Two-year anniversary of Russian invasion of Ukraine | DW News

  • Ukraine is marking an anniversary of infamy. Two years since Vladimir Putin launched his war on a nation he denies even exists. A war Russians are forbidden even to call a war.
Ukraine has survived, paying a terrible human cost. Recently its forces have been on the back foot. Ceeding small amounts of territory on land -- even as it scores important successes at sea.
In 2023 the front lines remained largely in place. Ukraine's much vaunted offensive failed to repeat the successes of a year before -- where Ukraine recaptured big swathes of territory occupied by Russia. But even outgunned and outmanned, Ukraine is reasserting its hold on that territory.

The overwhelming amount of арргоving and chеегіng comments by ordinary Russians in resроnse to videos deрісting the atrосіties against civilians and prisoners of war in Ukraine were just as shocking to Ukrainians as the war itself. We had somehow grown ассustomed to the war, but the realization of who we have been neighbouring all this time without even knowing it is still horrifying.
Those tгоgІоdytes referred to themselves as our brotherly people. One can only imagine what they might do to those they consider their enemies given the орроrtunity. Don't give them that орроrtunity because it's you who they call their enemies.
Negotiating with Russia is akin to negotiating with EbоІа. Allowing Russia to remain undefeated is like undertreating a dеаdly infection - it will only return stгоnger. This is why any реасе deal that doesn't ensure a clear victory for Ukraine is just a temроrary сеаsefire.

In the past two years, the Russian-Ukrainian battlefield has transformed through four major stages and achieved a rough balance of power and a stable front.
In the first phase of 2022, Russian troops pressed into the border, carried out focused assaults, penetrated locally, and airborne at stuck points. They once tried to control Kiev and force the Kiev authorities to submit.
In the second stage, the Ukrainian army effectively counterattacked with the support of NATO, seizing Kharkov in the north and Kherson in the south. The Russian army shrunk the front line on the northern slope and held on to the separation of the two states in eastern Donbas, Wunan, Kherson and Zha. Local areas of Porizhia and the Crimean Peninsula.
Entering the third stage in the spring and summer of 2023, the Ukrainian army launched continuous counterattacks against the above-mentioned land-losing organizations. It failed to break through the Russian defense line and instead became exhausted.
In the fourth phase that began in October last year, the Russian army successfully expanded its defense zone by waiting for work to counterattack, and the Ukrainian army and the Western camp were filled with a sense of failure.

It has been two years since this terrible war began. In an inexplicable and unacceptable way, the Russian dictatorship attacked Ukraine, a sovereign country, with the aim of re-establishing an empire and threatening the peace of Europe and the world. In the last two years, the destruction caused by the Russians in Ukraine is simply indescribable: a mass of civilian buildings were destroyed, human lives were ruined, children lost their families. Not to mention the war crimes committed by Putin's mass-murdering regime, the most prominent of which is that tens of thousands of Ukrainian children were kidnapped from their parents, dragged to Russia, where they were imprisoned in re-education camps.
This war has been going on for two years now and Putin has not given up on conquering all of Ukraine and oppressing the people living there. But Ukraine is still alive, the Ukrainian nation is still alive and even in these moments they are bravely fighting against Russian aggression with superhuman unity and defending Europe, the free world and above all their own, beloved country, Ukraine.
As a Hungarian, I am fully aware of what Ukraine is going through. My country has also experienced what it is like when Russia acts as an aggressor towards us. In 1849, they were the ones who defeated the Hungarian freedom struggle against the Habsburg oppression, then in 1956, when Hungary protested against communism and the Hungarian nation demanded independence, the Soviet Union brutally overran our country, then carried out a bloody reprisal and After that, Hungary suffered from communism for more than three decades.
I fully support Ukraine from Hungary!
Together with the EU and all peace- and justice-loving countries, Hungary is on Ukraine's side and together we fight against Putin's dictatorship so that justice wins and Ukraine remains a free and independent country!

And you not only fell for it. You still repeat it. Putin does not want all of Ukraine. He wanted the warm water port in Crimea. He knew the Kerch Bridge was the weak link and he needed a land bridge across the southern end on Ukraine. So he "attacked" from the north, east and south. The convoy came in from the north but stopped and just sat there. Troops in the east advanced as if they had a mission. Ukraine scrambled to stop the "advance".
While all this was going on the troops in the south dug in and built fortifications. Once the south was ready the Russian troops in the north and east were recalled. So the convoy went back to Belarus, boarded a train and went to southern Ukraine. Troops in the east moved out towards Belgorod, hopped a train and went south as well. The lines are at stalemate with Putin having his land bridge and Ukraine unable to take it back. But Ukraine bombs the Kerch bridge proving Putler right. He needed the land bridge.

Zelensky didn't try to prevent the conflict through diplomacy because he lacks honor and integrity.
In 2014 there was a coup. Soon after, there was a massacre in Odessa (dozens of people were burned alive). Ethnic Russians living in Ukraine were treated as subhuman. Their language and culture was being oppressed. A civil war broke out due to the rise in ethnic tensions. For 8 years the Ukrainian military was indiscriminately shelling civilians living in Donbas.
If Zelensky honored the Minsk agreement and pledged neutrality, none of this would have happened. The 8 year civil war would have ended and Donbas would have remained part of Ukraine. War is the ultimate failure of diplomacy.
Zelensky admitted that Ukraine had no intention to honor the Minsk agreements.
Who didn't want peace? Who advised against the 2022 peace talks in April? Hint: someone visited Zelensky in Kiev at that time.
Russia's national security was compromised once nato began to expand eastwards. Russia clearly stated that Ukraine joining nato was a red line (November 2021) and unfortunately this concern was never taken seriously. The Russians openly stated: if nothing changes, we will be forced to act in order to defend our national security. Enhancing the national security of one country at the expense of another is unacceptable. The Russians have legitimate security concerns.
20th September, 2021. Ukraine launched military drills with US and NATO.
NATO is not a defensive alliance. Nato illegally bombed Yugoslavia (a direct violation of the U.N. Charter).
We should never forget what they did to Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq etc.
Who blew up the pipeline causing an environmental disaster?
Zelensky banned all opposition and arrested a leading priest.
Zelensky tried to invoke article 5 under false pretenses. Remember the incident in Poland.
Ethnic Russians living in Ukraine were treated as subhuman. Their language and culture was being oppressed.
Poroshenko said, “Our children will go to schools and kindergartens-theirs will hide in the basements”.
Russians will never forget the 2014 Odessa massacre. The whole world needs to know about it.
Why was Denis Kireev eliminated? He was a member of Ukraine's negotiating team during the peace negotiations. He wanted to help his country.
Ukraine has a hit list. They target artists, journalists and ordinary citizens. Hundreds of children are on this list. (13 year old Faina Savenkova was placed on this list.)
Pink Floyd's Roger Waters is on this list. Jimmy Dore (American stand-up comedian, podcaster) and Aaron Maté (Canadian writer and journalist) are on this list.
R.I.P. Gonzalo Lira. "I cannot accept the way my son has died. He was tortured, extorted, incommunicado for 8 months and 11 days and the US Embassy did nothing to help my son.
The responsibility of this tragedy is the dictator Zelensky with the concurrence of a senile American President, Joe Biden" - Lira's father
There is evidence that Ukrainian troops have been indiscriminately shelling civilians in Donbas. (they used petal mines and targeted areas where there was no military presence).
The azov troops trapped in the azovstal steelworks in Mariupol used human shields. They refused to allow civilians to leave despite of humanitarian corridors being present.
Russia held a proposed cease fire in order for the civilians to leave, but azov would not allow the civilians to leave.
Ukraine has committed many acts of terrorism (car bombs and other forms of assassination). Darya Dugina (journalist) RIP.
The first terrorist attack on the Kerch bridge killed the truck driver and the individuals in the adjacent car (innocent civilian victims).
The second terrorist attack on the Kerch bridge killed two parents and severely injured their young daughter.
I have done a lot of research and it took me a long time to write this comment. I have stated a lot of facts and I have given my honest opinion.
I have provided a brief summary of events that took place. In order to explain this whole situation in great detail, a book would need to be written.
Hopefully someone will write an UNBIASED book, stating facts and allowing the readers to form their own judgments. Everything I said can be fact checked and verified.

Bad backs, dodgy knees: old men take over the defense of Ukraine at the second anniversary. As the SMO hits its second anniversary Saturday and casualties continue to mount, Ukraine has had to mobilize increasingly older soldiers to man the trenches and fend off intensifying Russian assaults all along the country’s sprawling frontline. A foreign instructor with extensive combat experience, who asked to remain anonymous, told The Daily Beast that the newer recruits were clearly of a different vintage. “The soldiers that I’m training now are significantly older, many come from hard labor, they have back problems, knee problems, some are career alcoholics,” he said. Storming a muddy or frozen trench isn’t as easy for a 50-year-old man as it is for a younger soldier.”
Late last year, an officer of the 28th Mechanized Brigade we had met in a cafe in Kramatorsk, in the Donetsk region, confirmed to the Daily Beast that conscripts now accounted for “up to 90%” of some units’ personnel: “Many of the soldiers under contract are either dead or injured, so we have to mobilize to replenish our ranks,” he said.
While there are no official statistics available on the average age of soldiers currently serving in the Ukrainian army, government officials have ventured out estimates: in an interview with “The New Voice of Ukraine,” Serhii Rakhmanin, a member of the Ukrainian parliamentary committee on national security, defense and intelligence claimed that the average age of a Ukrainian soldier was now between 40 and 45 years old. “This applies not only to territorial defense brigades, but also, for example, to linear mechanized brigades and even units that should have been better prepared,” he added. “Such as, for example, mountain assault or amphibious assault [brigades].” A few weeks prior, adviser to the head of the President's Office Serhii Leshchenko had made the startling claim on Ukrainian television that the average age in some companies was “around 54 years.”

@@ballenboy The irretrievable losses of the Ukrainian army exceeded the number of the active military personnel. This was confirmed by the independent research group War Tears, which shared the new data on the Ukrainian losses, based on the special math model. According to the report released on February 22, 2024, the Armed Forces of Ukraine lost 377,324 servicemen killed. For the first time, the number of killed servicemen exceeded the number of active fighters of the AFU, which is currently 366,625 servicemen.
The analysis also revealed that the average monthly losses of Ukraine amount to about 16 thousand dead. As reported by various other sources, the number of irretrievable wounded losses is comparable to or exceeds the number of dead. Thus, the total number of irretrievable Ukrainian losses may be estimated at about 32 thousand people per month.
War Tears concluded that “even if Kiev manages to solve all the problems it faced with during the training of military personnel, then 500 thousand soldiers mobilized will be enough for about 16 months of hostilities, that is, until the summer of 2025.
Steven Myers, an Air Force veteran who served on the State Department's Advisory Committee on International Economic Policy under two secretaries of state, warns that Ukraine’s military capability has been reduced to "tactical pinpricks" with little strategic relevance. Ukraine's weary military remains starved for weapons and ammunition. "It is an unqualified geopolitical catastrophe for the West. Ukraine has been destroyed as a viable nation," Myers told USA TODAY. "Depopulated, with hundreds of thousands of its precious youth dead and crippled, its industrial and agricultural foundations obliterated."
The dying will continue until the West stops sending money to Ukraine. Russia will never be defeated on the battlefield, will never concede Crimea and will never allow Ukraine to join NATO.

@@beverlyhills7883 What allies in Afghanistan? Did you see them fight back against the Taliban after the US left? Neither did I. They had 20 years to build a modern country. They choose the 5th Century.

Russia doesn't get to invade countries just because a country decides to join NATO or the EU. That is what Ukrainian soldiers are explaining to Russia right now.

“I will give you very unusual examples. There is a combat encounter on the battlefield. Here is a specific example: Ukrainian soldiers got encircled [this is an example from Real Life), our soldiers were shouting to them: “There is no chance! Surrender yourselves! Come out and you will be alive!” Suddenly, the Ukrainian soldiers were screaming from there in Russian, perfect Russian, saying: “Russians do not surrender!” And all of them perished. They [the Encircled Ukrainian soldiers] still identify themselves as Russian.” - Vladimir Putin
