Clara Lieu was an Adjunct Professor at the Rhode Island School of Design from 2007-2020. Her artwork has been exhibited at the International Print Center NY, the Currier Museum, Childs Gallery, the Davis Museum, and more. Lieu received an artist fellowship from the MA Cultural Council, has written for the NY Times, and lectured at Brown University, the NAEA conference, and in Vancouver & China. She has been profiled in Artsy, Hyperallergic, KPCC, & WBUR.

If a portfolio has an animation in it (for me personally I want to major in animation) would that be allowed? Like if I have one and rest of the pieces be other things like experimental, mixed media stuff, would that be okay? Also if it is allowed is there a time limit?
That's fine to include animation! Most schools do not have a time limit, but I think 1 minute or less is best, assume that an admissions office won't have time to watch say, a 10 minute animation piece from beginning to end.

Is that portfolio should be strong related to the major you want to study, or just feel free put put anything in it? For example, should i put a lot of design projects in portfolio if i want to apply for Industrial design?
It depends on the school's requirements, but the majority of art schools in the US are not looking for a student to apply with pieces that are specific to the major they will want to study. For example, if you want to study apparel design, you should not have a portfolio of 20 apparel pieces. Variety in media and subject matter are much more important. Thank you so much for response, so for RISD, if I try to add some industrial design projects, what kind of level will be expected? Should I take extra industrial design classes for portfolio, or you might encourage me to explore by myself?
I think ID projects would be incredibly difficult to learn on your own, if it's truly a priority for you, I would look into taking a summer course or an adult continuing education course.
