RainWatch: NZ’s 7 day rain forecast - subtropical turns subantarctic

  • We have your weekend weather and the forecast right through next week as we transition from subtropical to subantarctic airflows.
    The weekend starts off dry for most places but by Sunday a cold front moves in and then clears NZ on Monday morning.
    Next week is windier, more unsettled and colder as a messy low pressure area moves in and potentially brings some severe winter weather, mostly later in the week.
    But it’s not all bad news with the forecast for Wednesday looking excellent in many parts of NZ, including Mystery Creek in Waikato.

    ECMWF and GFS seem to be consistently forecasting lots of snow while the Australian model is forecasting lots of rain, which should we trust more?

    • @WeatherWatchTV
      @WeatherWatchTV  Před měsícem

      That's like asking who will win the rugby world cup - both are great teams and both produce excellent results. We use GFS a lot more than ECMWF, there are pros and cons with both.

    I really appreciate the service you provide, thank you. Can you recommend some weather or metereology books, pre propaganda for a novice who would like to learn more?. Thank you in advance

      A really good book from the 1990s is Eric Brenstrum's weather book. He was at MetService back in the 90s and wrote a great book explaining NZ's weather.

      Feeling warm and being warmer than average are two very different things. It can be warmer than average and still -20 degrees if you live in Antarctica, for example :)

    Love your work Philip, but what is actually "Helpful" with any map is a key and that is what is most often missing from these graphics. Without a key most of the visual information is unintelligible .

    NIWA advises only EV drivers should be permitted to travel
    anywhere over the weekend due to the current global-warming
    emergency otherwise the CO2 levels from
    the other cars will melt too many icebergs and that'll
