. The second therapist flirted with my boyfriend the whole time and told me “I didn’t understand him because it’s hard for a black man to to survive in America and I will never understand his battle”……. He was white man explaining to me, a black woman, about my black boyfriend battles……. Long story short we just got couples board games and started weekly date nights. I've had very negative experiences with therapy and therapists in my life, so that was incredibly rare for me. Well, on my second session, therapist basically told me she was transferring me over to someone else because she thought I'd "do better with someone who can do video chats." I specifically requested to do sessions through messaging and NOT to do video chats because I hate them. I said something like, "oh so you're just dumping me, right?" The way she phrased things made it seem like she thought I was too crazy to be helped. She left the chat abruptly and I was left trying to get BH to give me my money back.

    I have also seen the flip side where a therapist is on Better Help and did not consent to it. Even worse, their personal phone number is on their profile and the only way to change it or take it off is to “claim” their profile. Which they don’t want to be on Better Help so many don’t want to claim it. It’s a double edge sword for therapists too

    As a psychology graduate (Idk how it works in the US, but in my country we have 5 years of training and to be approved by a board to be a licensed therapist, and some of us goes to +2 years of training in our desired field) I feel so bad for what people went through with Better Help.
    Also, I feel like it’s important to point out to people out there reading the comment section about what one girl from tik tok was saying about therapists treating the session as it was a first date. I’m assuming she is talking about the therapist asking questions about her life, maybe? If that is the case, i feel it’s important to point out that not every field has the same approach to therapy. Every school of thought has a different view on how to deal with the human suffering: it could be subconscious, for the freudian/jungian therapists, or it could be driven by conscious stimuli, for the cognitivists (that is the one that is predominant in America), as examples. Even though the crisis at hand should be dealt with, it is very important for the therapist (specialy the non cognitivist) to get to profoundly know the person to be aided, so they can understand what brought them here and what goes way past the crisis at hand, and that can take as long as 8 sessons aprox. So I wouldn’t see it as a red flag if I knew what type of education the therapist in question had, because therapy cannot be some drive thru process, and it takes years to deal with trauma that will trigger crisis, so it’s important to be open to that.
    But, with that said, of course, there is a lot of things that is plain bad about those unprofessional therapists! The mental health system in America really needs to change it’s perspective to be less oriented to profit by big corporations.

      In USA, Michigan it takes 5 - 6 years of college including an internship. Then when you finish a Master Degree you have to work for 2 years under a licensed person. After that you have to take a test to only get one designation. You have to select if you will be a clinical person or an administrative person. If you want both you have to work for 4 years post graduate and then take the test. Its no joke. If you don't pass the test in Michigan you cannot work as a therapist no matter how many years of work supervision you get. So after doing all that why would ANYONE work for pennies per minute at Better Help? You can Graduate from HS, go to vocational school to be a mechanic and charge $150 for labor to get your car repaired. Take some tests, finsish school and have a great career as a Mechanic.

      There's a difference between understanding how the humans work in terms of how they think and react and feel, and it's another thing to have sympathy for people. Too many therapist lack sympathy. I see it all the time. Same therapist will make fun of people for things out of their control, you see this on the therapist subreddit as one example.

    I signed up for better help around the time it first came out. I wanted to try it because I was so depressed that I couldn't even leave the house to see my in person therapist, and back then, she didn't offer video calls. But, better help charged me immediately instead of after the trial, and I didn't have the money. I made enough of a fuss that they gave my money back, so at least that part was resolved. But the therapist I was given (we talked over text) sounded like a bot or someone using copy paste messaging. I would have to repeat myself multiple times, and they would respond in strange ways that seemed vague and didn't make sense. The best way I can describe this "therapist's" text style is like when you use the customer service chat line on Amazon.

      The first therapist I was matched with on BetterHelp absolutely wasn't a good fit and seemed a bit unprofessional, but I quickly realised that in the very first session and it was really easy to switch to another therapist (whom I chose based on her profile). And she's been very helpful, I've been having sessions with her for months now (took a break in the middle due to life circumstances and was able to resume with the same therapist). She joins sessions on time, often goes overtime if we're in the middle of a topic, listens attentively and helps me to understand and manage my emotions, asks the right questions to get me to think more deeply about what is going on internally, doesn't offer life advice and has acknowledged that she can't tell me what's the right or wrong thing to do in a situation because I know myself and the people/factors involved best. I'm sure there are even better therapists out there and that in-person sessions could be better with the right person, but overall I've had a positive experience with BetterHelp. The cost definitely adds up though so I won't continue with it indefinitely.
      It's disappointing to hear how much BetterHelp has let people down, and I won't defend it. I can only speak to my personal experience with it.

It did take some research on my end before selecting her because I was so terrified after my disastrous initial experience with betterhelp! My first therapist didn't set any goals with me, talked over me, and straight up told me I "wasn't the brightest" in an example and several other disrespectful comments like wtf lol. I opened up to her about my grief and she told me to make a box and write notes to it. That's it. That was her advice as an "experienced grief therapist". It almost drove me away from therapy entirely, but I pushed myself to try again only because I had 2 more sessions covered by my school. I can't imagine paying for expensive ass sessions out of pocket just to be treated like this.

  • @adrienneboeing
    @adrienneboeing Před rokem +17

    Early on with my better help therapist, I was having this anxiety/ptsd crying trigger thing right before I had an appointment. I thought that would be good timing because she could help me feel better. I was crying over feeling critiqued and feeling inadequate, it used to hit so hard because I had dealt with a lot of hurtful criticism from multiple adults my whole life. I was crying over an email from someone who had unexpectedly critiqued something I worked on. He was someone I looked up to, a mentor. So of course I want his praise (I’m over it and still look up to him). So once I told my therapist what was going on (while crying), she tells me “that’s narcissistic!” Then I think she realized what she said in that moment wasn’t right because she stopped and said.. “is that okay that I said that?” I said it was okay because I was too afraid to be honest with her, I also didn’t know her well. Well duh it’s narcissistic, I’m in therapy and talking about my problems! No need to make me feel even worse for having feelings I’m trying to heal. I asked her if I’m a narcissist and she said I definitely am not one. So why even say that, especially while I’m crying already? I’m just a person trying to heal. I totally understand if she had said that or something similar in a better way after I had calmed down and could process it, just not while I’m in the middle of being triggered. It definitely damaged me for a few years because anytime I felt bad about anything, I would have this guilt and be so afraid I was being too narcissistic. So this added onto the chronic shame I was already suffering from. I’ve definitely come a long way with years of hard work. I was able to tell my therapist back home that still sees me for free what happened and she is an excellent therapist. She said that wasn’t the right thing to say. Without her I wouldn’t be as healed as I am today. I would like another therapist since I’m not able to see her when I go out of state, but I am hesitant to go back on better help after that experience. That wasn’t the only issue I had with the “better help” therapist either. She still helped me in ways and was nice, but I don’t think she is aware of certain things about herself, which is normal, she’s human. It was just hard to go from seeing a therapist who genuinely cares about me to someone who says things like that at the wrong moment. I assume many of these therapists have no idea how much damage they are adding on to all these people looking to heal.

      I'm really sorry you struggle with all these issues without help.
      If you haven't already look into topics like mindfulness and cognitive behavioural techniques online.
      These are strategies that won't solve the trauma but may help out with coping.
      If you aren't already, try living as "healthy" as possible, so fresh air, healthy food, movement (if possible), regular sleep etc and avoid substances like alcohol, caffeine, sugar and other drugs.
      Especially anxiety is heavily influenced by the above, so this might be something you can try, too.
      Maybe there are also online forums or self help groups nearby for people with similar traumatic experiences.
      Of course these things are no replacement for therapy but maybe they can help a little until then and it gets you out of the position of being unable to act.

    I always have wanted to speak to a therapist to help me through these larger issues in my life and I had finally reached out last year after a break up.
    My first session was okay although it felt like my therapist was just agreeing with everything I said and didn’t really offer me any good advice - it felt like I was speaking to a friend. Not the worst case scenario but also, I didn’t understand why I was paying a stranger to hold space for me the way any one of my close circle friends would have.
    I give a second meeting a chance because I also believed I was over thinking the whole thing. My therapist told me that I should get back together with my ex who had caused this whole episode I was experiencing, it made me feel hopeless and like I made the wrong decision by leaving. She then asked me how I like to ground myself, and I told her I like to stand bare foot in the grass, and then she said, “wow I really like that, I should try that”
    The whole thing made me feel icky, and I canceled my membership the following week.

    I am from Eastern Europe and I may have an unpopular opinion on this, but I believe you should NEVER pay for basic therapy that is not funded from your insurance if you have a officially diagnosed mental disorder and are treated by a psychiatrist.
    If you struggle with severe mental illness, therapy is essential healthcare and you should not pay for it. I understand that some forms of therapy are more expensive, but I am not talking about those types. For things like CBT or DBT, there should be state funding too for people to access. I know it may not be possible in America, but I just find it unethical to charge people who are usually the poorest because their mental health does not allow them to earn enough money to support themselves. I always went to therapy that was 100% covered by my insurance and took part in research that provided free therapy in exchange for data. I am obviously not saying that therapists shouldn´t be paid, but they should be paid by an organisation. Exception is of course when someone does not have a severe diagnosis, but just wants to work on themselves. I think that it is okay to charge for that as they will not literally die, end up homeless or commit crimes because they didn´t receive it (or at least the chance would decrease significantly especially with some illnesses).

I was deep in the trenches of having full blown anxiety attacks and they pretty much treated me like I was just trying to get access to drugs 😢

    Great breakdown! I was always wary of signing up but I ended up being in a situation where I was desperate. After a few terrible therapists that didn't want to treat me, I matched with one that amazingly is legit (I was able to confirm licensing, private practice, etc) and is the one that has been able to work with me the most effectively after 10+ years of therapy. Funny thing too is that we started discussing all these problems you mentioned during a session!

    This legit makes me want to be a therapist because goddamn, I can think of better responses than repetitive "how does that make you feel?" and creepy solicitations.

    Sometime it’s google that sells your info. If you google better heath or online therapy you starts seeing ads for online therapy so it’s not always better help.

    When I was 14/15 I had a therapist through BetterHelp and my first therapist with the program had kids screaming and crying in the background, constantly disrupting the session, she kept cursing at me and also diagnosed me (this is illegal as a therapist) and continued our sessions with instructing how to cope with the mental illness that she diagnosed me with. Which I don’t have and she completely disregarded my real diagnosis.

    So thankful that a therapist friend of mine told me NOT to go with Better Help when I really needed a therapist. This was a couple years back and the therapeutic community were already becoming well aware that there were issues with Better Help. So glad I decided not to use them.

    I've used better help for a while (off and on for about a year and a half), and had 3 therapists. The first one was wonderful and very helpful and I had her the longest. Then I stopped therapy. A few months later i wanted to start again but wanted to select a therapist who specialized in grief since my mother was dying from cancer. She was also wonderful. I talked to a 3rd therapist a few months after about a different topic not related to grief and she was also wonderful. So for me, 3/3 therapists were wonderful. Nobody was late, they all communicated well and were flexible and communicative. I am an African American woman and I specifically sought out black women therapists each time. I would definitely recommend Better Help

    There’s something very creepy about one company mass advertising for people with psychological problems. It’s like how Scientology operates.

    Can’t believe all these horror stories. I thought it was just my bad luck…first therapist I had didn’t show up for session and said we could just send voice memos (lol no thanks?) so I switched.
    The next one literally said I probably should have been diagnosed with autism within 15 mins of meeting me, during which time she let her dog out. Then when I said through tears that I would really love to focus on my extremely hard depression and insomnia she told me that my sleep issues were what was making me sad and I should find a psychiatrist for sleep meds but in the meantime can take nyquill. Wish I was kidding, felt like I was being punked 😢

    In Germany the only way you can call yourself a therapist is to study psychology for 5 years and on top go through another 3 plus years practical education in therapy. I have the feeling that „licensed therapist“ does not mean that to betterhelp.

    i’ve had a lot of these experiences with different therapists that weren’t through betterhelp and they did make me feel worse and they did put me off of seeking therapy. if there’s one good thing they did for me it was that it taught me to have more faith in my own judgement than that of a stranger’s, because nobody in their right mind tells someone stuck in DV to have another kid with their abuser so the other won’t get lonely. that’s not even to mention how useless and offensive ‘resource officers’ are that i was directed to after having to call the cops one time to stop a fight and the only ‘help’ they could offer me to get out of this mess was “nobody’s giving handouts, go get a job,” …um, i’m disabled, and even if i weren’t nobody’s paying living wages for individuals let alone single parents. it really is ‘every man for themselves’ out here. anyway thank you for putting this message out, i almost did fall for their ads out of desperation but now i’m really glad i didn’t.
