Since the Allman Bros. Band was not really considered southern rock, I will agree. The Allman's were like a southern blues/rock jam band ... even some country and jazz mixed in.

@@greglarry11 I think Skynyrd had some of that true & I still consider them Southern Rock, some consider ZZ top & Tom Petty as southern rock.
Man, Bob Burns was so cool, & prob get a lot of flack but think he was better drummer than Artimus.
Not many visuals of them doing Don't ask me no questions, for some reason didn't do great on the charts.
So thankful to all the people who find this stuff & post.
I wonder how many people who saw them in the early days really appreciated that they were witnessing greatness.
Just a few yrs younger than Gary & all I heard was the radio hits.
My daddy was a trucker like Lacy & unfortunantly there was not money for stuff like that. I did eventually get to hear more of their music & just loved them & still do but recently have gotten back into watchin or reading anything I can find on them. I feel like I am 18 again, it has been so much fun but hard at same time, learning much more abt Bob, Steve & Ed, knew more abt the other guys. RIP Skynrd family

His song writing and guitar playing on the first 3 albums really contributed to the defining sound of this band. He really made it better than it had to be. It was over for me when Ed left I lost interest. Gimme Back My Bullets lacked the magic he brought to their sound and as talented as Steve Gaines was he really took their sound in a different direction and they really didn't sound like Lynyrd Skynyrd to ME anymore. I know exactly where I was and where I was going when I heard the news on the radio of the crash. I got out it was a full bright orange moon , I was alone and prayed for their safety since we had not learned what happened yet. Went to buy street survivors the next day. My life changed that day.

Yes sir Gary is the Guitar God in my opinion. I know Allen Collins was a fast and amazing player, But when it comes down to the signature skynyrd sound its cause of the one and only Gary Rossington and his Holy Grail 59' Gibson Les Paul Sunburst, The Legendary "Bernice ".. Had the amazing opportunity to meet with Gary and his wife Dale while in Atlanta and spent almost 4 hours with them and it's been almost 3 years ago now and I try to relive that day every day lol its almost it's hard to describe in just one word what meeting your Guitar Hero and the biggest reason for your picking up a guitar in person and having a few hour one on one with the man himself. Nostalgic? Euphoric?lol kinda a ton of feelings really. Cause when you think about everything this man has been through from nothing to a superstar worldwide and in a plane crash and fast forwarding 40 years later theres no telling what life is like for him. He is a very very honest and beyond humble generis man as far as I'm concerned. Just sitting for long periods of time you can tell his body still hurts him every second of his day but he never complains or changes his way of speaking. And never has forgotten where he came from and how life is. He pays homage to his freebird brothers that helped launch his amazing career and never leaves them out of a conversation. It's just still mind blowing to me how such a famous well known and rich man is just as normal as myself and still takes time from his own family and spends time with his fans. THANK YOU!!!! Gary Rossington for everything you've contributed in your life to rock and roll and to the Lynyrd Skynyrd band and all of Skynyrd nation fans. You sir are a living legend and you and your music will live for all eternity.
